The New Jim Crow Notes Chapter 1: The Rebirth of Caste-Stating to free slaves but little actually happens to make that true-Chose African Americans because they were relatively powerless and in great supply unlike the Indians who could fight back and the Europeans whom there weren't enough of-Bacon's rebellion against the planter elite class for oppression of the poor-The planters then decided to use African slaves since they were less likely to know English and form alliances with poor whites-Gave poor whites more priveleges than the black slaves, driving a wedge between the two races-Democracy essentially built from racism (3/5's rule)-Race rose from slavery as an attempt to justify slaving other people-Vagrancy laws made it a criminal offense to not have a job and also legal for county prisoners to be sold to plantation owners to do work for little to no pay and were aimed at the blacks to reestablish slavery in a different form-Reconstruction Era attempted to mitigate the effects of the racism in the South by providing public education to poor blacks and whites and giving aid to the blacks-Civil rights for blacks existed on paper but were not present in real life. Too many holes in amendments left space for states to make their own laws to discriminate against blacks w/ poll taxes, literacy tests, etc.-Racial segregation evolved into racial caste system AKA Jim Crow-Slaves of the state-Racism like Jim Crow and slavery seemed "natural"-Once communism posed a threat to America, laws against blacks were lifted in an attempt to what they believed what to prevent blacks from becoming communist since communism boasted equality-Brown vs. Board of Education essentially would have ended legal discrimination in the states, except after Brown had passed, Jim Crow laws were still legal and there was a new wave of racism-Big switch from 1964-1969 when civil rights revolution was going on-Young white men from baby boomer generation were also a cause of crime, but media perceived crime to arise from the unemployed blacks-More money goes into arresting people, less money goes to treating drug abuse so more people keep going to jailQUESTIONS/NOTES:-If there were african americans in legislative positions, why are no mentions of attempts to overrule these vagrancy laws?-NOTE: recent laws have passed that gave cheaper crack cocaine (blacks) the same punishment as powder cocaine (whites)-Racial bribes drove a wedge between poor whites and slaves
