After being defeated at Fredericksburg, Burnside was replaced by Hooker4. Hooker was defeated by Lee at Chancellorsville5. Hooker was replaced by Meade as Lee headed North to attack once again

3. Gettysburg1. Union lost 23,000 troops the South lost 28,0002. Union victory strengthened the Republicans3. Great Britain chose once again not to recognize the Confederacy4. Lee remained on the defensive for the rest of the war

4. Gettysburg Address1. Lincoln dedicated the battlefield as a military cemetery2. The Address was not initially revered3. Only later gained the status it holds today

5. Grant secures Tennessee1. After winning at Vicksburg, Grant moves toward Chattanooga2. If they controlled Chattanooga they would control the rail lines to Atlanta3. Grant is placed in charge of the Union forces in the West, then eventually as

promoting him to Lieutenant General after defeating the Confederates at Chattanooga with the combined victories at Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain

5. Grant vs. Lee1. Grant left Sherman in charge in the west while he went to D.C. to face Lee2. Grant attacked relentlessly from The Wilderness to Cold Harbor3. Grant decided to lay siege to Petersburg after encountering it’s formidable

defenses.
