CHAIR MESSAGE - Richard Brink

Well as we enter March it seems like we are

still picking up from our New Years Eve party! Time is flying but the party that we

CHAMBER NEWS

This was the 8th year of our Dancing with the Chamber

Stars and it never ceases to amaze me that after each

event the committee discusses whether to change the

dancing theme of the Dinner Dance. We always have a

list of members that want to dance next year. We

change the theme and decorations as we did this year as

we celebrate Lisle Then and Now, the 60th Anniversary

of Lisle’s incorporation. The 1956 theme; which

included a 1950’s police car as you entered the

Allgauer’s entrance to the Hilton Lisle/Naperville with 50’s music playing. Some of our committee dressed for the theme and the Hilton

staff were also dressed in 1950’s style. There are many pictures

included in this newsletter and many more on our website and an album

of pictures on Facebook. This is the Lisle Area Chamber’s premier

event of the year and it did not disappoint. We thank our dancers, our

sponsors, our committee, our members, the Hilton for another outstanding event. Paula Gleason is the committee chair and has been

for many years and without her vision this event would not succeed.

She is precise on every little detail and it shows in the ballroom and the

atrium. Claudine Rummer the Chamber Administrative Assistant did

an outstanding job and it was her first time helping organize the event.

The Multi-Chamber Economic luncheon with 12 other Chambers was

held on February 25, 2016 with speaker William Strauss of the Federal

Reserve Bank. The Lt. Governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti stopped in to give

us a brief State of the State. For more details please refer to article on

page 4 in this newsletter.

Spring is in the air and it is time for us to think ahead and prepare to

give out ten $500.00 scholarships at our May 19th luncheon. The

deadline for the scholarship application is April 8, 2016. Our

committee will meet shortly after that to select the students that will receive the scholarships. For more details please go to our website

www.lislechamber.com.

Daylight-saving time is right around the corner. It will be time to set

the clocks forward one hour — or spring forward — on Sunday,

March 13, at 2 a.m.

U.S. Economy in Seventh-Inning Stretch

By: John Quigley, Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce

While America’s economy, or Gross Domestic Product (GDP), grew at only 1.8% in 2015—well

below the historical average of 3%—some 2.7 million new jobs were created, the nation’s unemploy-

ment rate dropped to its historical norm of 4.9% (6% in Illinois), the trade-weighted United States dollar increased by 19.4% over the past 18 months, and energy prices for oil and natural gas dropped

well below their norms.

Those were among the financial statistics that Keynote Speaker William A. Strauss, Senior Economist and Economic Advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank

of Chicago, shared with some 280 businesspeople representing Lisle and 12 other west suburban chambers of commerce at the 14th Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon held at Ashyana Banquets in

Downers Grove on February 24. Strauss reported that it typically takes the U.S. a decade to recover from a major financial crisis

such as the “Great Recession,” which ran from December of 2007 through June of 2009. “To use a baseball expression,” stated Strauss, who was presenting for the ninth year in a row, “I’d

say that were entering the seventh or eighth inning.” Since the “Great Recession” ended, America’s economy has rebounded slower than desired, but is

still doing better than the rest of the world, further strengthening the U.S. dollar.

While a strong dollar is beneficial for both Americans travelling abroad and foreign imports coming to the U.S., it also creates a burden on consumers abroad wanting to purchase exported Ameri-

can products and generated a trade balance surge resulting in .6% drop in the GDP. The Fed forecasts GDP growth at 2.3% to 2.5% in 2016, 2.0% to 2.3% in 2017 and 1.8% to 2.2%

in 2018, compared to Blue Chip’s forecasts of 2.4% in 2016 and 2.3% in 2017. In the past six and a half years, annual growth has averaged only 2.1%, compared to 4.7% and

4.3% following the recessions of 1981-82 and 1974-75, respectively. After losing 8.7 million jobs from December of 2007 through February of 2010, America’s work-

force has added more than 14 million new jobs, including 2015’s growth rate of 2%, more than double

the historical rate 0.8% to 0.9%. While the U.S. unemployment rate, which peaked at 10.2% in October of 2009, has fallen to 4.9%,

Illinois’ rate ticked up to 6 % in 2015 and out state population continues to decline. Since peaking in 2000, the labor force dropped by another 3% to its lowest level since 1977, with

declining participating percentagewise by those age 16 to 54. Of those age 55 and older, 63.9% are

still working. Of those 65 and older, 18.8% are still employed. “The labor market is not healthy yet, but we’re getting there,” stated Strauss. “If you invite me

back to speak again next year, I would expect to have good news for you on this.”

Strauss predicted “disastrous results” if minimum wage increases are adopted nationwide. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), interest rates and rate of inflation all are expected to remain be-

low historical norms at around 2%. The Fed lending rate, which increased only .25% in 2015, will

remain below historical norms of 3.5% to 4% even if increased slightly in 2016. Manufacturing has recaptured 93.8% of its production loss, averaging 3.4% growth annually, but

only 39.4% of its jobs loss due to increased worker productivity and technology gains. In Illinois,

manufacturing employment dropped by 2.4% in 2015. Housing starts totaled 1.1 million in 2015 and are projected at 1.25 million in 2016 and 1.368 mil-

lion in 2017, which are all still below the historical norms of 1.4 to 1.5 million.

Businesses and consumers have benefitted from the decline in oil and natural gas costs.
