The season of Lent is a time of penitence, discipline,

and renewal. In the Ash Wednesday service we are

reminded of our mortality, we confess our sins, and

we experience forgiveness through Christ’s death and

resurrection.

The “imposition of ashes” is a key part of the service.

You are invited to come forward to receive the ashes

on your forehead. In Scripture, ashes serve both as a

symbol of mortality and as a sign of mourning and

repentance.

But neither sin nor death has the final word. We will

LIBRARY

The Riverhaven Years

by BJ Hoff

A trilogy and available in Chalmers’ Library:

1. Rachel’s Secret

2. Where Grace Abides

3. River of Mercy

I will give a general overview of these books, but first let me say that I really enjoyed and recommend

reading the whole series. For a non-Amish person, it can be very hard to

understand why they abide by such rules and strict

guidelines on behavior, but you have to admire them that they actually do it! Inside the three books is a

lovely story told about family, love and belonging. Of course, there is a bit of mystery surrounding one

family and that adds some spice to the otherwise

gentle people. Definitely thought provoking books! Christine Hunter, Librarian

PWS&D Sunday Inspired by God’s promise of abundant life, PWS&D

envisions a sustainable, compassionate and just

world. On February 7—PWS&D Sunday—we reflect

on the work our church is doing to help vulnerable

people across the globe improve their quality of life

and create positive, lasting change in their

communities. Programs in international development

and emergency relief are helping women, men and

children rise above poverty and disaster and access

basic necessities like nutritious food, clean water,

adequate health care, quality education and basic

human rights. Through support of individuals and

congregations and in collaboration with global

partners, we respond together to make the vision of

abundant life a reality.

PWS&D responds to needs around the world
