  • Chapter 5(Elementary Science)

  • Soil consists of

    rocks,

    particles of sand,

    silt and clay,

remains of dead plants and animals,

    water,

    air,etc.

  • Soil is classified into three groups:

    Clay soil

    Sandy soil

    Loamy soil

  • It has the smallest particles and more compact

    among three soils.It is-

    reddish in colour

Sticky when wet, but smooth when dry

Clay soil can retain water as the particles are tiny, water passes slowly through this soil.

  • It has the largest size particles among three types of soil. It is—

    Pale brown or light grey.

    Dry and feels gritty.

Water can pass through this soil quickly, hence crops do not grow well in this soil.

  • Loamy soil is a mixture of sand, clay and humus. It is—

    Dark in colour.

    Feels coarse, soft and dry.

As it is mixture of sand and clay, it can hold water tightly but drains well.

Most areas in Bangladesh are made up of loamy soil.

Q.1.Why do crops grow well in loamy soil?

Ans: Water is very important for crops to grow. Plants grow in soil because they get water from soil. Loamy soil is a mixture of sand, clay and humus. Due to the properties of sand and clay, it has a tight hold on water but drains well. As a result, paddy, wheat, sugar-cane, etc. grow well in this type of soil.

  • Q.2.What are the characteristics of sandy soil?

Ans: The characteristics of sandy soil are given below:

It is generally pale brown and light grey in colour.

The particles of sandy soil are larger than the particles of clay soil and loamy soil.

It is generally dry and gritty.

It cannot retain much water because of its large-sized particles.

  • Q.3.Mention three differences between loamy soil and clay

    soil.

Ans: Three differences between loamy soil and clay soil are

    given below:Loamy soil Clay soil

1.It is dark in colour. 1. It is reddish in colour.

    2. It feels coarse, soft

    and dry.

    2. It is sticky when wet,

    but smooth when dry.

    3. It contains particles of

    varied sizes.

    3.It has the smallest

    particles among the

    three soils.

    ■ A potter name Velan lived in a village call Puliyur. It was his son’s wedding and he wanted a grand procession on that day. He went to Manikchand a moneylender of that village and asked for his elephant for the grand wedding procession. Everything was going according to plan and on the wedding day the bride and the groom were riding on the elephant. After the wedding was over and Velan was returning with the elephant to Manikchand suddenly thr elephant fell and died. He said the sad story to Manikchand and he took him to court.
