Monday is Labor Day already, the unofficial end of Summer. Labor Day also means that the Becket Parish Picnic is right around the corner - next Sunday, September 9th to be exact. I hope most of you can attend for at least a little while. We need times like these to enjoy each other's company and bond as the people of Becket. Times of fellowship are important in the life of a parish, so I look forward to our picnic this year and future opportunities to get together and become better acquainted with one another. Our faith is all about relationship. There will be something for everyone at the Picnic - fantastic food from around the world, petting zoo, photo booth, kids activities, Canton Public Safety Displays, inflatables, yard games, bingo and music - just to name a few highlights..... The picnic begins after the Noon Invite and Ignite Mass (the first one of the season) and runs to 4 PM. We are still in need of some volunteers. If you can assist - visit our homepage and click on the 'parish picnic' box and complete the sign-up process. There are myriad of volunteer opportunities to fit each skill and interest. Also, we are taking donations of 8 oz. bottles of water and individual bags of snacks (chips, pretzels, etc.). These donations can be dropped off anytime from September 4th - 8th in the Conference Room. Have a great week - especially our kids as they begin a new school year! Christ's Peace! Fr. K of C Annual

Golf Outing Wrap Up Our 15th Annual Charity Golf Outing on August 18th at Fellows Creek Golf Club in Canton was another big success with lots of golfing fun for all participants! This year we set another record in terms of number of golfers and money raised for our parish St. Vincent DePaul organization! Congrats to our winning team this year, Team Yancey - Bob Yancey, Bob Cieslak, Fr. Terry Treppa and George Peters. Their score of 21 under par was a new record low score for our outing as well. They played very well, but you gotta love those “strings” and “mulligans” we sell for charity, also! Winning our Straightest Drive competition was Shane Aigner. Fr. Terry Treppa won one of our Closet to the Pin competitions. David Trost won the other. Jeff Campeau was the big money winner in our 50/50 drawing and he donated his winnings back to further add to our donation to St. Vincent DePaul. Thanks for your generosity, Jeff! Every golfer took home a door prize. Unfortunately, nobody won the $5000 Hole-in-One contest or the other three "bonus" Hole-in-One contests we had. Maybe one of our golfers will be luckier next year!! I would like to specifically thank all those very generous people or businesses who donated awards and door prizes: Fellows Creek Golf Club, Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center (home of the Golden Fox and Fox Classic golf courses), Brea Burn Golf Course, Jim & Livvie Lutfy and The Fine Wine Source Inc., Bob Yancey and ServiceChex, Inc., Edward C Levy Co., Bright View Landscaping, Mickey's Golf Range, Canton Family Chiropractic (Larry Morabito), Broad Family Chiroprac-tic, Rob Bovitz and Bovitz CPA, Mike & Sue Neiheisel, Mike Goodhart,

(continued….)

David Trost, Ed & Mary Ann Harkins, Dave Denhard, Rick St. Peter, Jim Roach, John Spencer, Jerry Kerpet, George Peters, Robert Craighead, Ed Patrick, Mike Mackley, Jim Allen, Vince Ventura and Duke Hynek. Without their generosity, our outing would not have been the success it was! Finally, thanks again to all our golfers who participated this year and in doing so supported our SVDP folks! Hope to see you all back next August when we will tee it up again for charity! Ed Harkins, PGK Charity Golf Outing Chairman Msgr. Kern Council #8284

St. Lorenzo Ruiz Feast Day,

Friday, Sept. 28, 2018 The Filipino Community has scheduled September 28, 2018 as the day to celebrate St. Lorenzo Ruiz feast day. It was approved by Fr. Chris, spiritual adviser of the St. Lorenzo Filipino Group. It will start with a Bilingual Mass (English with Tagalog hymns) at 6:30 PM followed by a cultural program and dinner in the Family Life Center. This is the fourth year that St. Lorenzo Ruiz’ feast day is being celebrated here at St. Thomas a’Becket Church. St. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint, beatified and canonized by Pope John Paul II. In 1637, St. Lorenzo Ruiz on a missionary expedition headed by Fray Domingo Ibanez, went to Japan where he was tortured to death because he refused to renounce his Faith. He is considered the patron saint of migrant Filipinos. A meeting is scheduled every Friday after mass for the month of September. Filipinos from other parishes are invited to join the celebration. Since some members cannot attend the meetings on Fridays because of job constraints, announcements and updates are posted in our FaceBook page entitled “St. Lorenzo Ruiz Filipino Group via St Thomas a’Becket.” Different committees are already formed, namely; Food, Souvenir Journal, Invitation, Stage and Decoration, Fundraising, Cultural Program, Bilingual Mass, Set up and Clean up. All Filipino children are invited to participate in the procession and rose offering before the start of the mass. They will also sing the “Ama Namin” (The Lord’s Prayer) with action.

