Singapore at 50

Singapore, a longtime British colony, became part of Malaysia in 1963, declared independence on Aug 9, 1965. The founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, led the country since independence and is known to have contributed immensely in turning Singapore into one of the world's richest countries.

Since last year, as part of their preparation for their 50th year of Independence, Singapore started to reflect on their journey and took pride in how far they have become as a country. In the beginning of 2015, Singapore started celebrating on different parts of the country. On April, the Youth celebrated by showcasing their talents, June was the SEA Games, and recently, last August 9, the National Day Parade.

The overall theme for SG50 is for all Singaporeans to celebrate as one people. The SG50 logo celebrates the Singaporean spirit ? signifying that their dreams are not limited by the physical size of the island nation. Singapore is celebrating their shared values, affirming their aspirations and committing to a brighter future.

On the eve of the National Day Parade, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew's son, said: "At 50 years, as we stand at a high base camp, we look back and marvel how far we have come. We are grateful to those who made it happen. From this base camp, we can also look forward to new peaks ahead. The journey ahead is uncharted. But we must press on, because we aspire to do better for ourselves and our children."

The values and discipline made Singapore one of the most developed economies in the world, and is expected to continue its success for another 50 years.

The Founding Father

Driven, persistent, with a solid dedication and passion, a man of foresight with a fighting spirit, the one who believes in every person?s capability to contribute to the growth of the society.

For three decades, during his governance, goods jobs were created, education system was intensified, and infrastructures were heightened; a vibrant economy emerged. He led Singapore from 1965 until his death on March 2015. Through his efforts and great leadership, Lee Kuan Yew has transformed Singapore from a Third World to a First World Country.

His death was mourned not only by Singaporeans, but by people who believes in his principles and teachings, from different nations. Along with grief, his passing inspired many to hope, dream and to have a good heart for others.

Lee Kuan Yew is a gift not only to Singapore but to all nations around the world.

Esco is a microcosm of Singapore. Our story is affirmed each day by many individuals born of cultural and ethnic diversity. Despite our differences, our values make us one, working together for one goal, being the Tiger in our industry. Like Singapore, many did not believe at the beginning, but with our good leaders and their teachings, Esco is now one of the leading laboratory equipment manufacturers in the world and is continuously blossoming throughout the years. Esco will forever be humble and a proud Singaporean company that will be here to celebrate the Centennial of Singapore.

Turning cancer back into healthy tissueBBC News, Aug 25, 2015

Scientists believe they may have found a way to turn cancerous cells back into healthy tissue.

Their lab-based work suggests there is a biological step that can restore normality and stop cells replicating out of control.

When the US researchers added molecules called microRNAs, it put the brakes on cancer, Nature Cell Biology reports.

Although the early tests in a dish look promising, it is unclear whether it will help treat people with cancer.

The Mayo Clinic researchers are hopeful that the new mechanism they have found could apply to all types of cancer. Cancer cells

have signalling roles.

The Mayo Clinic work shows adhesion molecules connect cells and signal via miRNAs to control cell growth.

If this becomes deregulated it can drive cancer.

But replenishing cells with miRNAs can remedy this.

Lead researcher Dr Panos Anastasiadis said: "By administering the affected miRNAs in cancer cells to restore their normal levels, we should be able to re-establish the brakes and restore normal cell function.

"Initial experiments in some aggressive types of cancer are indeed very promising."

Henry Scowcroft, Cancer Research UK's senior science information manager, said: "This important study solves a long-standing biological mystery, but we mustn't get ahead of ourselves.

"There's a long way to go before we know whether these findings, in cells grown in a laboratory, will help treat people with

Esco products boosting cancer research in Czech Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences is one of the biggest research center in the Czech Republic covering the areas of biochemistry, genetics and physiology of microorganisms, molecular biology and molecular microbiology, microbial products and their formation, biodegradation activities of microorganisms and symbiotic relations in biological models, and new biotechnological processes. It includes also laboratories dedicated to investigate the various aspects of immunology (from its evolution to the functions of its various components) in relation to infection, inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer.

The Laboratory of Immunotherapy is in the main research premises in Prague where we concentrate a lot of our efforts within the academic market sector. Thus we are in repeated contact with the head of the laboratory Dr. Luca Vannucci, M.D., PhD. and we are thankful for his friendly attitude to us. His laboratory is devoted to the study of early immunological response against cancer, nanomedicine and, generally, modulation of innate immunity responses in pathological conditions. The goal of their studies is to understand reciprocal interactions between immunological and cancer mechanisms to develop more

effective immunotherapies and they are successfully developing that research area because of their valued experiences.

