CHAPTERONE

TheMunchkins

DorothylivesinasmallgrayhouseinKansaswithherUncleHenry,AuntEm and little dog, Toto. Everything in Kansas is gray. There are no trees orflowers, but there are cyclones'. Cyclones are very strong winds. They cansometimesblowpeopleandhousesaway.

One day Uncle Henry looks at the gray sky. He says, "A cyclone iscoming!Wemustgotothecellar!"

"Comewithusquickly,Dorothy!"saysAuntEm.They run to the door of the cellar but Toto is afraid. He runs into the

bedroomandunderthebed.Dorothyrunsafterhim."LeaveTotoandcometothecellarnow!"criesAuntEm.Dorothy picks Toto up and runs to the door of the cellar. But at that

momentsomethingstrangehappens.The cyclone is very strong and it picks the house up and takes it, with

DorothyandTotoinside,intothesky.UncleHenryandAuntEmcanonlywatchfromthecellar.

Thehousefliesandfliesintheskyformanyhours.DorothyandTotoarealoneandafraid.Aftersome time theybecomevery tiredand they fallasleep.When theywakeup, thehouse ison theground.Everything isquiet.Dorothyopensthedoorquietlyandgoesout.Itisasunnydayandsheseestalltreesandbeautifulflowerseverywhere.

"This isn't Kansas, Toto," says Dorothy, "Where are we? And who arethosepeople?"Dorothycanseethreeshortmenandanoldwoman.Themenarewearing blue hats, blue clothes and blue shoes. The old woman is wearing abeautifulwhitedress.

She looksatDorothyandsays,"We'reveryhappy.Youbringgood luck.TheWickedWitchoftheEastisdead!

TheMunchkins are her people. They're happy now because she's dead.Thankyou,deargirl."

Dorothyissurprised,"Idon'tunderstand,"shesays.

insurprise.Theoldwoman takes the silver shoes from theWickedWitch's feet and

givesthemtoDorothy."They'reyourshoesnow.Youmustwearthembecauseawitch'sshoescan

dogreatthings.""Butareyouawitch,too?"asksDorothy."Yes,I'mtheWitchoftheNorth.I'magoodwitch.""Agoodwitch?Idon'tunderstand.Wherearewe?"saysDorothy."We'reintheLandofOz.HereintheLandofOztherearefourwitches,"

saystheWitchoftheNorth,"TheWitchesoftheNorthandSouthareverygoodwitches.ButtheWickedWitchesoftheEastandtheWestareverybadwitches.NowtheWickedWitchoftheEastisdead.There'sonlyoneWickedWitch,theWickedWitchoftheWest."

"CanyoupleasehelpmegohometoKansas?"asksDorothy."Kansas?Where'sKansas?" asks theGoodWitch, "I'm sorry but I can't

help you.Youmust go and see theWizard ofOz in theEmeraldCity.He's aGoodWizardandhecanhelpyou."

"WhereistheEmeraldCity?"asksDorothy."Itisfaraway.Youmustwalkthere,"saystheGoodWitch."Canyoucomewithme?"asksDorothy."No, Ican'tcomewithyou.But Icangiveyoumykiss," says theGood

Witch.ShegivesDorothyakissonherforehead.Herkississpecialandlookslikealittleredflower."Nownothingcanhurtyou,"saystheGoodWitch,"Theyellowbrickroad

It is a sunnyday in theLandof theMunchkins.Dorothy andTotowalkalongtheyellowbrickroadallday.

WhenDorothyistired,shesitsdownbytheroadnearaScarecrow.Suddenly,theScarecrowsmilesather.Sheisverysurprised."CanaScarecrowsmile?"shethinks.ThentheScarecrowsays,"Hello!""Oh!"saysDorothy,"Youcanspeak!""OfcourseIcanspeak,"says theScarecrow,"ButIcan'tmove.Canyou

helpme?"DorothyhelpstheScarecrowtomovefromhispost."Thankyouverymuch,"hesays,movinghisarmsandlegs.There'sstraw

everywhere."Whoareyou?"heasks,"Andwhereareyougoing?""My name is Dorothy. I'm going to the Emerald City. I must find the

WizardofOz.HecanhelpmegobackhometoKansas.""WhereistheEmeraldCity?"heasks,"AndwhoistheWizardofOz?""Don'tyouknow?"asksDorothy."No,Idon'tknowanything,"hesays,"Idon'thaveabraininmyhead:I

onlyhavestraw.""I'mverysorry,''saysDorothy."Iwant a brain," says the Scarecrow, "Can theWizard ofOz giveme a

cycloneseveryyear.IliveinalittlehousewithmyAuntEmandUncleHenry.""WhydoyouwanttogobacktograyKansas?"askstheScarecrow,"This

country is very beautiful. There are a lot of trees and flowers. I don'tunderstand."

