GWRRA MEMBERSHIP AND SUPPORT

Members will receive a “Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Inc. NEW MEMBER Orientation Guide“ at their first meeting. (If you need more copies you can find it on the GWRRA National Web Site.)

In this Guide they will find: A Welcome History Benefits Structure and Organization Membership Categories Chapter Life Apparel (Vests, Pins, and Patches) Rallies Terminology Closing.

It is important to remember that GWRRA has members, Chapters have participants. Chapter membership is considered non-existent. A Chapter is composed of PEOPLE, not a plot of land and therefore, GWRRA makes every attempt not to dwell on an individual’s “home chapter” and the members and guests make their own decisions as the Chapters they wish to support. The members belong to every Chapter that exists within GWRRA. Chapters do not receive any funds or portions of your membership fees and relay solely on the continued participation of the GWRRA members at their meetings for 50/50 drawing, raffles, etc. so once again our success is measured by your participation. So get out there and get involved in the fun. WE ARE GLAD THAT YOU ARE WITH US…it will beeeee memorable!!!!!

WING DING

Throughout this package you are going to see a lot of activities hosted by ourselves, other Chapter, District Staff, and Regional Staff. But let’s not forget the biggest event of all sponsored by GWRRA. WING DING!!!! If you have never been to a Wing Ding…you have no idea what you are missing. Wing Ding is a nationwide rally held during the first week of July (2nd through 5th) complete with vendors, training seminars, bike show, skill events, rides, light parade, drill team performances, National Couple of the Year competition, Chapter challenges, people games, opening/ closing ceremonies, 50/50, talent show, grand prizes, etc., etc. etc. An average of 11,000 Gold Wingers attend this rally every year. It is by far the rally of all rallies. On average, 1,400 bikes participate in the light parade. That’s lots of bikes!!!! That’s a lot of fun!!! The most striking feature of a Wing Ding is how much like a family reunion is it. Gold Wingers are anxious to get to know each other and there is always a new face to meet and great memories to take home. One of the next best features of a Wing Ding is the location changes every year bringing a different flavor of the country. This also brings a rally closer to our neck of the woods every couple of years. The following sites have hosted as Wing Ding.

Year Location 1979 Phoenix, Arizona 1980 Phoenix, Arizona 1981 Phoenix, Arizona 1982 Steamboat Springs, Colorado 1983 Steamboat Springs, Colorado 1984 Lake of the Ozark, Mississippi 1985 Knoxville, Tennessee 1986 Santa Clara, California 1987 Knoxville, Tennessee 1988 Snowmass/Aspen, Colorado 1989 Madison, Wisconsin 1990 Knoxville, Tennessee 1991 Tulsa, Oklahoma 1992 Madison, Wisconsin 1993 Louisville, Kentucky 1994 Albuquerque, New Mexico 1995 Greenville, South Carolina 1996 Madison, Wisconsin 1997 Billings, Montana 1998 Huntsville, Alabama 1999 Springfield, Missouri 2000 Billings, Montana 2001 Greenville, South Carolina 2002 Fort Wayne, Indiana 2003 Madison, Wisconsin 2004 Grapevine, Texas 2005 Fort Wayne, Indiana 2006 Nashville, Tennessee 2007 Billings, Montana

General Chapter Information

CHAPTER HISTORY

21 Gold Wing enthusiasts from Bremerton, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Union, Tacoma, Puyallup and Clallum Bay attented the first Chapter B meeting at the Holiday Inn in Bremerton on January 18,1981. Bob Merriman, the catalyst behind establishing the state’s second Chapter was riding a black, 1978 GL 1000 at the time assumed the position of Area Representative (now referred to as Chapter Director). Bob and Doris began the new Chapter with 38 Charter Members and work diligently to accumulate over 200 active members by the end of the year. With their energy they made Chapter B the Chapter that set the pace for the rest of the state. If there was a plaque or trophy to be won, Chapter B took it home. It was not uncommon to find Bob leading a pack of f 20-30 bikes off to a rally.

On December 12th of that year, they hosted the first annual Christmas Gathering at the VFW Hall in Bremerton with the promise of food, music and good friendship. A $10.00 ticket got you a feast of top sirloin steak, baked potato, vegetable, and salad. Unfortunately we had to raise the price to around $15.00 per ticket, but after 17 years we still have an annual Christmas Party that offers food, music, and good friendship.

