The delegation of Punjab Architects visited Chinese buildingmaterialsindustrytohavefirsthandknowledgeaboutvariousproducts. The delegation was comprised of ten architectsincludingArHarinderBoparai,ArRajanTangri,ArBalbirBagga,ArYogeshSingla,ArTarsemGoel,ArBaljitBawa,ArVaruneshKumra,ArNiranjanKumarandAshwaniKumar.
Hong Kong based companies “Jay Gee Trading” and “DBHAOverseas” received the delegation from Guangzhou airportand escorted them to Foshan, the major centre of furnitureindustryjust80kmsfromtheworldfamousmegacityofChina,Guangzhou.
Theprimeaimwas to seemanufacturingofhigh-end interiorproducts like sofas, dining tables, beds, office furniture, wallpapers,hardwares,etc.
The delegation was very warmly welcomed by Ryan Zhang,Vice President of Louvre Furnishing Group, one of the leadinginternational furniture mall of Foshan. It was followed by thethanks-givingspeechfromLudhianaCentreChairmanSanjayGoel.Louvremall is probably the biggest furnituremall having 2000brandsondifferentfloorsdedicatedtomostbeautifulandqualitymodernaswellasclassicalfurniture.LotsofIndiancelebritiesandbollywoodstarsusedtovisitthismallfortheirpurchases.
China is a verybig furnituremarketas compared to India. AlotofleadingIndiansandothernationalslandsinChinaalmostevery day to purchase highend products for their houses,apartments, hotels, schools, resorts, showroomsandoffices .ThequalityandquantityoffurnitureavailableinjustonemallisprobablyalmostequaltosameavailableinwholeofNorthIndia.
The Indian delegation also visited world famous ChinaInternational Furniture Fair (CIFF) in Guangzhou displayingoutdoor furniture,classical furniture,modern furniture,officefurniture,modularkitchens,tiles,hardwareandendnumberofinteriorproducts.
Architectsalsodid thetownplanninganddevelopmentstudyofadjoiningcitieslikeShundeandShenzhentoseeandlearnhow theymanage theirwater supply, sewerage, landscaping,traffictransportation,electrification,roads,etc.
Architects was overwhelmed by the warm hospitality duringthe stay by DBHAOverseas’s Dinesh Kalra(DK), Harsh Aggarwal,AameenKalra,GarishandJayGeeTrading’sHarjinderSinghJauria,Gurjeet Singh,KayHuangandKatrinaZhang.ArchitectsenjoyedbeautifulmusicaleveningsandrelishedvariousChinesedelicacies.
ThegroupalsohadalongridethroughworldfamousMegapoliscityofGuangzhoutoseeitsvastinfrastructureincludingairport,metro,buses,roads,flyovers,marketsandofcoursebeautifulskyscrapers.Afewotherobservationsofdelegationare:-• Chinabeingbigger countrywithhardworkingpeoplehas
moremanufacturingunitswithqualityproducts,probablyduetothesupportivegovernmentpolicies.
• Delegation felt that quality of most of the products isbetterthanIndiaperhapsmainlyduetotopclassmodernfactorieswith latest and fully automaticequipments andabovealldedicationofthemassestowardstheirjobs.

WorldHabitatDaywas celebratedby IIA-LC in Ludhiana. ThisdayiscelebratedonfirstMondayofeveryOctoberallovertheWorld.October6,isalsotheBirthdayofGreatFrenchArchitectLeCorbusier.
HS Gohalwaria,Mayor of LudhianaMunicipal Corporation (LMC)wasChiefGuest.Hewelcomedtheideatocelebratethisdayanddiscusssmartcitiesindetail.Ludhianahasbeenshortlistedin100smartcitiesofIndiatobedevelopedbypresentUnionGovernment.
MayorcongratulatedthewholeteamofIIA-LCandassuredthatLMCwill take Architects’ guidance fromtime to time for thebettermentofcity.
PardeepAggarwal,CommissionerofLMC,wasGuestofHonour.Helikedtheeventandsharedhisopinionaboutvariousissuesconcernedwith thecity.Hewashappy tosee localarchitectsworkingforthewelfareofthecity.

ArSanjayGoelChairmanofIIA-LC,inhisdetailedpresentationtouchedallthetownplanningrelatedambiguitiesofLudhianacitywithsolutions.Themainfailureisthelackofco-ordinationbetween many agencies responsible for the development ofcity. Theremust be single agency like LudhianaDevelopmentAuthority(LDA)ratherthensomanyagencies.
Ar Surinder Bahga was specially invited. He was very muchconcernedabouteverincreasingpollutionlevelinLudhianaasoneofthetopCityinIndiainincreasingpollutionlevelaffectingourhabitatbadly.HehasgivenpresentationoncontemporarycapitalcitieslikeChandigarh,Islamabad,Canberra,Brasilia,etc.

