In lieu of testing you over chapter 1, I thought it might be interesting and a MUCH better judge of your comprehension to have you do a project instead. I LOVE creativity, so hopefully some of yours will come out. You can get BONUS POINTS for what you choose! In lieu of testing you over chapter 1, I thought it might be interesting and a MUCH better judge of your comprehension to have you do a project instead. I LOVE creativity, so hopefully some of yours will come out. You can get BONUS POINTS for what you choose!

Throughout the following slides, you will find the rules for completing your Dichotomous Key for Chapter 1.

You may work on this project ON YOUR OWN or with ONE partner. CONSIDER, though, that the points taken from you will DOUBLE if you have a partner. For example, two heads ARE better than one, so if you would normally receive just 4 of 5 for missing an item, you go down to a 3 if you are paired. Choose wisely! This will be the ONLY day I give you in class to complete this project, so be EFFICIENT!! The COMPLETED assignment will be due ELECTRONICALLY to me on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6 BY 5 PM!!! (This is for ALL classes!!!)

DO NOT make Sgt Major Brown or CERTAINLY not Mr. Curls have to ask you to be quiet while working in the media center! 6th period—you have been THOROUGHLY warned, but EVERYONE needs to be aware that POINTS WILL BE LOST if I receive ANY negative feedback on your behavior!!! I trust you to be diligent.

(You have 15 categories total, so you will choose 15 pictures total.)

• Once you decide on what pictures you want to represent each category, organize them in some manner either in a PowerPoint presentation, or within a word document. • You should NOT place one organism per slide…they should be grouped where I can see all of them at one time. • NUMBER or alphabetize EACH picture!!! This will help when composing your key!!

• You can then start constructing your dichotomous key. I STRONGLY recommend using the Martian Road Sign and Shark keys to guide you. These are found within prior posts.

• REMEMBER the rules I told you for making keys! Look at your 5 fish from the Shark Key!

• When choosing what characteristics to differentiate organisms, you MUST use facts from your text, not “has blue tail.”

• When choosing characteristics, you must ALSO include at least THREE characteristics of LIVING THINGS! For example, with movement, you could differentiate organisms b/c they “move by using feathered wings.” (But now you can’t use that one!!! ) This is actually VERY easy and extremely helpful in separating out some organisms/groups early in your key!
