O’Dea is doing well, very well, evidenced by the continued positive enrollment, selfless donors, and engaged alumni. Our students, staff, faculty, and administrators continue to embrace the principles established by the Christian Brothers while remaining focused on the future of our school. The bridge we are building between our past and future becomes stronger each day. As we work daily to advance our mission of providing young men with a quality Catholic education, we demonstrate this success through our robust enrollment and retention numbers. But it is not only about enrollment. The principles of Character, Faith, and Service remain meaningful and continue to serve as the foundation of O’Dea’s 93-year old legacy. Our dedicated faculty conveys these principles in ways that empower our students to become contributing, thoughtful, and motivated leaders beyond the halls of O’Dea. The bridge to the future is also built through the continued financial support of the O’Dea community, as witnessed by the generous contributions now totaling over $600,000, in support of this summer’s Model Classroom project. This project will allow us to upgrade classrooms and advance our school programming through technology improvements and additions. To help further this effort the newly created position of Director of Educational Technology will coordinate a team of six carefully selected faculty members to serve as lead teachers. This passionate team of educators will serve a two-year term teaching in one of the six Model Classrooms. The team will work to enrich their instructional strategies through a desire to increase technology adoption in their courses while working to support and model these new strategies to other faculty members. As we look ahead to the future, we must also reflect on where we have come as several members of the O’Dea community complete their service to our school. Will Jackson, having concluded his administrative coursework at Seattle University, is pursuing a position with the Seattle Public School District. Frank Lazarek is moving to Reno, Nevada where he will start a new adventure as an administrator and coach at Bishop Monogue Catholic High School. Dedicated Spanish instructor Jose Martin is returning to Eastern Washington to continue his teaching career closer to his family. Larkin Temme will continue her service to the Seattle Archdiocese as Principal of Holy Family Bilingual Catholic School. And Joanne Varney is retiring to travel with her husband, Greg Varney (’80) and embrace the many joys of being a grandparent. Although each will be missed, their positive influence will live on in the thousands of students they taught and families they have served. The service of these staff members, and the thousands of you who support O’Dea, is evidence of the fact that our foundation is stronger than ever, and we have paved our bridge to the future with a caring, generous and passionate school community. House System House Spirit Day Article written by Jacob Cepollina '16 The second annual O’Dea House Spirit Day was a huge success. Continuing with the theme of unity from various house events throughout the year, the student body and faculty came together in a day of fun, bonding, and brotherhood. The day began in the gym for the final house game of the year, volleyball, which the Waterford house won for their third house games victory of the year. Then the rotations began with two houses in the gym, one in the street, and one in the school. In the gym, there was a 3v3 basketball tournament between the two houses. Outside there were inflatables, including a bouncy house, jousting ring, and life-size foosball. The biggest hit of all, however: the dunk tank. Three teachers or faculty members from each house participated. Some of the highlights included Mr. Olinger, who changed into a button up shirt and slacks before being dunked, Mr. Schutte, a popular choice for seniors, and, of course, Dean Magee. While inside the school, students could play video games, board games, and sing karaoke with their house. After two rotations, the entire school met in the parking lot for an hour long catered lunch with burgers, hot dogs, sides, and an ice cream truck. There were two more rotations after lunch before the student body met back in the gym for the final assembly in which the Irish Cup was presented. Before the winner was announced, senior Justin Murphy led the school in a unifying singing of the fight song. After their strong performances in house games and academics, the Waterford house won the Irish Cup for the 2015-2016 school year! Inside the Classroom Computer Science Principles The Computer Science Principles Honors class has been an educational and enjoyable work in progress for its first year. The class originally was set to begin as an AP class, however the Advanced Placement College Board opted not to offer the class until the 2016-2017 school year. As a result, O'Dea honors students have taken a major role in shaping the class to meet the AP guidelines that are anticipated to begin next year. Next year will be the first year that it is offered by the Advanced Placement College Board, which puts O’Dea at the forefront of some innovative AP classwork. Faith & Service Dragonslayer Seattle Walk for Sarcoma On Saturday, April 23 the O’Dea Varsity Baseball team participated in the 12th Annual Dragonslayer Seattle Walk for Sarcoma at Green Lake Park. The walk is held in honor of those who have battled sarcoma, as well as to raise money to fund the programs of the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation. The Baseball Team has participated in this event the last three years, joining Kiyo and Diana Dickerson and their team JD2, in remembrance of their son and our O’Dea Brother Josh, who passed away from rhabdomyosarcoma in July of 2012. This event has been one of great pride and participation by the Varsity Baseball players, to show unity with the family of one of our own. Team JD2 was recognized in the 2015 Dragonslayer Walk with the “Team Spirit” Award, for all the enthusiastic support from our O’Dea Baseball Players. St. Vincent De Paul - Blue Dress Breakfast On May 9th St. Vincent De Paul put on a clever fundraiser, the Blue Dress Breakfast. This fashion show breakfast was designed to raise funds for SVDP’s many wonderful programs. It was highly anticipated by our O’Dea gentlemen who volunteered to showcase the second hand clothing from St. Vincent De Paul’s thrift stores and strut their stuff down the runway. Joined by Holy Names and staff from the thrift stores themselves, our boys put on quite the show, eliciting laughter and applause all around. A highlight for the crowd came when Russel Wealdon came down the runway sporting a fanny pack, which to everyone’s surprise had been filled with water bottles that he began to hand out to the ladies as he traveled down the aisle. In all, the spirited antics of our O’Dea students helped make this event enjoyable and memorable. We look forward to participating for years to come. Student Life Freshman Jackson Allison: "House Dean for a Day" At this year’s POSH auction, a new auction item debuted: “House Dean for a Day.” Limerick freshman house captain Jackson Allison’s family came out as the top bidder, meaning Jackson was named the first “House Dean for a Day.” In that role, he designated Northwest Harvest (Washington’s only statewide food bank, and the Limerick service partner) as the beneficiary for the May “Relaxed Dress Day,” and even hand-delivered the check to a development official when he volunteered there with his Limerick classmates. “I loved seeing the look on her face,” Jackson said. Jackson was also able to choose two mentor groups – Team Lara v. Team Doyle – for a dodgeball challenge, with the winning group enjoying a pizza party, courtesy of the Wiley family. To round out the experience, Jackson proclaimed a free Limerick Pride Relaxed Dress Day on Friday, May 27, which was a fun way for all the Limerick gentlemen to end the week. “Overall, being House Dean was a great experience for me – a fun and worthy item,” Jackson said. Thanks to all involved in supporting this auction item and making this happen – look for this item to return during O’Dea’s POSH Auction 2017! Message from the Principal “How is O’Dea doing?” is the question I hear time and again from alumni, donors, and former O’Dea parents. O’Dea is doing well, very well, evidenced by thecontinued positive enrollment, selfless donors, and engaged alumni. Our students, staff, faculty, and administrators continue to embrace the principles established bythe Christian Brothers while remaining focused on the future of our school.

