Vocabulary

1. Glided (v): to move smoothly, effortless, and often graceful way.Ex: Juana glided towards the door in order not to woke Kino up.

2. Stumbled over (v): to hit your foot against something or put your foot downawkwardly while you are walking or running, so thatyou almost fall.Ex: Juana burst clear out of the brush line and stumbled over the little boulders towards the water.

3. Wrenched (V): to twist and pull something from its position using force.Ex: Kino caught up Juana and wrenched the pearl from her while she wanted to throw it into the sea.

4. Hissed at (v): to make a noise which sounds like ‘sss’.Ex: Kino hissed at Juana like a snake, and Juana stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes.

5. disgust (n): a very strong feeling of dislike that almost makes you sick,caused by something unpleasant.Ex: Kino has a sick disgust after he took the pearl from Juana.

6. Dulled (adj.): not interesting or exciting.Ex: Bill’s friends are a pretty dull bunch.

12. Curdled (v): to become thicker or form curd, or to make a liquid do this.Ex: The coconut milk curdled as the temperature cooler and cooler.

13. Exhilaration (n): making somebody feel happy, excited, and more than usuallyvigorous and alive.Ex: When Kino knew that he didn’t lose his pearl he felt a surge of exhilaration.

14. Rummaged (v): to search for something by moving things around in a carelessway.Ex: When Apolonia rummaged in a box by the wall, Kino also arrived by that time.
