Before European Settlement…A.D. 980 – Viking Erik the Red sailed to
Greenland.
A.D. 1000 – Erik’s son Leif landed on modern-day Newfoundland.
Colonization by France and Great Britain
1497 – John Cabot claims area for England.
1600s – French show up and claim same area.Both countries interested in the fishing/fur
trade.
The countries fought for the land in the French and Indian War (1754-1763).

1791 – British government split Canada into two provinces (Upper/Lower).
This did not end conflict……
Dominion of Canada - 1867It had self-government
but still part of British Empire.

Railway is completed.
Less than a decade later, gold found in Yukon Territory.
Gold and other minerals led to more railroads and towns.
Canada’s Government
Parliamentary government - Legislative and executive functions are combined.
The majority party’s leader in Parliament becomes the prime minister – or head of the government.
