CHAPTER 1INTRODUCTION

STUDY BACKGROUND

The field of microscopy has undergone an enormous evolution since the earliest opticalmicroscopes were developed in the 1600s. The optical microscope has been refinedcontinuously since its introduction, resulting in today’s superb scientific instruments. However, the optical microscope is ultimately limited in the minimum size and nature ofthe features that it can resolve by manufacturability constraints and, ultimately, thephysics of light itself.

New microscopy technologies have been developed to overcome these limitations, such aselectron, scanning probe and focused ion beam microscopy. The field of microscopycontinues to evolve rapidly as new requirements and imaging technologies aredeveloped. While optical microscopes once accounted for the bulk of all microscopes soldaround the world today, they are in the minority today.

While microscopes today are a multi-billion-dollar industry, their true importance lies inthe activities they make possible, such as life sciences research, microelectronics andadvanced-materials science. Microscopy is particularly important to the expanding field ofnanotechnology.

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

This report is an updated version of an earlier BCC study published in 2011. The goal ofthis study is to provide the reader with an understanding of recent developments inmicroscopy technologies and applications and their impact on the future size and structureof the market for various types of microscopes and microscope accessories. Specific studyobjectives include identifying segments of the microscopy market with the greatestcommercial potential in the near- to mid-term (2013 to 2018), identifying and, wherepossible, quantifying the key demand drivers, projecting future demand for different typesof microscopes, and evaluating the technical and other challenges that must be overcomefor the market to realize its full potential.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The report is intended especially for manufacturers and vendors of microscopes andrelated accessories. Other readers who should find it particularly useful includeentrepreneurs, investors, venture capitalists and other readers with a need to know wherethe microscopy market is headed over the next five years.

The global market for microscopes and accessories was worth about $3.8 billion in 2012. After weathering the recent global economic dislocations, the microscopy market enjoysfavorable near- to mid-term prospects. Sales are projected to exceed $4.0 billion in 2013and approach $5.4 billion by 2018, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% between2013 and 2018.

The fastest-growing segment of the market is scanning probe microscopes, with a CAGR of10% between 2013 and 2018. Charged particle microscopes have a projected CAGR of6.8%, and optical microscopes 4.7%.

As a result, charged particle microscopes are projected to increase their market sharefrom 41.7% in 2012 to 43.4% in 2018. Optical microscopes are projected to lose marketshare, from 39.1% in 2012 to 36.6% in 2018, while scanning probe microscopes’ share isprojected to grow from 5.9% to 7.1%.

In 2012, the life sciences were the dominant end-user market for microscopes, with 31%of the total market, followed by materials science (26%), semiconductor manufacturing(24%), education (12%) and nanotechnology (7%). Between 2012 and 2018,semiconductor manufacturing’s share of the market is projected to slip from 24% to 19%. Meanwhile, materials science, education and nanotechnology should gain market share,while life sciences’ share remains constant.

The United States accounted for the largest share of the overall global microscope marketin 2012 with nearly one-third of the market for all types of microscopes. Japan had thesecond-largest market share, with 20% of the global market, followed by other Asiancountries with 19% and the EU with 18%.

Japan and other Asian markets are expected to experience the most rapid growth over thenext five years, with CAGRs of 7.0% and 7.4%, respectively, between 2013 and 2018. TheU.S. and the EU are expected to lag behind with average annual growth rates of 5.2% and6%, respectively.
