YRDSB Survey for Parents/Guardians
Parents/guardians are invited to participate in a survey before May 19. This survey pro-vides an important opportunity for parent/guardian voice. Results will be used to guide planning to support student achievement and well-being.
The English version of the survey is available online. Paper surveys are available in English, Simplified Chi-nese, Traditional Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hebrew, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Sri Lankan Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese. Please contact the school to request a paper copy.
We value your input and encourage you to complete the survey. The information you provide will be anony-mous, considered confidential and kept in strict accordance with all relevant legislation. Please contact the school if you have any questions. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/yrdsb2017ParentSurvey
From SHSM:
Grade 10 students entering grade 11 (or qualified grade 11 students entering grade 12) interested in par-ticipating in the SHSM program (they must take co-op in either grade 11 or 12) should register for the pro-gram using bit.ly/YRDSBSHSMapp . Students must sign into their GAPPS account, enter the link in the search field and complete the application. Once completed, they will receive a completed PDF in their email. They need to print it and have a parent/guardian sign it before submitting it to guidance. There are many opportunities to receive free training and other experiences while in the SHSM program. Students benefit from these opportunities in both grade 11 and 12 even if they only take co-op in one of these grades. For additional information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. Weinstein. Also, a reminder for all new (or returning SHSM students) that the RSVP for the May 25 SHSM breakfast is fast approaching.

Senior Team A with Marwa S., Sejal M., Chawthri K., Daniel M. and Enoch W. for winning the gold medal in Physics and placing 2nd place for all 3 science competitions: biology, chemistry and physics.
In addition, with the combined scores of all 4 teams, we took home the 1st place Physics Tro-phy. And out of the 18 YRDSB high schools that competed in the Science Olympics, we placed 2nd overall. On behalf of the Science Department, we would like to congratulate all our com-petitors for their hard work, perseverance and dedication to Science. We are very proud! A special Thanks goes to Ms. Ting for all her hard work with helping preparing our students for this competition!
YORK REGION SCIENCE FAIR…we’re going to the Nationals! In April, two of our MDHS students competed at the YRDSB Science and Technology Fair that was held at York University. The science department would like to congratulate Christina M. who won the silver medal for her project on “The Minimal Genome Project - Mycoplasma La-boratorium”. Christina also won the peer’s favourite award and a University Entrance Schol-arship.
We’d also like to congratulate Hareshan S., who won a gold medal for his project on “A New
Vision for Diabetic Patients”. Hareshan will be moving on in the Canada Wide Science Fair
that will take place in Saskatchewan next week from May 15-20th. We would like to congratu-
late both candidates for representing MDHS well and we would like to wish Hareshan Good
Luck as he proceeds to the National Science Fair competition.
For anyone who is interested in competing at the YRDSB Science Fair 2018 next year, please
contact Ms. Ho in the Science Department for further information.
REPTILIA Comes to Markham… As part of our Gr. 10 Biology Unit, our students study the different tissues, organs and organ systems of various animals. To enhance our curriculum by providing some hands-on experience, we invited Reptilia to MDHS. Reptilia provides education and conservation programing to students of all ages. It was a very exciting and engaging opportunity for our Gr. 10’s to learn more about the body systems of our snakes, turtles and crocodiles. We hope to invite Reptilia back again next year!
RELEASE of the Salmon! As part of our Gr. 9 Biology Unit, our students are studying about the Conservation Efforts to help repair damaged ecosystems. On May 19th, some of our Gr. 9 classes will be visiting Greenwood Conservation Area in Ajax to release our salmon fry back into Duffins Creek and to receive some Environmental Education. This is our first batch of salmon fry to be released by our students and their teachers! A special thanks goes to Mrs. Healy for all her hard work with organizing this day and caring for our fish.
