2005 marked the 20th anniversary of the Western Region and the scholarship award and fundraising banquet was held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on April 20. Han Kook Heritage Foundation which procured and developed the collection of Korean art to be exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art co-hosted the event. Keith Wilson, Chief Curator of Asian Art at LACMA, gave congratulatory remarks and 70 college students and 5 high school students were awarded scholarships. This year, many past scholarship recipients stepped forward to become donors, thereby creating a new vision for the foundation’s future called the “Recipient to Donor” (R2D) program. This was a particularly exciting addition to the scholarship program which had primarily relied on community’s support.

The Western Region held the 21st annual scholarship award ceremony at the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles on April 21. Unlike previous years, which combined fundraising and award ceremony,

this year’s event focused solely on the scholarship award ceremony. The keynote speaker was Dr. Sammy Lee, who won two gold and one bronze medalist from consecutive Olympics. A total of $82,800 was awarded to 86 students, including 4 high school achievement awards. The Rev. Dong Sun Lim Chair Scholarship was established by John Lim.

The annual golf tournament fundraiser was held at Robinson Ranch Golf Course on May, 10 with 105 players participating and generated a net income close to $30,000.

The annual golf tournament was again held at the Strawberry Farms Golf Club on October 7 with over 120 players and generated a net income in excess of $40,000.

A pilot online donation program for KASF.org was started in June. It allows anyone to give money over the web to KASF. As a non profit organization, KASF can accept any amount of donation online using Paypal technology which provides donors with a safer, more secure way to donate without sharing their financial information.

To network past recipients who amount close to 4,500 nationwide, Western Region also completed a pilot program that allows users to communicate as a group and/or directly with individuals using a professional networking website called linkedIn. Over 30 past recipients (between 2000~2008) were reconnected and are in active dialogue. The alumni learn about activities in our region.

Tha annual golf tournament was held on June 24 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine. A record number of 151 players helped raise funds and 12 volunteers including former recipients who helped make the event a success.

Community-wide seminars serving college bound students and their parents were planned to be held at the KASF Western Region office periodically in collaboration with The Korea

Thirty seven students were awarded a total of $74,000 of scholarships and the keynote speaker was Jae Min Chang, Chairman and Publisher of The Korea Times who has been recognized by business and civic organizations for his leadership, commitment and support of programs benefiting Korean-American youths, immigrant families as well as the community in general.

Scholarship recipients attending the awards ceremony met with KASF Western Region board members and donors before the ceremony, had a group question and answer session, and had

a chance to meet indivisually with a mentor in the same interest field to share their contact information for continuing communication and guidance in the future.