On May 1, 1983 Bob kicked off the first Chapter B Benefit Run for the Handicapped Children. A one-day event complete with a drill team performance by the Seattle Cossacks and a street dance. The $7.00 donation provided a opportunity for chance at the grand prize- a new motorcycle. Attendence wasn’t the difficult part of the rally, convincing Holly Ridge to be the recipient of the profits was the obstacle. Seems they weren’t quite sure what to make of the motorcycle organization. The run was proclaimed “Washington Governor’s Run” in 1985 by the Governor Booth Gardner due to its huge success and growth as a charity event. In 1995, the event expanded to two full days and has raised total contribution over the last 23 years exceeds $245,000.00. In 1998 the event was renamed “Bob Merriman Memorial Washington Governor’s Run” in honor of Bob who passed away in August of 1997. The donation had to be raised to $25.00, but Bob’s dream of the best rally in the northwest ever still lives true. The following director’s have met that challenged of keeping this the best Chapter ever… Bob & Doris Merriman January 1982 – 1986 BJ & Kit Lyman 1987 – 1988 John Christ 1989 – 1990 Randy Wilson 1990 – 1991 Ken & Joyce Amos 1/1991 – 9/1993 Will Street 9/1993 – 5/1995 Dave Bartelheim 5/1995 – 5/1997 Glen Van Wyk 5/1997 – 9/1998

Eric & Mona Carlson 9/1998 - 9/2000 Scott Caldwell 9/2000 - 5/2001 Mike & Bijou White 5/2001 - 6/2001 Dave Westcott 6/2001 – 3/2003 DJ & Cass Moore 3/2003 – 1/2004 Bob & Becky Minor 1/2004 – 6/2006 Doug & Jean Clark 6/2006 - current

….and while every neighboring chapter has “beeeee” roots, Chapter B is still wearing the color blue, sporting a Bee mascot, and is by far the chapter to be reckoned with. You will hear us arrive and know that we are there. For Bob…we intend to continue to be the Chapter known to be having fun and going strong!!!

CHAPTER RECOGNITION

Every Chapter is represented by a “color” and a Mascot…..

Chapter B’s MASCOT, for somewhat obvious reason, is a “bee” – a big, fat, happy bumble bee. Many of us, much to our children’s dismay, proudly wear our bee gloves, bee slippers, bee pins, and bee outfits, etc. At our campsites we proudly display our bee lights, bee windsocks, bee signs, bee doormat, etc. We Have a Mascot “BUZZ” who occasionally takes off on the back of a motorcycle to visit other Chapters, he his own Chapter Visitation pin and is collecting Bars from all over. You will find the BEE Newsletter littered with “beeeee columns”, “from bee hive”, “beee-yond the driveway”, beee-Briefs”, “what would Beeeee” for sale, Hopefully, you received your first” Bee newsletter at your first meeting or off the web - trust us, it will Bee the first of many. Actually you might find your Beeeee collection cheaper than chrome!!!!

Our Chapter COLOR is Light-sky blue, which is represented by wearing a blue shirt under your BLACK GWRRA vest, a light blue baseball-type jacket, a light blue sweatshirt, windshield cover or Chapter flag.

• For: dresser” occasions we wear a button up dress shirt. Many of us have found a nice comfortable shirt at JCPennys. It is one of their standard lines (Stafford) and it is reasonably priced. - It appears they will carry it for quite awhile. They offer both long and short sleeves…just remember that GWRRA encourages long sleeves when riding, so some of us have some long & some short!!

• On a lighter side, a T-shirt or polo shirt serves the purpose. Ones with Chapter Logo available through the Chapter Store.

• Jackets are light/ medium weight satin, baseball type with the GWRRA and Chapter logo on them and have to “BEEEEE” special ordered through the Chapter Store and Prices vary depending on weight/size and availability.

• Many of us have blue Chapter flags and windshield covers for our bikes… but those are much harder to come by, as we generally have to relay on someone willing to dust off their sewing machines. But don’t hesitate to ask… if it isn’t in the Chapter Store, the storekeeper will “beee” able to direct you to the best source.

Generally, we wear our “colors” at just about every function – as do the other Chapters. “Wearing Colors” is a vital part of the camaraderie. Most GWRRA members wear a BLACK VEST “Leather or Linen (it cooler)” with their GWRRA patches, Chapter Rockers, and other events pins, rider education accomplishments, name tags, mementoes, etc. Of course the most important part of your vest is your NAMETAG, since most of us can remember what bike you ride.. We just can’t remember names to well!!! As for everything else, just about anything goes, however, GWRRA require that the National LOGO cannot be subordinate to any other patch. The only official back patch is the 10” National LOGO – which can be off set with chapter rockers identifying the Chapter, City and state. & The 4” Chest-type LOGO can also be off set by staff position designations.

