a. The ripcord cable is pulled by the operationof the deployment gun or by manually pulling theripcord.
b. The ripcord pins are removed from the lock-ing loops allowing the side and end flaps to release.
c. The pilot parachute springs from the packand fills with air.
d. The aircrew member’s falling away fromthe pilot parachute causes the canopy and suspen-sion lines to be pulled from the container assembly.
e. The risers are pulled from the container asload is applied activating the automatic survival kitactuator and allowing the canopy to inflate fully.
f. The aircrew member descends suspended inthe harness. By actuating the four-line jettison sys-tem, the aircrew member may maneuver the para-chute to a less hazardous landing site and reduceoscillation during descent.
g. Upon landing, the aircrew member disen-gages the parachute risers from the harness byusing the quick-release fittings.

RIGGING AND PACKING
12-7. GENERAL.
a. Precautions. Under normal conditions, rig-ging and packing will be carried out in a parachuteshop. When a parachute assembly must be packedunder other conditions, provisions must be made toprotect the parachute from possible damage andexcessive humidity. (Refer to Chapter 3.) Care andaccuracy in folding a parachute canopy cannot beoveremphasized. A misplaced shot bag, twists inthe suspension lines, or suspension lines not stowedcompletely within the retainers are mistakes easilymade. Ensure that careful and undivided attentionis given to each procedure.
b. In no case shall the packing of a parachuteassembly be interrupted after the packing operationhas been started. If unavoidable interruptionoccurs, the parachute assembly shall be completelyrepacked in accordance with the instructions con-tained in this section. In this section, ″right″ and″left″ refer to the right and left hand of the riggeras the rigger faces the vent from a position at thepack end of the table.
c. Refer to NOTE under paragraph 5-5 fortacking instructions.
12-8. RIGGING PROCEDURE.
a. Preliminary Procedures (Original Issue). Toprepare the parachute assembly for rigging andpacking, proceed as follows:
(1) Lay out packing tools on packing table, and inspect table and tools for nicks, burrs, orsharp edges which may damage parachuteassembly.
(2) Stretch parachute canopy full length ona clean packing table. Locate gore 28 and place ituppermost in center of packing table.
NOTE
In folding the 28-foot canopy, the prin-cipal reference suspension lines are
numbers 1 and 28 on top and numbers14 and 15 on the bottom.
(3) Secure apex of canopy to tensioningdevice at head of packing table. Separate suspen-sion lines into two equal groups, counting 14 lineson each side of gore 28.

b. Preliminary Procedures Complete Inspec-tion). To prepare the parachute assembly for rig-ging and packing, proceed as follows:
(1) Lay out packing tools on packing table, and inspect table and tools for nicks, burrs, or sharpedges which may damage parachute assembly.
(2) Lay parachute assembly on packingtable in what would be a face-down, head-toward-the-canopy position if an aircrew member werewearing the parachute.
WARNING
Exercise extreme caution any time thisparachute is handled. Ensure thatsafety pin, warning streamer and plugare always engaged in cable assemblyto prevent deployment gun from beingdischarged.

(a) Sever the antenna cable housing ofthe AN/URT-21 locator beacon completely at thepoint where it enters the flute. This will allow theteflon-lined antenna unrestricted separation fromthe riser flute upon landing.
CAUTION
Use extreme care not to damage theantenna when severing the cable hous-ing. Any restraining action to the endof the antenna (stowage of excessantenna in the flute, crimping, handtacking, etc.) may cause the antennato separate from the beacon duringparachute deployment, resulting inineffective operation of the beaconduring parachute descent.
(6) Route flexible antenna through flute onharness and riser. If the flexible antenna protrudesbeyond the riser flute, ensure that the antenna andthe antenna sleeving extend freely from the end ofthe flute. The antenna sleeving may be shortened, but the antenna may not be exposed (AN/URT-33series).

NOTE
The force required to release the hookfrom the clevis shall be 8 to 12pounds. Proper resistance may beobtained by varying shim thickness byfiling, adding or removing shims/washers. The shims/washers may beinstalled on the top or bottom of thespring and can be eliminated entirelyif not required for the proper pullforce. More resistance/adjustmentcan be maintained when the washer isinstalled between the spring andclevis; washers installed on top of thespring are of little use.
(6) Pull all extraction bridle slack frompilot parachute apex until tight. Ensure that noentanglements exist. Store bridle slack under rightside flap using a packing paddle.
