October is HCE Month and I’m certainly looking forward to it and hope you are too. Don’t forget it’s also Make a Difference Month, but you’ve always been very generous and don’t expect that to change. By the time this come out we will already have gone to Green Mill Play and a great time and good food. Now we look forward to the Membership Event and the counting of our Passport Project points. Recently Vicki Siebenhaar and I went to Vermillion County HCE Chuck Wagon Feast at Kickapoo Park and made some new friends and got some great ideas. They invited us to go back anytime. I hope to see many people at our October activities. I hope everyone had a great summer, I know I did with lots of travel. With all the natural disasters we’ve had in the last few weeks, please remember all the people responding and helping to restore normal back to all these communities. Let’s find some ways to thank our own local first responders and volunteers. Judy French

Filipino life is very different depending on where you live.  If you lived in a small barrio (village), you might fetch water in buckets, clean the house, ride the carabao (water buffalo) home, or run errands.  Some young children help their families by selling small items.  But in a wealthier home, you would do pretty much the same things you do in other developed countries, such as watch television, play on the computer, and get together with friends. Usually, kids wear shorts (or skirts for girls) and a T-shirt, but they get dressed up for special occasions. Parents expect their children to come to dinner on time, wash their hands before they eat, and eat all the food on their plates, Nearly all Filipino children begin school at age six or seven.  After six years of elementary school, most of the children continue to four years of high school.  High school includes one year of military training, Graduation is at age 16 or 17. Classes tend to be very large.  There might be 40 to 60 in a class.  In some rural areas, especially in the mountains, children have to walk several miles just to get to class, and they even have to bring their own stools to sit on since schools do not have enough money.  But education is still

Jean's Craft Club: Recently, I, Mary Lou attended a Craft camp in Atlanta, Illinois. Learned several new crafts, but the best part was when several attendees started talking about Jean Swain’s contribution. It was wonderful to hear all the great things she did. She is certainly missed. November 3rd around 10:15 am, will be our last craft of the year. It’s a canvas board painted with chalk paint. Then your job is to decorate it with ribbon around. Charge is $3. The other craft if you wish to participate will be a silver tree to decorate and use at the Holiday Tree Event. Connections Café will also be there to check your blood pressure, play games with you and visit. We had a great time the last time they attended if you remember. There will be refreshments. EARLY RISERS UNIT The Early Risers met at Denny's with 9 members present.  Ronda Scott led us in the Pledge and the Homemaker's Aim.

Nancy Sides presented the interesting lesson on Rain Gardens.     We celebrated two birthdays--Mary Lou Younger and Nancy Sides.  Linda and Dick Cummins invited us to their joint birthday celebration to be held at the Thomasboro Village Hall Saturday afternoon, Oct. 7. The memorial service for Anne Brenner will be Saturday, Sept. 30, 2:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Urbana.     Special Activities chair Mary Lou Younger reported on two possible future activities we might enjoy.  Parkland College is presenting the play "Much Ado About Nothing" in November, and a possible trip to the Tea Room in Mackinaw, IL in December. She also reported the events planned by HCE for October-- the play in Arcola, the membership event, game day, and the Cultural Arts event.  Dates and times are in the Chatter.     Elections will be in October and dues are now being accepted for next year.  Our next meeting will be at Denny's Oct. 19.   Elaine Hershbarger, secretary

MAHOMET UNIT The Mahomet Unit met on September 20. It was a potluck which is held each fall. It was for guests also and a nice group came and enjoyed the good time. The meeting started after the potluck. Elizabeth Michael opened with the Pledge to the Flag and Aim. Roll call was answered by your favorite flower or garden tip. The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer report was read and approved. A nominating committee was appointed – Joyce H., Richey V. And Bonnie C. Members discussed about a book for Geraldine Hickle who passed assay this past year. Elizabeth reminded all to read the Chatter each month and keep up with our hours. Chairman reports were given. Kay Elmer gave the lesson “Rain Gardens” a lesson probably a lot of people didn’t know about. She explained where you could see some around close and could be made. All was educational and interesting.Refreshment served by Joyce Herriott & Elizabeth Michael.

