Extravagant (adj.): wasteful spending.  Ex: To pay in high price for the pearl is extravagant for all the  pearl buyers. 2. Ragged (adj.): torn into irregular shapes or pieces.  Ex: Kino will no longer wear his ragged white shirt after he sold his pearl. 3. Vigour (n): great physical or mental strength and energy.  Ex: He set about his task with renewed vigour . 4. Cautioned ( v): to war n or a dvise s omebody that something i s ri sky and dangerous.  Ex: As Kino wanted to leave the village Juan Tomas cautioned Kino. 5. Benign (adj.): having and a kind and gentle d isposition or ap pearance.  Ex: He shook his head in benign amusement. 6. Clamber ( v.): to climb slowly, using yours hands and feet.  Ex: When Kino went to sell the pearl many boys clambered the window in order to see what will happen. 7. Con temptu ous (ad j.) : fee ling, expres sin g, or demons tra ting a str ong disl ike or utter lack of respect for somebody or something.  Ex: The pearl buyer had a sad and contemptuous smile as Kino went in to the shop. 8. Perplexed (adj.): confused and worried by something that you do not understand.  Ex: After heard the pearl buyer said Kino’s face was perplexed. 9. Tremor (n): a sudden and usually brief feeling of excitement, nervousness, or anticipation.  Ex: The dealer felt a little tremor of fear as the people outside didn’t agree with his price. 10. Compar ativ e (adj .): con sid ered rela tive to somet hin g kno wn, ment ion ed, o r expected.  Ex: A thousand pe sos was no t to be thrown away, it wa s comparative wealth to a man who was not wealthy. 11. Disciplined (v): to punish somebody as a way of enforcing obedience.  Ex: The pearl buyers knew they had played too hard; they knew they would be disciplined for their failure. 12. Pig-headed (adj.): stubbornly ad hering to a belief, decision, or co urse of  action.  Ex: Stop being so pig-headed and admit that you were wrong. 13. Defied (v): to challenge or dare somebody to do something.  Ex: Kino defied the pearl buyers and didn’t sell the pearl to those pearl buyers. 14. Slash (n): a long deep cut or wound.  Ex: Kino was attacked and his face has a deep bleeding slash. 15 .
