SIX THINKING HATS

INTRODUCTI

ONThe de Bono Hats system ,also known as "Six Hats" or

"Six Thinking Hats" is a thinking tool for group discussionand individual thinking. Combined with the idea of

parallel thinking which provides a means for groups to

think together more effectively, and a means to plan

thinking processes in a detailed and cohesive way.

The six hats represents six modes of

thinking and are directions to thinkrather than labels for thinking . Themain purpose of using six hats is to :

1)Encourage parallel thinking

2)Encourage full spectrumthinking

3)Separate ego from performance.

WHITE HATWhite hat is a hat of fact and information.

With this thinking hat, you focus on the data available.Look at the information you have, and see what you canlearn from it. Look for gaps in your knowledge, andeither try to fill them or take account of them. This iswhere you analyze past trends, and try to extrapolatefrom historical data

EXAMPLEStudents are talking while the teacher is talking

There is noise and therefore other students are distractedand cant hear the teacher

Students dont know what to do once instructions aregiven

Many students become distracted and off task resulting inthe failure to complete work

Students are not understanding the focused lecture due tolack of concentration

RED HATRed hat is the hat of emotion. Wearing the red hat, you

look at the decision using intuition, gut reaction, and

emotion. Also try to think how other people will react

emotionally, and try to understand the intuitive responses

of people who do not fully know your reasoning .

Students become frustrated because they cant hear

directionsThose talking enjoy joking around and being heard.

BLACK HATBlack hat is the hat of judgment and caution .Try to see why ideas and approaches might not work. This is

important because it highlights the weak points in a plan or

course of action. It allows you to eliminate them, alter yourapproach, or prepare contingency plans to counter problemsthat arise. Black Hat thinking helps to make your planstougher and more resilient. Using black hat thinking, look at all the bad points of the

decision. Look at it cautiously and defensively. Try to see whyit might not work. This is important because it highlights theweak points in a plan. It allows you to eliminate them, alterthem, or prepare contingency plans to counter them.

YELLOW HATYellow hat is the hat of optimism.

The yellow hat helps you to think positively. It is the

optimistic viewpoint that helps you to see all the benefitsof the decision and the value in it, and spot the

opportunities that arise from it. Yellow Hat thinking helps

you to keep going when everything looks gloomy and

difficult.

It can be fun.

Not only the smart kids get to speak.One doesnt have to wait to share their ideas and therefore

risk forgetting information.

GREEN HATGreen hat stands for growth and possibilities.

The Green Hat stands for creativity. This is where you can

develop creative solutions to a problem. It is afreewheeling way of thinking, in which there is little

criticism of ideas. A whole range ofcreativity tools can

help you here.

Teacher will be more aware about the amount of time they spend

talking

Teacher will try to incorporate interaction from a variety of different

students rather than just the smart kids

Students will think of new ways to communicate rather than talking in

class, for example, talk on online forum

BLUE HATThis covers the overview or process control. This person controls the

process, runs the discussion, and decides what hat to put on and

when.on.

Teacher needs to recognize that some students need thinking time

before responding.

Allowing these students time to compute solutions promotes widerparticipation and increased learning.
