Listening vs. Hearing

Hearing: automated sensory reaction to sound

What kind of listening? Passive Listening: believing the complete responsibility of communication lies with the speaker.

Active Listening: playing an active role in guiding the speaker toward common interests.

We remember only 25% of what we hear.

Rate GapWe speak on average 120-180 (words per minute) wpm

However, we can process information at 275-300 wpm which means we need to practice listening and paying attention.

Four ways to listen: Appreciative: listening for enjoymentDiscriminative: single out specific soundsEmpathic: accept what is said, try to understand, make NO judgements*Critical: examine it closely for logic, value, and worth
