Bearing Fruitby Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister

Join us for Summer SundaySchool for AdultsSunday mornings at 10

in the Chapel Sunday, July 11A special presentation by theyouth who attended theInter-national Affairs Seminar. Theywill be teaching us about humantra cking and fair trade buyingoptions for the local consumer.

I love fruit. Itsthat wonder-ful time of year

    when we can

get some of thebest fruits and vegetables freshfrom the garden.Reminds me of my youth, grow-

ing up in Oregon where we would routinelypick peaches, cherries, strawberries, blackber-ries, blueberries and a host of other fruit toadd zest to our diets.

It also reminds me of last Saturday when our church celebrated Freedom Fest. Isay celebrated, but what really happened

was that the church ministered to the com-munity. Literally dozens of our church familyspent the day feeding and reaching out to thecity of Edmond. Whether it was Mark Nash, cooking 900 hot dogs (isnt that some sort of record?), Tana Stufflebean in charge of thehot dog distribution all day, or Duke Douthittand Randy Thomas cutting up watermelon, sharing the fruits of their labor with some

hot and tired people.Bearing fruit. Thats what scripture

calls it when we do Gods work. Makinga difference in the lives of others is how

we bear fruit as Christians. Paul wrote tothe Colossian church, Just as the gospelis bearing fruit and growing in the whole

world, so it has been bearing fruit amongyourselves from the day you heard it.

And thats just what our church isdoing. Bearing fruit. Reaching out to ourcommunity. I read an article the other daythat asked churcheswould your commu-nity notice if you didnt exist? They told of a church closing in Vermont. The farmersin the community were sad that it closedbecause they missed the chimes that rangout during the day.

I know that Edmond would miss ourchimes if our church were to close. Butthat would be the least of what they wouldmiss. The many ways that we reach outinto our community life, witnessing to thepower of Jesus Christ in our lives, makes adifference. Bearing fruit and adding zest toEdmond. Nice work, FCC!

On July 14th FCC will be hosting a packing party for Operation Christmas Child. Everyone is invited. We willmeet in Fellowship Hall from 9am-noon. You can come and go anytime.

The Operation Christmas Child project sends shoeboxes, filled with gifts, to children in orphanages, churches, schools, or hospitals around the world. We havent packed any boxes yet this year, so we need yourhelp. Please bring a few small items like soap, toothbrushes, hard candy, childrens T-shirts, or caps, balls, dolls, matchbox cars, flashlights, or almost any item small enough to fit in a shoebox. Wrapping paper andtape are always welcomed.

A booklet in the childs own language titled The Greatest Gift, accompanies each box. This booklettells of Jesus love and sacrifice for each of them. The children share the Good News with extended families.Samaritans Purse has reported a 40% decision rate from the shoebox gifts.

If you can help or would like more information as to how your children can fill a box for a needy child, please contact Michele Schlough at 844-3214.
