Invisible Cities Italo Calvino

In the center of Fedora, that gray stone metropolis, stands a metal building with a crystal globe in every room. Looking into each globe, you see a blue city, the model of a dierent Fedora.

ese are the forms the city could have taken if, for one reason or another, it had not become what we see today.

「Core」

Dur ing the change of each c i t y, br i l l iant architecture fades with time, gradually corrupted, and forgotten. With the forming of creative atmosphere or artistic thoughts, however, it can become the cultural heritage of the city.

JUT Foundation for Arts and Architecture started the "UrbanCore Arts Block" project since 2010. Free empty houses are provided by parent company JUT Land Development Group. Before September 2011, art associations and creation groups will be invited to the land and exert their creation laboratory freely. This laboratory of originality allows artists to ferment their ideas and establish an artistic interactive plat form for national and international societies, and further elicits conversation with the public in the communities in order to practice art and culture locally.

Origin and Objectives

"UrbanCore Arts Block" is a complete area among Zhonghua Rd. and Yanping South Rd. The spot used to be included in the old "city center" of Taipei, thus the name "UrbanCore." "Core" also means the core of fruit, referring the old city center to an eaten and corrupted fruit core. History has been forgotten, but we hope this plan can nurture the land with art and culture, bringing the core to and come into life again.

This plan can be re-activated on the other base, moving around the corners of great Taipei area and stimulating more spectacular creation and energy with dierent culture and history of each location. It is hoped that the freedom and uniqueness of creation can be passed down in this way.

Opened in February 2010, Taipei Contemporary Art Center (TCAC) is an independent initiative founded by a group of artists, curators, scholars and cultural activists. TCAC is a platform for the art community to express itself, to interact among themselves and to exchange with international art worlds; a discursive space where the art community can discuss, research and address their concerns on socio-political issues, cultural policies and aesthetic positions - ultimately becoming a shared channel where critical opinions on social and cultural changes are voiced.

During its two-year pilot phase, TCAC is housed in a 4-story building in the Taipei Ximen area. Major activities include the presentation of art works, films, books, music, and performances, as well as lectures, forums, symposiums, publications and exhibitions. Besides programs planned and produced by our operation team, we are also open to external initiatives. At TCAC, we welcome and encourage emerging artists and professionals to create and present their own discursive and artistic programs.

The Ruin Academy is an experimental platform for knowledge building on the way towards the Third Generation City – the ruin of the industrial city. The Academy oers a public sphere for cross-disciplinary communication within the general ¢eld of built human environment, city. We don t focus in the dierent disciplines of art and science. We focus on local knowledge, people and stories. The Academy is more like a Pub than a University – or like a public sauna in Finland, where everybody is stripped naked from the President to the Police.

The Ruin Academy is an independent and free platform where the different student groups and other players can meet. The Academy is about knowledge building. It is a simultaneous construction site and a ruin. We don t know what we will find but the first step is to break the box, ruin the city. Riverbed Theatre was founded in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan. The company s image-based, Total Theatre productions blur the boundaries between visual and performing arts. Critics have praised the organic, sculptural quality of Riverbed s “subconscious" theatre, likening the performances to the best works of Samuel Beckett and David Lynch. Riverbed has participated in festivals and events including: Robert Wilson s 2009 Watermill Center Inferno Bene¢t (New York), 2007 and 2008 Avignon-Off Festival (Avignon), 2006 Alice Festival (Tokyo), 2006 M1 Fringe Festival (Singapore), 2004 New Ideas Theatre Festival (Taipei), 2004 Alice Festival (Osaka, Tokyo), 2003 World Art Collective Festival (Macau), and the 2001 Taiwanese Experimental Theatre Festival (Boston).

After concluding the "Stalker Theatre Group" in 2004 proceeding a decade of formation, Hung Hung restarted in the year 2009 with the "Dark Eyes Lab". Using theater as the core, the objective is to attempt in various genre-crossing acts to expand into a new performance style. At one hand, the group takes on challenging important international theatrical works, and on the other hand, focus is also placed on training new creative talents in Taiwan. With Hung Hung's extensive experiences in cross-over artistic endeavors and in conjunction with the scripts published in "O the Roll, Poetry+", attempts are made in producing and promoting mid-size and grand-scale theatrical works.