DINNER SOCIALS

DINNER SOCIALS are held 10 days after the regular meeting on a “Wednesday night”. At 6:30PM

The locations change for every social in order to meet all our members varied tastes and to try out NEW place. We try to go places on the Kitsap Cards. During the summer months we try to keep it on the light side (okay, okay..that generally means the meals come with fries) or limit it to ice cream as we know that is a Goldwingers main food staple. But if you ride, we know you love to eat, so join us for dinner.

STAFF MEETING

STAFF MEETING are held once a month on second Wednesday after the meeting. See this month calendar to see where it will be. Everyone is Invited (if you are a WA-B member). We especially welcome new ideas or a volunteer hand. There is always an extra chair!

Other Special Events

Mall Show The First weekend in March (or there about depending on the Easter Bunny’s schedule..can’t believe we lose out to a silly wrabbit!!) is our MALL SHOW at the Kitsap Mall. It is the best time to get the bike out of hibernation, polish up that chrome, and show that puppy off. For many of us, this is the second best thing to riding. We roll out the carpet, add a few lights, bring all thee accessories, and spend the weekend talking to people about what we do and how much we love doing it. As we are somewhat captive to the event (can’t ride when it’s sitting on it’s center stand) the weekend now includes a number of shot seminars such as co-rider course, CPR, Roadside emergency, etc. to help us knock out some of our rider education goals!!! You will have a great time. We open the event to other chapter and other groups, a gap feat is guaranteed. Everyone is invited and needed. Even if you don’t show your bike, we need volunteers to blow up balloons and pass out information about the Governor’s Run…which brings us to the next special event to discuss. It’s been a couple years but we will have it again soon.

GOVERNOR”S RUN The first weekend in May is, by far, the event of the year. The Bob Merriman Memorial Washington GOVERNOR”S RUN. This two-day event has become the largest rally/event in the Northwest with over 1,500 attendees-some of us believe only second to WING DING!!! The event was founded in 1983 as the “Bremerton Run”. It was proclaimed “Washington Governor’s Run” in 1985 by then Governor Booth Gardner due to its huge success and growth as a charity event. In 1998 the event was renamed “Bob Merriman Memorial Washington GOVERNOR”S RUN” in honor of Bob Merriman the founder of chapter B and the Run who passed away in August of 1997. The proceeds from the event are donated to the infants and toddlers program of Holly Ridge Center, Inc. of Kitsap County, a learning and assistance program for developmentally disabled children. Our total contribution over the 24 years exceed of $250,000 with 2005’s donation of $20,000 being the largest.

The Governor’s Run is sponsored by international, national, and local businesses. The event is held at the Kitsap Pavilion on the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton, Washington and is open to all motorcycle organizations, clubs, and associations. During the two-day event, we offer a variety of actives: vendors, programs/entertainment, motorcycle skill games, people games, show & shine for the bikes, a light parade, scenic rides, drill teams, and of course, a chance to win a brand New motorcycle! No other chapter has been authorized by GWRRA to host such a function and award such a prize. In order to host such an event, we relay heavily on all our Chapter members to work the event-but needless to say we have a blast. WE enjoy the fact that the success of our rally has allowed us to continue our support to Holly Ridge, but we love offering the best event around!

B & O Campout Over the Labor Day weekend, the B & O campout IS THE PLACE TO “BEEEEE”. After a long year of hard work, Chapter’s B & O combine their efforts to wrap up the summer season in style. The long weekend is spent at the ocean just kicking back and relaxing. Games, contest, camping, howling at the moon, etc. Each Chapter takes a turn over the camp stove preparing a dinner so the weekend is very affordable. In keeping with true “beeeee” tradition however, the weekend is not without a few special quirks. An awards ceremony takes place on Sunday night for all members to make at lease one award for someone in the Chapter…needless to say, it is generally less than serious. Your worst Hawaiian shirt is the required attire for the evening and howling at the moon a tradition. In addition to a number of games and contest, there are awards for the best “ bee” campsite so this is the time to show your “beee” pride. If you camp only once a year… this is the event!!!!

Chapter B’s ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY AND REUNION

The first Saturday in December delivers Chapter B’s ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY AND REUNION which promises a fun evening of socializing, dinner, games, and dancing. We always cater in a meal, warm-up with a few games, and then kick off our shoes and dance, dance, dance… even those with no rhythm can’t help themselves. One of the more special features is our Santa’s workshop, which is a silent auction of Christmas, mostly home made gifts or decorations (and sometimes that includes chrome guys) donated by the Chapter members. As usual, we cannot let a “gathering” go by without a special “beee” event…. So this is the time of year we crown a queen beee who has absolutely no power but has to wear the royal yellow and black cape and silly crown! The event is semi-formal, but nothing to staunchly. How do you find out more about what is going on???