"You don't understand because you don't have a brain,'' says Dorothy,"KansasismyhomeandIlovemyhome.Myauntandunclelivethere.''

The Scarecrow looks at her and smiles. Dorothy and Toto finish theirbread.

"Well,let'sgo!''saysDorothy,"TheEmeraldCityisfaraway."IntheeveningDorothyistired.Theyseealittlehousebehindsometrees.

Nooneisinthehousesotheygoin.DorothyandTotosleep,buttheScarecrowdoesn't.

Helaughsandsays,"Scarecrowsdon'tsleep."

TheTinWoodman

ThenextmorningDorothyandtheScarecrowhearaloudnoiseoutsidethehouse.

"What'sthat?"asksDorothy."Idon'tknow,''saystheScarecrow,"Let'sgoandsee."Theyrunoutofthehousetothetrees.Theyseeastrangetinmanbyatree.

Hehasanaxinhishands."Help!Help!"criesthestrangeman."What'sthematter?"asksDorothy."Ican'tmove!"saystheTinWoodman,"Canyouputsomeoilonmyarms

andlegs,please?There'sanoilcaninmyhouse."Dorothyrunsbacktothehouseandgetstheoilcan.ShetakesittotheTin

Woodman and they put some oil on his arms and legs. He slowly begins tomove.Firsthemoveshishead,thenhisarmsandlegs.

"Thankyou!"hesays,"Ifeelbetternow.SometimesIgetwetintherain.Waterisverybadformytinbody.Whoareyouandwhereareyougoing?"

"I'mDorothyandthisistheScarecrow.We'regoingtotheEmeraldCitytofindtheWizardofOzbecausehecanhelpmegobacktoKansas.PerhapshecanalsogivetheScarecrowabrain."

"CantheWizardofOzgivemeaheart?"askstheTinWoodman,"Idon'thaveaheartandIcan'tloveanyone.Thereisnohappinesswithoutlove."

"Whydon'tyoucomewithus?"saystheScarecrow."Yes,youcanasktheWizardforaheart,"saysDorothy."Thank you,my friends," says theTinWoodman and they startwalking

again.ThethreefriendsandTotowalkalongtheyellowbrickroad.Theylookat

allthetalltreesneartheroad.Therearealotofnoisescomingfromthedifferentanimalsbehindthetrees.

Suddenly a Lion jumps out into the road. He opens his big mouth and

roars.HehasbigteethandwantstobiteToto.DorothyisafraidforTotoandsherunstotheLionandhitshimonthenosewithherbasket."Don'thurtmydog!''shecriesangrily,"He'ssmallandyou'rebig."

"Don'thitme,please,''saystheLion."You'reafraid!" saysDorothy. "You'reaLionandyou'reafraid.You'rea

coward!""Yes,Iamacoward.LionsmustbecourageousbutI'mnot.Imakealotof

noise,butIamacoward,"saystheLionsadlyashestartscrying."Don'tcry!"saysDorothy,"ComewithustotheEmeraldCity.Perhapsthe

WizardofOzcangiveyoucourage."So they all continue walking along the yellow brick road. At one point

theyseeabigriver."Howcanwecrosstheriver?"asksDorothy.TheLionlooksattheriverandsays,"Icanjumpacross,butI'mafraid.""Don'tbeafraid!"saystheScarecrow,"You'reastrongLion.Youcantake

usonyourback,onebyone.""All right, Icando that,"says theLion,"Youdon'thaveabrainhutyou

havegoodideas,Scarecrow,"AndsotheLionjumpsacrosstheriver.HetakestheScarecrowfirst,and

thenhetakesDorothyandToto.HetakestheTinWoodmanlast.

TheEmeraldCity

The four friendswalk all day. In the evening they see some little greenhouses and some little people in green clothes. "Everything's green,'' saysDorothy,"We'reneartheEmeraldCity."

Soontheycometoabiggreendoor.Itopensslowly,andtheyseealittlemaningreenclothesandgreenglasses.

