The Central ChallengeThe Central Challenge• Intent of the Challenge:
Design and build a structure made of only natural wood and glue and test its strength by placing weight upon it at the Tournament.
Design a Golf Ball Delivery Device delivering up to 24 golf balls (tournament provided) to be held by structure during testing.
Scoring based on the ratio of the weight of the Structure to the “total weight held”.
“Total weight held” = actual weight held + a bonus for each Golf Ball delivered and held.

Non-acceptable substances include cork, man-made substances that simulate wood (e.g., particle board or OSB), commercial laminates, materials made from wood (e.g., paper), or tree like substances (e.g. bamboo).
Glue: any commercially available adhesive material capable of creating a permanent bond ((incl. 2-part incl. 2-part epoxy, Gorilla Glue, super glue, wood glue, hot epoxy, Gorilla Glue, super glue, wood glue, hot glue and glues using an accelerant).glue and glues using an accelerant).
Teams may use more than one type of Glue and/or more than one species of natural wood.
Teams may glue together multiple pieces of wood to form laminations in the structure. No commercially produced laminates may be used.

Design a structure that holds weight. Teams are encouraged to build and test
structures prior to the tournament date.Cannot use any technology that designs,

The Central ChallengeThe Central Challenge• Weight Held Measurement:
Once 8-minute presentation time begins, the team may place structure on tester base and over safety pole and start weight placement at any time.
Total Weight Held: sum of weights successfully placed and a 50# bonus for each Golf Ball delivered and held.
Weight Placement Appraiser will note weight the structure and number of Golf Balls held.
Weight Held Ratio = Total Weight Held (in Pounds) ÷ the Structure’s weight (in grams, to the nearest 0.1)

Golf Ball Delivery DeviceGolf Ball Delivery Device• The device will be used to deposit golf
balls into the Structure without team members crossing a Safety line.
• The device may be simple or complex.
• The team must not use any type of technology to design, create, or aid in testing the device.
• The team may earn up to 40 pts for the design and creativity of the device.

Golf Ball DeliveryGolf Ball Delivery• After the pressure board has been placed,
teams may elect to attempt to deliver a golf ball to earn a bonus, using the device.
• One safety shield (tournament selected) will remain off during the entire presentation.
• All team members must remain behind the safety line during delivery attempts (lines serve as vertical planes, so no body part of any team member can cross the lines during attempts).

Colorado Extreme Creativity Slide 22
Golf Ball DeliveryGolf Ball Delivery• Only one delivery attempt (whether
successful or not) is allowed per weight placed on the structure.
• An attempt is successful if the golf ball is released from the device, enters the structure and is held for at least 4 sec.
• The device may only be used to place a golf ball into structure – it may not reposition or remove golf balls.

The Central ChallengeThe Central Challenge• To Qualify For Scoring:
Structure must meet Physical Specifications
If not brought into compliance, Weight Held = 0
Teams not making a “good faith” effort to present a Qualifying Structure for testing may present at tournament but will not advance to next level.
Points for: Official Weight Held Ratio Structure’s creativity and quality of design Creativity and design of the Golf Ball Delivery
Device. To be scored by appraiser team as part of performance, rather than at check in.

Golf Ball DeliveryGolf Ball Delivery• A new golf ball from a tournament-supplied
bucket must be used for each delivery attempt.
• Teams may reposition the bucket during their 8 minute presentation time.
• The device may touch the structure and/or structure tester during delivery.
• The device must be removed and placed entirely behind the safety line during weight placement.
• A team may elect to not make a delivery attempt between weight placements.

Colorado Extreme Creativity Slide 25
Golf Ball DeliveryGolf Ball Delivery• Weight placement is suspended during
delivery attempts.
• Golf balls may touch the safety pole, tester base, pressure board or any part of the structure.
• The tournament-supplied golf balls may only be used for placement into the structure.
• After each attempt (successful or not), no additional attempt may be made until a new weight is placed on the structure.
H

T!
Colorado Extreme Creativity Slide 26
Golf Ball ScoringGolf Ball Scoring• All golf balls successfully placed within the
structure, e.g., held at least 4 secs., will be scored.
• The number of golf balls scored at the end of time must be less than or equal to the number of weights (including the Pressure Board) on the tester.
• The bonus for each scored golf ball = 50#.
• The total bonus is added to the official weight held to derive the total weight held used in calculating the team’s ratio.

1 Structure's Official Weight Held: Up to 140 A.6.f
In each competitive Level, the Structure with the highest Weight