Since 2012, they are using a biosafety cabinet, Class II Labculture® Low Noise, and a CelCulture® CO2 incubator. They use these instruments for cultivation and manipulation of animal and human cell lines originated from normal or cancer tissues. They are satisfied with the quality and reliability of the instruments. There was no service needed. They are not experiencing contamination in the incubator that shows an extraordinary cleanness in the chamber, thanks to the ULPA filter, all other protection features (line-in filters, intelligent heating preventing condensations, built-in decontamination system, etc.) and the ISOCIDE? coating that both instruments have. The instruments are placed in a very small room so the low noise level of the cabinet is an excellent feature helping people to work in comfort and thus, safely as well.

All about StandardsInternational Standards for Biological Safety Cabinets

The need for standards for Biological Safety Cabinets

Biological safety cabinets, also known as microbiological safety cabinets, have been widely recognized as primary containment devices in dealing with biohazards. In general, these biosafety cabinets are used to provide personnel, environment and product protection. The terms should only be applied to those devices that meet the requirements based on their construction, airflow velocities and patterns, and their exhaust systems.

The evolution of these containment devices prompted the need for consistency in its construction and performance. Moreover, the cabinet industry continues to grow so it is imperative to develop uniformity of these products throughout the world. As a result, various not-for-profit organizations created standards for biological safety cabinets.

The standards for biological safety cabinets are used to set the minimum requirements for manufacturers to comply with in terms of the products? construction and performance criteria. In general, the major international standards in use today put emphasis on the biosafety cabinet?s performance in terms of providing protection to the worker and environment, and product if applicable.

12 | Laboratory Esco News

EN 12469

EN 12469 is the harmonized European standard for microbiological safety cabinets, replacing the former German DIN 12950, British BS5726 and French NF X44-291:1984 standards in 2000. Similar to the NSF/ANSI 49, it specifies the requirements for both the cabinet?s construction and performance criteria. Though EN 12469 standard is based from NSF/ANSI 49, there are several differences between the two.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL)

UL is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization and is one of the most recognized conformity assessment providers in the world. In order for a biosafety cabinet to be certified by NSF, it should conform to UL Standard 61010A-1 which covers electrical equipment for laboratory use.

JIS K3800

JIS K3800 is also known as the Japan Industrial Standard. The certification is performed by Japan Air Cleaning Association (JACA). This standard specifies performance, structure, and material and test method of Class II biological safety cabinets. The Class II biological safety cabinets specified in this standard are Type A, Type B1, Type B2 and Type B3. The cabinets should satisfy the requirements established by Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare based on the Ministerial Ordinance No. 99 of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1998.

AS 2252

AS 2252, also known as the Australian standard, was prepared by the Australian members of the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee ME-060. It supersedes AS/NZS 2647:2000. This standard specifies requirements for biological safety cabinets including installation and use. For Class I biological safety cabinet, emphasis is given to personnel and environment protection. For Class II biological safety cabinet, its design should provide personnel, environment and product protection.

SFDA YY 0569

SFDA YY 0569 or the State Food and Drug Administration YY 0569 is the Chinese Standard for biological safety cabinets. It is modeled on both the EN 12469:2000 and NSF49:2002. This standard adopted the KI-Discus test from the European standard. Even though YY 0569 is based on the two major international standards, there are some notable improvements, i.e. instant display for air exchange rate and air intake, audio and visual warning system, to alert workers of performance malfunction. Similar to NSF, it recognizes four types of Class II BSCs. In summary, there are aspects unique to NSF and EN standards that are used as basis for YY 0569.

International Standards for Biological Safety Cabinets

The following are the major international standards for Biological Safety Cabinets:

NSF/ ANSI 49

The NSF International Biological Safety Cabinetry Program was initiated during the 1970s. This standard gained official recognition from American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 2002. It specifies the requirements for both the biosafety cabinet construction and performance criteria. In addition, reliable operation, durability, cleanability, noise level, and illumination control, vibration control, and electrical safety of the cabinet are checked as well.

Comparison of NSF/ANSI 49 and EN 12469

There are several differences between NSF/ANSI 49 and EN 12469. However, despite the below-mentioned differences, both are the two major international standards in use today. Predominantly, Europeans use EN certified cabinets while Americans use NSF certified cabinets.