"WewanttoseetheWizardofOz,please,"saysDorothy."OK.Followme,"saysthelittleman,"Butfirstputtheseon."Heopensabigboxandinsidetherearelotsofpairsofgreenglasses."You must wear these glasses. Everybody in the Emerald City wears

them."SotheyputontheglassesandgointotheEmeraldCity.TheystopinfrontofthePalaceofOz.Amanopensthedoor."Followme," he says.He takes them into a big green room, "Nowwait

hereuntilIcallyou."Whenhereturnshesays,"TheWizardwantstoseethegirlfirst."

Dorothygoesintoabeautifulroom.Onagreenchairthereisonlyaverybighead,withoutabody,armsorlegs.

Sheissurprisedandafraid."IamOz,"saysthebighead,"Whoareyouandwhatdoyouwant?""I'mDorothyandIwanttogohometoKansas.Idon'tknowtheway.Can

youhelpme,please?"Thebigeyesopenandclose.Thenthemouthopensandspeaks."PerhapsIcanhelpyou.Butfirstyoumustkill theWickedWitchof the

West.""Oh,no!"saysDorothy,"Idon'twanttokillanyone.""TheWickedWitchof theEast isdead.You'rewearingher silver shoes.

goesin.ButtheScarecrowdoesnotseeabighead:heseesabeautifulwoman."Oh,greatOz,pleasegivemeabrain,"saystheScarecrow."FirstyoumustkilltheWickedWitchoftheWest,"saysOz.TheTinWoodmanenters thegreen room.He sees anuglymonsterwith

fiveeyes,fivearmsandfivelegs."Oh,greatOz,pleasegivemeaheart,"saystheTinWoodman."First,youmusthelpDorothyandtheScarecrowkilltheWickedWitchof

theWest,"saysOz.TheTinWoodmanleavestheroomandtheLiongoesin.Heseesabigball

offire.Heisafraid!"Oh,greatOz,pleasegivemecourage,"saystheLion."IcanonlygiveyoucouragewhentheWickedWitchoftheWestisdead."Whenthefriendsmeet,theytalkaboutthestrangeWizard."Now we must find the Wicked Witch of the West and kill her," says

Dorothy."Yes,wemust!"theyallsay.ThefriendsleavetheEmeraldCitytofindtheWickedWitchoftheWest.

Ontheirwayouttheygivetheirglassestothelittlemanatthegate.Dorothyaskshim,"WhereistheWickedWitchoftheWest?Wemustfind

her.""She lives in theLand of theWinkies," he says, "Youmustwalk to the

West.Becareful!Sheisverybadandeveryoneisafraidofher."So Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion and Toto start

walkingtotheWest.Theywalkforalongtime.AbovetheminhercastletheWickedWitchoftheWestwatchesthem.The

WickedWitchhasamagiceyeandcanseeeverything.

TheWickedWitchoftheWest

TheWitch blows her silver whistle and fortyWingedMonkeys quicklyarrive.

"Whatdoyouwant?"theKingoftheWingedMonkeysasks."Therearethreepeople,adogandaliononmyroad,"shesays."Goandkillthepeopleandthedog.Butbringmethelion.Heisbigand

strong.Hecanworkforme.""Yes,immediately!"saytheWingedMonkeys,andtheyflyaway.Theyquickly reach the road, and see the four friends and thedog.They

break the Tin Woodman's arms and legs. They take the straw out of theScarecrow and throw his clothes into a tree. Then they take the Lion to theWickedWitch'scastle.

TheWingedMonkeysdonothurtDorothyandTotobecausetheyseethegoodwitch'skissonDorothy'sforehead.TheydecidetotakethemtotheWickedWitch'scastlewiththeLion.

TheWickedWitchsees thekissonDorothy's faceandshe isafraid.Butshedoesn'tsayanything.

"Ha,ha!Nowyouaremyprisoner.Youmustworkinmyhouseeveryday.Cleanthisdirtykitchen!"shesaystoDorothy,"Remember,Icanwatchyouallthetime!"

Dorothylooksathersadlyandstartstocleanthekitchen."HowcanIgobacktoKansasnow?"shethinks.Sheisveryunhappy.Dorothydoesnotknowhershoesaremagic,buttheWickedWitchknows,

andshewantsthem.OnemorningDorothy'sleftshoefallsoff.TheWickedWitchquicklytake

itandsays,"Thisismyshoenow!""No,itisn't!"criesDorothyangrily,"Giveittome!"TheWickedWitch then tries to take theother shoe too.Dorothy isvery

angry because she loves her silver shoes. She sees a bucket ofwater near the

dressandhersilverwhistle.Dorothylooksforherbutcannotfindher.Sheputsherleftshoeonagain."NowIamfreeandIcanhelpmyfriends,"Dorothysays,"PerhapsIcan

calltheWingedMonkeys."Shepicksupthewitch'ssilverwhistleandlooksatit."Isthisamagicwhistle?"shethinks.SheblowsitandtheWingedMonkeysarrive.Sheissurprisedandhappy."Canyouhelpmyfriends?"sheasks."Yes," says one Monkey, "We always help the person with the magic

whistle."