CT InstituteofArchitectureandPlanningcelebratedWorldHabitatDayincollaborationwiththeInstitutionofEngineersandIIAJalandharSub-CentreatitsShahpurcampuson6thOctober,2014.Theeventwas inauguratedbyChairmanofCT Group of Institutions Charanjit Singh Channi and ChiefEngineer, Local Bodies (Punjab), Er Manmohan Singh. Heinformed that the United Nations had chosed the theme‘Voices from Slums’ for the World Habitat Day 2014campaign.Itaimstorecognizelifeinslumsandgiveavoiceto slum dwellers for improving quality of living in existingslums by raising awareness, developing processes and byothersmeans.
In the forum, experts highlighted their views on thedeterioratinglivingconditionsofslums.ErManmohanSinghemphasizedthatthereisaneedtodemonstratetodecisionmakers in the urban arena that slum programmes canachievebetter livingconditions forslumdwellers.ErSinghsharedexperienceson slumupgradationamong citiesandurbanareasworldwide.Heencouragedthecontributionstoapolicydialoguethatfocusesonthebroadrangeofissuesrelatedtotheintegrationofthelifeintheslumintothecity.
OtherdignitariescomprisingGroupDirector(CTInstitutions)DrManojKumar,ErDPSinghVirk,FIE,Chairman(IEI.LLC),ArSurinderBahgaandErNalinTayal, (Secretary IEI, LudhianaLocal Centre) also emphasized on identifying the policyformulationandcapacitydevelopmentissuesinwhichUN-Habitatcanoffersignificantcontributions.
Anothergroupdiscussionwasalsoorganisedonthetheme‘ImportanceofWater inToday’sHabitat’.DrManojKumarsaid,“Weshouldfocusonconservingourwaterbodies.HesaidthatthedepthofDalLakewas3.5Kmin1965butnowit has decreased to 1.5metre. He emphasized that floodsin JammuandKashmir is theoutcomeof that negligence,we should make proper efforts to conserve our waterbodiesbyputting regular check.DrKumar said thatPrimeMinister,NarendraModiencouragedtheIndianstopromotecleanlinessandhygiene in thecountry,but that requiresacontinuous process. The motive will not be accomplishedwithasingledaywork.
ThestudentsofArchitecturealsodisplayedtheirartisticskills.Anexhibitionwasalsoorganiseddisplayingthepaintingsandartworkofthestudents.

The3rdFridayofeverymonthhadbeenscheduledfortheprofessional interaction and active participation amongstthemembersof the IIA-NC .TheSeptember2014episodeof “Chai, Coffee&Architecture”– a platform conceivedbytheNorthernChapterof the Indian InstituteofArchitects,forarchitectstodebateanddiscussissuesofconcernintheprofession,was organized on 5th September 2014 at 5.30pm.This14thepisodeof“Chai,Coffee&Architecture”washeldattheSchoolofPlanning&Architecture,NewDelhi.
This session discussed and shared information onArchitectural Education. It was highlighted that with thepresence of 400 plus colleges, admitting an average of 60students per batch, means making of 24,000 architects
every year. It is quite natural that quality of such a largenumberofarchitects,coming fromall sortsof institutions,willhaveavastdifferenceintheirrespectiveabilities.Takingthefacts incognizance, itbecameclearthat innearfuturethe profession of Architecture is going to be floodedwithArchitectswhomaynotbe‘fit’forpractice,andmayalsonotbe‘employable’.
Thissessioninparticularrecordedanimpressiveparticipationby 53 architects and some students of architecture. Thesession concluded with an understanding that it must becarriedovertoaonedayworkshopbyIIANorthernChapterinvolvingawiderspectrumofissueswithprominentspeakersfromarchitecturalpracticeaswellasfromfieldofeducation.
WORLD BAMBOO DAY MaharajaAgrasenUniversityhascelebratedWorldBambooDayon19thSeptember,2014atitscampus.
World Bamboo Day is celebrated to generate awarenessaboutbamboogloballysince2009. It isaimedatexploringthe possibilities of its uses in design as it is a sustainablematerialhavingexcellentfeaturessuchasflexibility,strengthand resistance against earthquake,winds, fastest growing,etc.Itisacheapermaterialanddurablewhichcanbeusedwidely.
Ar Neerja Babbar, Professor and Head of School ofArchitecture&Designwelcomedthespeakers.Programmestartedwith lightingof thetraditional lamp. StudentsandteachersallwelcomedtheinitiativeofuniversitytocelebrateWorldBambooDay.
Keynote speakerswereAr Surinder Bahga andDr RanjanaYadav, Scientist of Indian Plywood Industries Research &Training Institute(IPIRTI),anautonomousbodyofMinistryofEnvironmentandForests.Itwasfollowedbyaworkshopon various types of usage of bamboo. Surinder BahgaexplainedthatBambooisbeingusedonalargescaleintheworldforconstructionindustry.Itisbeingusedforflooring,furniture and roofing in buildings. Countries like VietnamandIndonesiahavedonemarvelousworkinthefield.Indiacontributesnearly45%ofbamboointheworldmarket.
EminentscientistDrRanjanaYadavdiscussedaboutqualitiesofbamboo,itsstrengthsandprocessingtechniques.Shealsoshoweddifferenttypesofsamplesofbambootostudents.The current estimated trade in bamboo is five billion USdollars.Bamboorelatedindustriesprovidefood,incomeandhousingtoover2.2billionpeople.

Thisyear too, theawardswill takeacollectiveviewof thejury and recognize architectural excellence and innovationthatourcountryhastooffer.
