Our Localynx ad has done extremely well! We were intrigued by the app because we are big believers in supporting local. The cost made it a no brainer to at least try. What a great investment! Our ad has brought in a lot of new younger customers to both locations! The

thing we are most excited about is that this app will really make a difference in our community by driving dollars to locally owned businesses over national chains. We highly

recommend partnering with LocaLynx for both your business and your community! ~ Mryon Coblenz, Owner, Athen’s Greek Restaurant

“The first and most important choice

a leader makes is the choice to

serve.” – Robert Greenleaf

At the November Leadership Ashland

class, our focus was service and Board Development. The

participants continued working on getting to know each other by

creating “team resumes” based on their strengths and examining

what their team would look like with strengths “overdone.” They

also began exploring the concept of Servant Leadership.

According to Robert Greenleaf, who coined the phrase “Servant

Leadership,” the “Best Test for Servant Leadership” is: Do those

served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become

healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely

themselves to be servants?” Each person we encounter, we work

with, we have lunch with, we serve on a committee with, should

come away a better person as a result of their time with us. We

are responsible for helping others become as good as they can

be. The participants discussed their own experiences with

leaders who they felt made them better and these were the

themes that emerged about why:

Qualities & Characteristics of Servant Leaders

We Have Experienced

Inclusion – Leader included us in the information gathering which made us feel that we had value in the decision-making process

Leader was consistent and reliable, which helped to build trust

Leader was caring Leader sometimes delegated but also was willing to take action and help when needed

Coaching and mentoring by leader helped to create credibility and create a path for me in my career

Leader was an active listener, which made me feel valued

Leader was able to manage chaos – which made me feel safe Leader did a good job of setting a good example in balancing personal vs. business

Led by example – let go of ego – this helped to build trust and achieve better results

Leader empowered us

Leader was willing to share why a decision was made It’s important to recognize leaders who DON’T exhibit qualities of servant leadership

The class heard

first-hand from

servant leaders in

the Ashland

community through

a panel discussion of

“Why I Serve.” Guest

speakers included:

Kaitlyn Edwards

(LA 2017), Scott Fickes

(LA 2017) and Cameron Peden (LA 2016).

The speakers shared why they have chosen to serve on

boards in the community and the importance of giving

back through service. In the afternoon, the class

focused on Board Development with a presentation on

Board Governance by David Ross of the Mental Health

and Recovery Board of Ashland County; participated in

a mock board meeting led by Dr. Dan Lawson; and then

had the opportunity to meet with representatives from

a variety of non-profit and service organizations from

the community. Organizations that were represented

included:

Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce

Appleseed Community Mental Health Center

United Way

Ashland Humane Society

Ashland Main Street

Ashland County Convention and Visitors Bureau

Ashland Rotary Club

Ashland Balloonfest

Ashland Public Library

Ashland Noon Lions

Ashland Care Center