TheWingedMonkeysfindtheLionandfreehim.Heishappynow.TheyfindtheScarecrow'sclothesandputsomestrawinthem.TheScarecrowlaughsandsays,"Thankyou!"

ThentheWingedMonkeyshelptheTinWoodman.Theygivehimanewoilcan.

"NowIcanmovemyarmsandlegs.Thankyou!"hesays."TheWickedWitchoftheWestisdead!"saysDorothytoherfriends.Everyoneisveryhappy."WemustgobacktotheWizardofOzandtellhim,"saysDorothy,"The

WingedMonkeyscantakeusbacktotheEmeraldCity.""Blowthemagicwhistle!"saystheTinWoodman.Dorothy blows the whistle and the monkeys come again. They carry

Dorothyandherfriendsupintothesky.SoontheyareatthegreendooroftheEmeraldCity.The littlegreenmanopens thedoor.Hegives themglassesandtakesthemtothePalace.TheygototheWizard'sroom,butnooneisthere.

Avoicesays,"IamtheWizardofOz.""Whereareyou?"asksDorothy."Iameverywhere,butyoucan'tseeme,"saystheWizard,"Whoareyou

andwhatdoyouwant?""Don't you remember us? I'm Dorothy! I'm here with my friends the

Scarecrow, theTinWoodman and theLion.TheWickedWitchof theWest isdeadandyoumustkeepyourpromise.IwanttogohometoKansas."

"Yes,"saystheScarecrow,"theWickedWitchisdeadsoyoumustgivemeabrain."

"Andyoumustgivemeaheart,"saystheTinWoodman."AndIwantsomecourage,"saystheLion."IstheWickedWitchoftheWestreallydead?"askstheWizard."Yes,sheis!"theyallsay.

me!""ButtheWizardisabigheadwithnobody,"saysDorothy."No,it'sabeautifulwoman,"saystheScarecrow."You'rewrong,it'samonsterwithfiveeyes,fivearmsandfivelegs,"says

theTinWoodman."No,"saystheLion,"TheWizardisabighalloffire.""You'reallwrong,"says the littlemanquietly,"IamtheWizard,but I'm

notarealWizard.I'mfromKansastoo.Iliketravelinginhot-airballoons.ThatiswhyI'mhere."

"Oh!"saythefourfriendsandtheylookateachother."ThepeopleherethinkI'mawizardbecauseIcomefromthesky,"saysthe

little man, "I live inside this Palace and never go out. No one must see me.EveryonemustthinkI'marealwizard."

The Scarecrow takes off his glasses and says, "The Emerald City isn'tgreen. It just looks green, because everyone wears green glasses. It's a trick!Everythinghereisatrick!"

"Yes, it's a trick," says the little man sadly, "I'm very sorry, but I don'tknowanymagicsoIcan'thelpyou."

"You'reabadman,"saysDorothy.

"Pleasesitdown,"saysOz,"FirstImustopenyourhead.ThenIcanputyourbrainintherightplace.Nowdon'tmove."

The littlemanopensagreenboxwith theword"brain"on it.HeslowlyputsabrainintotheScarecrow'shead.

"NowyouhaveabrainyouareaverycleverScarecrow," saysOz. "Oh,thankyou!"saystheScarecrow,"Ifinallyhaveabrain!"

TheTinWoodmanisnext.Heisexcited."Whereismyheart?"heasks.Ozgoestoabiggreenboxandtakesoutabeautifulredheart."Hereisaspecialredheart.Wearitallthetime,"saysOz."Isitakindheart?"askstheTinWoodman."Yes,it'saverykindheart,"saysOz.'I'm very happy! Thank you!" says the TinWoodman. "Now I can love

someone.""Nowyoumustgivemecourage!''saystheLion.Ozgiveshimagreenbottlewiththeword"courage"onit."Drinkthis!"hesaystotheLion.TheLiondrinksitquicklyandthensmiles."NowIfeelcourageous,very
