significant exposure to our members and the community at large.

VOICE OF BUSINESS

As a non-governmental institution, the Chamber has no direct role in the writing and passage of

laws and regulations that affect businesses. The Harford County Chamber of Commerce,

however, works very hard to lobby in an attempt to get laws passed that are favorable to

businesses or stop laws that are unfavorable. The Chamber hosts a very active Legislative

Committee comprised of members from a diverse group of businesses. This committee acts as

the eyes and ears of the organization, keeping everyone up to date with what is happening in the

County and State during the Legislative Session in Annapolis and year round on local

government issues.

PARTNERSHIPS

We have a tremendous working relationship with a multitude of organizations throughout the

county. With like-minded goals and a unified voice, we can achieve a much higher degree of

success to better the Harford County community.

NETWORKINGDO’s & DON’Tsof Professional Networking

30SECONDS

TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESSIf you only have 30 seconds,

what do you say?

DO’s

Put Your Best Foot Forward Don’t be afraid to say hello to people around you.

The chances are they are just as nervous as you.

“Elevator Pitch” Be quick, concise and accurate when describing your business.

Ensure you engage your listener from the get-go and make it memorable.

Business Cards Make sure you have more than enough! A great tip is to jot on the back

of your card the time and place you met, so your new business contact remembers.

Follow Up What’s the use of meeting people if you don’t follow up afterwards?

Listen and Learn This is a valuable lesson in life and not just business. Take time to

learn from others’ experiences.

Quid-pro-quo You cannot expect to get something without offering anything in return.

Offer free help, favors, advice or reduced cost services.

Patience Is A Virtue Networking is developing strong, long-standing business

relationships. Don’t expect to reap the rewards immediately. Good things come to those

who wait.

Prepare Questions Anticipate the kind of people you are likely to meet and think

about what you would like to ask them, what you would like to learn from them.

DON’Ts

Don’t Be Timid and only talk to people you already know. Networking

isn’t just for the flamboyant big-shots or charismatic colleagues.

Don’t Only Speak to One Person The more the better.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions Everyone is scared of appearing

ignorant or stupid but there’s no need. The vast majority of people

will relish the opportunity to peacock their knowledge and

expertise, so make sure you ask as many questions as you can.

Avoid Overzealous Self-promotion this tactic is more likely to

annoy than build valuable relationships

Don’t Forget to Follow Up this is so important, we’re

saying it twice.

1. Determine the single most important

message you want to communicate. What do you

want people to remember?

2. Create a powerful image of your firm in the mind of

your listener. Speak using pictures and images. People

respond to visuals and remember them.

3. Make it believable. Your 30 seconds should come from a

smart truth about your company.

4. Keep it simple and concise. Don’t confuse. Say it without

technical jargon.

5. Be entertaining. Evoke emotion. You don’t have to tell jokes but

show a sense of humor when appropriate.

6. Be passionate. Get excited. People will share your enthusiasm.

7. Make the firm the hero. Focus on the company, its product and its

single most important message. If you want to be remembered, make

it memorable.

You have 30 seconds. Go.
