CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Page 3: CHAPTER 3

CNS consists of

• Brain • Spinal cord

Page 4: CHAPTER 3

PNS consists of

• Sympathetic nervous system• Autonomic nervous system

Page 5: CHAPTER 3

• The central nervous system (CNS) is the part of the nervous system that functions to coordinate the activity of all parts of the bodies of living organisms.

• In vertebrates, the central nervous system is enclosed in the protective covering called “meninges”.

• It contains the majority of the nervous system and consists of the brain (in vertebrates which have them), and the spinal cord.

THE BRAIN

Page 9: CHAPTER 3

The brain is the part of the central nervous system located in the skull. It controls the mental processes and physical actions of a human being.

Page 10: CHAPTER 3

Cerebrum

• Cerebrum-largest part of brain. Responsible for reasoning, thought, memory, speech, sensation, etc.

• Divided into two halves.• Further divided into lobes; occipital, parietal,

temporal and frontal

Page 11: CHAPTER 3

Cerebellum

• Cerebellum-responsible for muscle coordination

• Brain stem- most basic functions; respiration, swallowing, blood pressure. Lower part (medulla oblongata) is continuous with spinal cord

Page 12: CHAPTER 3
Page 13: CHAPTER 3

The limbic system is a set of brain structures

including the hippocampus, amygdala, Hypothalamus and limbic cortex, which support a variety of functions including emotion, behavior, long term memory, and homeostasis/balance of the body.

Page 14: CHAPTER 3

The Cerebral Cortex

• The “new Brain” responsible for the most sophisticated information processing in the brain.

• It contains 4 lobes1. Frontal lobe2. Parietal lobe3. Occipital lobe4. Temporal lobe

LOBES

Page 17: CHAPTER 3
Page 18: CHAPTER 3

Functions of Lobes

Page 19: CHAPTER 3

FRONTAL LOBE• Located in front area or behind the forehead. • Concerned with reasoning, planning, parts of

speech and movement (motor cortex), emotions, and problem-solving.

PARIETAL LOBE• Located between frontal and occipital lobe• Concerned with perception of stimuli related

to touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

Page 20: CHAPTER 3

TEMPORAL LOBE• Located on sides of brain or just above the

forhead. • Concerned with perception and recognition of

auditory stimuli (hearing) and memory (hippocampus).

OCCIPITAL LOBE• Located at the back of the brain, behind the

parietal lobe and temporal lobe. • Concerned with many aspects of vision.
