•Mental and emotional health: The ability to handle the stresses and changes of everyday life in a reasonable way.

Understanding Mental and Emotional Health

• All sides of this triangle are equally important and interact with each other

• Can you think of examples of how social or physical health affect mental/emotional health?

Accepting Who You Are

• Accepting yourself is a key part of mental and emotional health

• To accept yourself you must first recognize your strengths and work on improving your weaknesses

Definition

•Personality: A combination of your feelings, likes, dislikes, attitudes, abilities and habits.

Influences on Your Personality

• Many factors shape your personality• Three of the most important

factors are heredity, environment and behavior

Heredity

• The passing of biological traits from parents to children

• You can inherit personality traits from your parents such as being outgoing

Environment

• Your environment is your family, friends, neighbors, school and even the climate of where you live.

• An example of this would be coming from a family that is happy and teaches you how to be happy.

Behavior

• Behavior is how you act and is a big part of your personality.

• Of the three factors behavior is the one you have the most control over.

• The actions you choose to take show how you feel about yourself and others.

How to Build Mental and Emotional Health

• You can work to improve your mental and emotional health.

• When these inner qualities are strong, your outer life often shows it.

• The following are some good ways to build strong mental and emotional health……

• Have a good attitude and a positive outlook• Recognize your strengths and work on your

weaknesses• Set realistic goals• Act responsibly• Be able to relax or have fun in a group be

aware of your feelings and express them in healthy ways

• Practice empathy• Accept constructive feedback

•Empathy: Identifying with and sharing another person’s feelings.

•Resilience: The ability to recover from problems or loss.

Building Resilience

• Resilience is an important part of mental and emotional health because it allows you to face challenges and move past them in a healthful way.

• The best way to become more resilient is to make positive choices.

• This can include strengthening relationships and taking part in activities that make a difference to you or others.

• Resilient people often have strong support from family and friends.

Your Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

Definition

•Self-concept: The way you view yourself overall

Your Self-Concept

• Self-concept is how you see yourself as a student, a friend, and as a member of groups, such as sports teams.

• It is based on external output from others as well as internal thoughts and experiences.

• Part of your self-concept is your self-esteem.

• Do you like yourself?• Do you feel good about

who you are?

Why Self-Esteem is Important

• Having good self-esteem helps you take responsibility for your actions

• It gives you a sense of pride in your accomplishments

• It helps you to be more confident around others

• Supporting, loving messages build self-esteem• Critical, hurtful messages break it down.• With this is mind, the TV, radio, and the

internet can also affect your self-esteem.• Your own attitudes and choices you make can

affect self-esteem.

• Each of you will describe a stressful situation that you have dealt with

• Pick your choice of situation, then,• Brainstorm an appropriate strategy for

dealing with that stress and the benefits for using that particular stress management technique
