The countryside in Kerala is changing rapidly, mostly due to changes on farms.
GeographyNational 5
Change One: New Technology
[i] In Kerala, there is now better irrigation of crops.

New dams
Canals and pipes lead the water to the fields
GeographyNational 5
Instead of channels dug from rivers, there are now concrete dams across rivers with pipes and canals. This give a more reliable all-year water supply and allows crops to be
grown all year round. However, they are expensive and the reservoirs drown farmland.

[ii] In Kerala, more agro-chemicals are used.
Artificial fertilisers help to grow crops better, giving higher yields and more food. In addition, chemicals prevent pests and diseases killing crops which again leads to more food.

[iii] In Kerala, more advanced equipment is now being used.
For example, biogas plants convert animal and human sewage into gas which is used for heating and lighting homes. These are quite simple and cheap to build.

Greenhouse farming is also more popular, allowing farmers to harvest crops when the price is highest.