Laboratory | 13

Categories NSF EN

Application The standard only applies to Class II biological safety cabinets.

The standard is relevant to Class I, II and III biological safety cabinets.

Subcategories of Class II BSCs

The standard defines Class II subtypes, i.e. A1, A2, B1, and B2.

The standard defines only a general Class II cabinet; EN cabinet is nearly equivalent of the NSF Class II Type A2 BSC.

Microbiological Challenge Testing for operator protection

The standard uses microbiological challenge test to assess operator, product and cross-contamination protection.

- Adopted by EN for both testing and acceptance - Recognizes KI-Discus test ~ the only way to validate the containment of the cabinet.

Downflow Velocity No requirement; yet NSF requires a larger test sample size and requires traceable test equipment for more verifiable testing results ~ more reliable, precise and accurate.

Required; yet does not specify the test instrument accuracy and type.

Inflow velocity Very specific inflow requirements ~ distinguishes subcategories of Class II BSC; uses a Direct Inflow Measurement as the primary standard ~ provides repeatable and accurate inflow measurements.

Inflow test is conducted by measuring the airflow above the exhaust HEPA filter and back calculating the inflow ~ allows for calculation error, multiple sets of data provide different velocity values.

For A2, 0.5m/s 0.4m/s

Performance envelope* NSF requires that Class II cabinets must function +/- 0.025 m/s of the inflow and downflow setpoints.

None, requires the cabinet airflows to be within the generic velocity ranges.

Secondary tests for worker comfort: noise, light, vibration

Noise Distance used is just an approximate operator head position (12 inches in front of the cabinet and 15 inches above the plane of the work surface at the vertical centerline of the cabinet).

Distance is 1 meter from the center of the work opening.

Maximum limit for Noise Level 67 dBA 65 dBA

Light level 650 lux 750 lux; EN standard is not completely precise about background lighting levels, accuracy of the measurement instrument, and test point grid.

Filter leak test Uses a generated aerosol challenge Allows alternative test using natural aerosol challenge test.

Pressurizing Testing Every unit manufactured should undergo ?soap bubble pressure leak test? ~ verifies that the cabinet is airtight.

EN requires a ?type-test? performed by an independent laboratory.

Other miscellaneous tests Requires chemical and abrasion resistance of the cabinet external paintwork and motor/ blower performance test.

Not required

Construction - Detailed construction requirements. - Does not allow noise insulation materials inside the contaminated areas in the cabinet - Emphasis on cleanability of contaminated surfaces

Requires airflow alarm system

As part of Esco promise, biological safety seminars are conducted through the efforts of our colleagues all over the world. This aims to promote biosafety awareness, which will in turn reduce or better yet eliminate the risks of contaminating the environment with biological hazards and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Esco China held a series of seminars with the same goal. Seminars were held in Institute of Microbiology in Chinese Academy of Sciences, China National Research Institute of Food & Fermentation Industries, Nankai University, Mars China, Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences of CAAS, Rongchang Pharma, and Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

We hope that we have imparted the true essence of biosafety, and may those guide each of us as we fulfill our obligation to our environment and to the society.

Biological safety seminars held in China

Bangladesh?s medical laboratories and hospitals have been urged to focus on bio-safety, given the emergence of new diseases.

?If Bangladesh is safe, then the world is safe as well,? Petrus Paolo Carbonell, President of the Esco Biosafety Institute, Singapore, said at a seminar on Wednesday.

Carbonell was delivering the keynote paper at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka.

Its new ?biomedical engineering? department has organised the seminar to make students aware of the critical need of bio-safety, particularly in laboratories and hospitals.

Maj Gen Dr HR Harun, consultant surgeon general of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, said bio-safety was not a new issue, but ?we are looking at it from a different point of view?.

Here are some excerpts from bdnews24.com, the Bangladesh?s First Internet Newspaper;

?When they are in the ICU, they are 20 percent more likely to get hospital-acquired infections,? he said. ?This can prolong hospital stay by 2.5 times.?

Health Secretary Syed Monjurul Islam, the seminar?s chief guest, said that it was ?critical? to maintain bio-safety because of the emergence of new diseases.

?We must all be partners in this effort,? Esco Institute?s President said, stressing that one institute or country cannot fight off the challenges alone in the current age of globalisation when diseases are spreading faster than before.

Maj Gen Md Siddiqur Rahman Sarker, commandant of the MIST, was present, among others, at the seminar.
