Implementation of Cluster Development Programmes:
FDDI is implementing the ‘Support to Artisan
Programme’ in the clusters at Jaipur, Alwar, Jodhpur
& Punjab under the Eleventh Five Year Plan. The
360˚ interventions are being done in the areas of
trust building, SHG formation, establishment of
Centralized Resource Centers (CRC’s), process,
product and design development, advertisement
&brand promotion and development of market
linkages.
The major focus of the intervention is to synergise
and build awareness among the artisans for their
socio-economic upliftment, introduction of new
low cost technology, development of tools, raw
material up gradation, building a diverse product
range based on market feedback, development of
market linkages etc. Interventions are done through
various skill development & skill diversification
workshops at regular intervals.
The Placement Linked Skill Development Programme (PLSDP)
The Placement Linked Skill Development Programme (PLSDP) under the Eleventh Five Year Plan has been efficiently implemented by FDDI in association with Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). FDDI has implemented the PLSDP through establishment of training centers at Kanpur, Agra and at the FDDI sub-centers at Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai in addition to various on-site locations across the country. At these locations, unemployed youth from the economically weaker section of the society are selected, trained and provided assistance to get employment in the footwear industry.
FDDI has completed the training target of 12960 and the placement of approximately 83% of the successful trainees against a target of 75 % set by the Government of India.
Establishment of FDDI’s Operators Training Center at Rae Bareli- Sultanpur Road under the PLSDP programme:
An Operators Training Center has been established by Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) on the Rae Bareli-Sultanpur Road which has commenced its first training programme from November 3, 2011. The Operators Training Center has been established under the Placement Linked Skill Development Programme (PLSDP) scheme of Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Government of India to address the problem of lack of trained manpower faced by the Indian leather and leather products industry. The Center at present is offering the basic operators course in cutting and closing to unemployed youth. There was an overwhelming response from Rae Bareli and nearby towns which is evident from the
221
CHAPTER-10 Institutional Trade Facilitation
fact that as against the capacity of 180 trainees per month at the Center, four thousand applications were received within one week.
The first batch, which consists of 400 rural youth
from Rae Bareli-Sultanpur region reflects the fact
that the students are in dire need for training to
become self reliant and increase their income
after successfully completing their training at the
Operators Training Center. FDDI’s efforts in creating
a trained work force through short and intensive
training programmes has been a great success and
applauded at various fora as an innovative and
effective approach.
International Assignments:
The leading international institutions/organizations
like ARS Sutoria (Milan, Italy), PFI (Germany),
LDT- Nagold (Germany), SATRA (UK), University
of Applied Sciences (Pirmasens, Germany), Gabor
(Germany) etc. have linked up with FDDI and many
more are to join hands for mutual cooperation
and support. Delegations from France, Indonesia,
Germany, Botswana, Ethiopia and Nike-Indonesia
have visited FDDI in the year 2010-11.
FDDI services are highly sought after in Asian
& African countries. It has undertaken the
Technological Upgradation and Global
Benchmarking project of leading footwear
industries in Ethiopia after establishing an
international consultancy wing in FDDI. On
successful completion of the project, the institute
bagged a prestigious project of institutional
capacity building and bringing in international
academic standards in Ethiopia. FDDI is supporting
the Leather Sector of Ethiopia in its Growth &
Transformation Plan (GTP) for upgrading the
Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) of
Ethiopia. Discussions for a similar intervention for
the Leather Sector Institute in Botswana are in final
stages.
Testing and other support services:
The International Testing Center (ITC) at FDDI
has been upgraded and is presently the only
Testing centre in the country having ISO 17025
certification from DAR, Germany and prestigious
quality certifications such as - ISO 9001 & ISO
14000. ITC Noida has been confirmed as a “RITES
APPROVED LABORATORY” by RITES Ltd., and has
got accreditation from NISSAN (RENAULT) Germany
for testing automobile plastic components. ITC is