PENFIELD UNIT Penfield HCE started a new season of monthly meetings on Monday, September 18 at Jane Piatt's home.  Six members attended. The meeting was begun as the usual with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and reciting the Homemakers Aim. Upcoming events were discussed.  Election of new officers and payment of annual dues will take place at the next meeting, and Pennies for Friendship will be collected then.  The treasurers report was given and minutes of the last meeting approved.          Because of schedule conflicts, both the October and November meetings will be held on the fourth Monday instead of

the third Monday.  Rosetta Suits will be hostess of the October meeting.  The annual fall auction of fall produce, decorations, and miscellaneous will be held there and the Christmas tree will be decorated for the HCE County Holiday Tree/Wreath Craft sale that same evening.          Our June meeting was held as a carry in picnic at the Penfield Forrest Preserve.  It is remembered for the heavy wind that blew plates, food, and table cloths everywhere. Memories of chasing paper plates from the grass and bushes still brought laughs.

The lesson on Food Trends was given by Roxie Sage, followed by lots of great conversation and delicious refreshments. Roxie Sage - [email protected]

MAYVIEW UNIT The September 5, 2017 H.C.E. Meeting was held at Helen Walden's home with Velma Olson assisting her, due to the illness of Marilyn Innes.  They served Curtis Orchard Donuts, bing cherries, cheese, chex mix, ice tea and cider.  Carol led us in the Pledge and the H.C.E. Aim, and Pat led us singing "God Bless America".  Pam Franzen gave the Lesson on "Rain Gardens", about the rain that hits our roofs and can be caught by rain barrels or directed in the yard to a low spot.  She gave us 2 very informative handouts that we could read, and she explained very well how to grow different heights of flowers, so you could have pretty flowers all summer. She said it may take 3 years to get it looking like you want it to.  Thank you Pam. What's your best Gardening Tip? was the question for answering roll call.  We had 16 members and 4 guests, Beverly Lee, Judy Hughes, Joan McDaniels, and Cathy Phuney, so glad to have them join us, also Mary Helen Moser-Jedlick is an "at large" member, which makes 5 guests.  Gerry Ann read the minutes, and they were approved.  Judy Heck collected for the dues.   Linda Flessner explained about the house we are giving to the residents there, like celebrate each one's birthday, give small gift certificates for one to buy something with, or something else appropriate for them.  Nancy Mathis made a motion we pay Linda Flessner for the things she needs to buy as the months go by, Helen Walden 2nd the motion and voted and it passed.  Velma Olson made a motion that we make a donation for "Make a Difference Day", to our group home also, Helen Walden 2nd that motion, and we voted and it passed. Pat Smith's granddaughter Claire Smith won Champaign County Fair Queen in July for this year's fair, she is a lovely young woman, just graduated St. Joseph-Ogden High School in 2017.  Velma reported that Marvin Lee had a blood clot and needed surgery, very serious, but his band will still play in Philp Park 2 more weeks.  We have election of officers next month, and Oct.11 is Membership Event at FBA., Oct. 18 is Game Day at the FBA., and Oct. 26 is the Cultural Arts Show at the FBA.  Our next meeting is at Pam Franzen's home Oct. 3, at 1:00 p.m. Meeting adjourned.Gerry Ann Windler, SecretaryP.S. Her son and Daughter-in-law asked if I would take care of all of the scrap books that she had assembled for our unit in past years. If you remember, each unit used to make a scrapbook for the year and they were displayed at one of the meetings. (Probably the annual meeting.) I have ten of these which have pictures and newspaper articles which are full of history. I don’t know what to do with them. Do any of the other units have any and if so, what have you done with them. We don’t have a library or such that would or could keep them for us. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what to do with them. I hope we can keep them rather than throwing them away. Janis presented the lesson, “Rain Gardens”. She gave us a hand-