Choir Season Resumes Thursday, September 13th

at 7:30 PM We take the joy of singing seriously. Very seriously. After all, we’re facilitating the worship of our Creator—the God who gifted us with the profound beauty of music. We’re the Liturgical Choir at St. Thomas a’Becket and we’re looking for new singers and instrumentalists who enjoy the opportunity to sing and play beautiful, vibrant music. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM. There are many wonderful musical opportuni-ties that await us this year, including the Rainbow Youth Conference Mass at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, our first international pilgrimage to Ireland, and the St. Cecilia Sing choir festival at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. If you love singing at mass and you know that God has planted the gift of music within you, then now is the perfect time to let your talents grow and be nurtured within a supportive, musical family. We are blessed to have an incredibly diverse, talented, and thriving music ministry at St. Thomas a’Becket. Come and help us make seriously great music. Kevin Ryan Director of Music & Liturgy [email protected]

Bell Choir Seeks New Director

The Handbell Choir at St. Thomas a’Becket is seeking a new music director. We are looking for an experienced musician, music teacher, and/or bell ringer who would be interested in leading this music group. The bells rehearse once a week from September through Easter

and join the music ministry in providing beautiful liturgical music at one mass a month. This is both a wonderful opportunity to make music with a fun, dedicated group of parishioners and to become more involved in the liturgy as a minister of music. If you or someone you know may be interested in serving in this capacity, please contact our parish music director, Kevin Ryan, at: [email protected].

Men’s Faith Fellowship

Welcome Back Evening

Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 PM

As Christian men, engaging in a fellowship with other Christian men provides for an opportunity to discuss how we can become better fathers, husbands, friends, and enhance our relationship with God. A Sunday mass alone is simply not enough to nurture this relationship. The purpose of the small, men’s faith fellowship groups is to expand spiritual growth beyond Sunday mass. Five groups of over fifty men have been meeting on a regular basis for nearly three years and discussing issues that challenge them in their work, family and spiritual lives. Father Chris will be hosting a welcome back evening for current members of the Men’s Faith Fellowship and any other men of the parish who wish to simply learn more about the Fellowship and interact with other men. This evening event will be held at St. Thomas a’Becket on Tuesday, September 11, 7:30-9:00 PM, in Rooms 10-14 of the church. Please come see what it’s all about!

Page 4 St. Thomas a’Becket Chancellor

This weekend we welcome the following children into the Catholic Christian community:

SABRINA MAI’LANI-MARIE STANLEY, daughter of Ethan Stanley and Chantaniea Brittany-Brianna Cuff. Godparents are Curtis Stanley and Samantha Stanley. JAIYDEN LEWIS-LAMAR HARRIS, son of Chantaniea Brittany-Brianna Cuff. Godparents are Elijah Stanley and Chaurice Cuff. We pray for the parents and godparents, and for all who will be there to nurture their faith as they grow. Help them to realize that they belong to the Lord, and teach them what it means.

NEWSLETTER

Being judgmental is a common human fault. We have probably all been guilty of it at some point. We wonder, “Why don’t those people get a job - or clean up their house and yard, or stop wasting their money on junk food, beer and cigarettes? How did they let themselves get into this mess?” These are questions that can arise when coming into contact with a poor person - whether it be a homeless person we see sleeping on a park bench, or one we visit who has called our St. Vincent de Paul Conference for help. It’s hard not to pass judgment. It’s human nature to think we would never let ourselves get into such a situation. In reality, the poor probably never thought they would end up in the position they are in either. They once had aspirations of a good life, stability, health, and living the American dream, but then reality stepped in. Perhaps they grew up in poverty with no good example to show them how to do differently. Perhaps depression or physical illness has stopped them in their tracks, paralyzing them from helping themselves. Perhaps a cut in hours or job loss has wiped out any chance for solvency. Perhaps alcohol or a cigarette are the only way to forget for a time. None of us can really know how the poor got where they are unless, as it is said, we can walk for a time in their shoes. As Vincentians we are called not to judge, not to wonder why, but to be ready to pay forward what has been placed in our hands by our faithful donors. That is our calling - to alleviate the suffering of the poor, not to judge them. We trust that God will guide us, bless our efforts, and fill us with love and compassion for those we serve.

St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us, our benefactors and those we serve.

Please remember we can only take NON-PERISHABLE food