The bridge we are building between our past and future becomes stronger each day.As we work daily to advance our mission of providing young men with a qualityCatholic education, we demonstrate this success through our robust enrollment andretention numbers. But it is not only about enrollment. The principles of Character,Faith, and Service remain meaningful and continue to serve as the foundation ofO’Dea’s 93-year old legacy. Our dedicated faculty conveys these principles in waysthat empower our students to become contributing, thoughtful, and motivated leadersbeyond the halls of O’Dea.

The bridge to the future is also built through the continued financial support of theO’Dea community, as witnessed by the generous contributions now totaling over$600,000, in support of this summer’s Model Classroom project. This project willallow us to upgrade classrooms and advance our school programming throughtechnology improvements and additions. To help further this effort the newly createdposition of Director of Educational Technology will coordinate a team of six carefullyselected faculty members to serve as lead teachers. This passionate team ofeducators will serve a two-year term teaching in one of the six Model Classrooms. The team will work to enrich their instructional strategies through a desire to increasetechnology adoption in their courses while working to support and model these newstrategies to other faculty members.

As we look ahead to the future, we must also reflect on where we have come asseveral members of the O’Dea community complete their service to our school. WillJackson, having concluded his administrative coursework at Seattle University, ispursuing a position with the Seattle Public School District. Frank Lazarek is movingto Reno, Nevada where he will start a new adventure as an administrator and coachat Bishop Monogue Catholic High School. Dedicated Spanish instructor Jose Martinis returning to Eastern Washington to continue his teaching career closer to hisfamily. And Joanne Varney is retiring totravel with her husband, Greg Varney (’80) and embrace the many joys of being agrandparent. Although each will be missed, their positive influence will live on in thethousands of students they taught and families they have served.

The service of these staff members, and the thousands of you who support O’Dea, isevidence of the fact that our foundation is stronger than ever, and we have paved ourbridge to the future with a caring, generous and passionate school community.