• Read your Newsletter (snail mail to you or on the Web site( http://www.gwrra-wab.org) • Weekly Phone Tree (or weekly e-mail of the Phone Tree) • Go to the WEB SITE (http://www.gwrra-wab.org) check whats going on • Call your Activities Coordinator • Call you Chapter CD or the ACD’s

……but what ever you do, call and get involved!!!!!

RIDE CARDS

With our eye always on the goal of participation, participation, participation, the chapter provides annual RIDE CARDS to each member at the beginning of the year. Not only does the ride card outline most of the events throughout the year, but it could eventually be worth some bucks. Your ride card should be included in this section.. Take it with you to every function and have a Officer initial off on it for attending that event. Then, at the first meeting (excuse me, Chapter Gathering) in January, cough it up, and the individual with the most signatures ( or number of events attended) will receive a $50.00 check. The second highest participant receives a $25.00 check. Take your hunnney with you everywhere you go, “beeeee” the busiest rider in the chapter, and take home some Ice Cream money!!!!!

MEMBERSHIP / SPONSORSHIP

If you haven’t heard it said enough yet, we’ll say it once again… our Chapter is comprised of individuals that enjoy riding and having fun –

but we can’t survive without participation.

Our goal is to develop an organization that is apropos for adults, families, and singles alike. It is our intent to make everyone welcome and excited to beee there. But far too often we take for granted that new members know everything there is about our group and activities, or worse, heard about it to late and couldn’t plan accordingly. Keeping that in mind, we went about taking the first step of creating this book to inform everyone of who we are, what our plans are, what we hope to do, how to get in contact with us, etc.,etc.,etc. but secondly, and perhaps more importantly, we want to be sure your needs are met and you aren’t left with any questions…

Like “how much beee stuff is too much?”(Which of course the answer is …. There is never too much!!!) So… we want to take that extra step and designate a sponsor per say (you know, one of the old codgers that have been here forever, even before a Gold Wing had reverse) for each new member (or couple as it maybe) as a tag team for the first couple months or so.

Will be your sponsor’s responsibility to make sure you know about scheduled events, entice you into attending, worm out of you your desires and expectations so we can develop new activities, etc…. basically do everything necessary to keep you as an active member. They might even call you up if you have been absent from a few meetings just to make sure that you are still riding.

If you are the sponsorette we would like to count on your participation in letting your sponsor know what you are interested in, whether or not we can include you in the phone tree, how often you like to ride, what your expectations are, and basically how things as are going in general. Feel free to ask all the questions you might have; do not hesitate to call them and let them know if you are having a problem. The Chapter is filled with people who have a wide variety of expertise regarding bikes and when we pool our resources there isn’t anything we don’t know a little something about.

MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONNAIRE

Now…something we need from you – besides a commitment to have fun!!! A membership Questionnaire (information Sheet) is included in this packet. We need you to complete the information and return it to the membership coordinator or Chapter Director post haste. This information will get you into the “system” and ensure that you are included on our phone tree, mailing list, training schedules, birthday, etc., etc., etc. Don’t forget to include any comments or ideas that you have. Sounds very much like a poorly written ad, but the better informed we are, the better our program will “beeeee.”

RIDER EDUCATION

Rider Education Levels Program Details

The Rider Education Levels Program has been divided into (4) progressively achievable levels. Both the Rider and the Co-Rider are eligible for, and indeed encouraged to participate in, obtaining each of these

levels.

The program structure is as follows:

Level I Safe Miles (Safety by Commitment) Safety is a state of mind, which can only be attained through total commitment.

Level I is perhaps the most important part of the REP structure. Regardless of your training and skill level, it is basically worthless if you are not committed to utilize your training and skill level to their fullest. The commitment to safe motorcycle operations not only affects you and your Co-Rider, but others who share the road with you. Commitment – the first big step to success

Level II Tour Rider (Safety by Education)

Represents the continuing commitment of the Rider and/or Co-rider to be safer motorcyclists by completing approved motorcycle training at regular intervals in order to build and maintain optimum riding skills and awareness

Level III Certified Tour Rider (Safety by Preparedness) Represents the continuing commitment of the Rider and/or Co-rider to be prepared

in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is achieved by becoming knowledgeable in First Aid and/or CPR through training and by carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times.

Level IV Master Tour Rider (Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness)

It represents the highest level of commitment by the Rider/Co-Rider toward safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is hown by a demonstrated history of safe miles, continuing education and current certification in both First Aid and CPR. These master Tour Riders/Co-Riders are the finest example to everyone of the highest level of commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness.

How do you find out more on Riders Education Program???

• Talk or Call the Chapter Educator • Go online to the GWRRA web site, look under Rider Education, and read the handbook

The application forms for all levels of the

Rider Education Levels Program can be found in the forms section.
