“Charity Challenge organized and led thewhole K ilimanjaro climb with greatprofessionalism and made the almostimpossible, totally achievable.” Gary Barlow

For more than a decade now, Charity Challenge has helped thousands of people like you to trek, climb, cycle and ski throughout the world on adventurous challenges, raising in excess of $50m for over 1300registered charities.

The funds raised have helped to change the world one step at a time, from funding research to find a curefor cancer, to providing access to clean sources of water for communities in developing countries. Youhave, and will continue, to make a real difference.

In 2012 we launched a new operation out of Toronto, Canada to offer a similar range of challenges to theCanadian public, in order to raise vital funds for Canadian charities.

You will find a massive array of exciting and inspiring adventure challenges within the pages of thisbrochure from trekking on the Great Wall of China, hiking up to the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru, orsummiting the highest freestanding mountain in the world - Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

You can cycle past Aztec ruins in Mexico, cross Cuba from Havana to Trinidad on two wheels, or ride fromthe Taj Mahal in India through colourful Rajasthan.

We are continuously improving both our range of challenges and the levels of support and service weprovide before and during your challenge.

Our portfolio of challenges continues to grow and we recently introduced a new “snow and ice” series ofchallenges including skiing and sledge hauling to the Geographic North and South Poles.

Whether you are a charity looking for a challenge to raise funds for your cause, an adventurer looking for away to lose weight and get fit, or a corporate looking to engage your employees, we have dozens ofadventurous itineraries to excite and inspire.

Whatever you r dream, whatever you r motivation,

you are guaranteed to find some inspiration

within the pages of this brochure.

We aim to set responsibletourism standards within thetravel industry and to minimizethe impact of our challenges onthe environment within whichwe operate.

We ensure that every challenge we runbenefits both the charity being supported, andalso the local communities with whom weinteract along the way. The social, economicand environmental impact of our challenges isconsidered at all stages of the planningprocess. Our responsible tourism policycovers not only our operations overseas, butour UK and Canadian representatives’ officesas well. We take pride in advising travellershow they can minimize their impact on theenvironment and benefit the host communitiesas much as possible.

support for local projectsAs part of our commitment to the localcommunities we meet with during ourchallenges, we donate approx US$500 pergroup to a local community project which wethink will enrich the quality of life in the areaswe travel through. Examples of the projectswe are funding include the following:

Thailand: Mr Heri’s Projects were set up by agroup of local & foreign volunteers and aremanaged by Mr Heri, the local priest. Theybenefit all the locally run charities, orphanages and education centres in thearea. The individual projects were set up toteach local children the importance ofeducation and to protect them from childlabour, prostitution and trafficking and tomake improvements to local education, hygiene and personal development. On ourThailand Jungle Challenge you may havetime to visit Peak Sneang, an impoverishedcommunity where approximately 500 childrenenjoy the goodwill of the project.

Tanzania: Tanzania is a beautiful country withwarm and welcoming people and anexcellent tourism infrastructure. Yet poorschool facilities, HIV/Aids, and unemploymentblight the lives of many Tanzanians. Over thelast 8 years, Charity Challenge hascontributed towards the vital work ofCommunity Projects Africa in Tanzania byfunding school building projects, providing

educational bursaries and giving vocationaltraining to Tanzanians (especially women)affected by HIV/Aids. We have also organisedthree community challenges where our clientshave travelled to Tanzania to get directlyinvolved in the building of the schools wehave helped to fund.

local community supportWe employ local guides, porters and otheressential support staff to help give support tothe rural areas where our challenges takeplace, and we try, where possible, to uselocally owned accommodation. This way, challenge costs can truly benefit the localcommunity. We also hope to improve the livesof some of the communities we work withthrough our donations whichgo to the International PorterProtection Group (IPPG) forsome of our India and Nepalchallenges. They give freeworkshops to help improve health and safety

for porters working in the mountains and forthe trekking industry worldwide. From theirwork they hope to eradicate avoidable illness, injury and death. They do this by raisingawareness of the issues among travelcompanies, guides, trek leaders, sirdars(porters’ foremen), and trekkers. SinceIPPG’s inception in 1997 there have beenpositive changes. Aid posts and hospitalsreport that most sick porters are nowaccompanied by a trekker, sirdar or groupleader instead of coming in alone. CharityChallenge ensures that the best practiceguidelines set by the IPPG are closelyadhered to

sustainable developmentA leading UK government body responsiblefor sustainable development commendedCharity Challenge for its thorough andcommitted understanding of all aspects ofsustainable development. It added: “It isclear that sustainable development is at theheart of the business. In this rapidlyexpanding market, it represents outstandingperformance and is an example to others.”

air travel and climate changeTourism is the single biggest service industryin the world(1). It accounts for 10.4% percentof the world GDP and 8.2% of totalemployment worldwide which is equal to231.2 million jobs(2). For many developingcountries, tourism is one of the main sourcesof foreign exchange(3). Therefore, reducingtravel to these countries is not a long termsolution to climate change. Any potentialsolution to global warming comes at a cost;investment in renewable energy, cleanertechnologies, waste reduction processes, and so on.

We believe that the solution lies in bothraising awareness of the impact travel canhave on the world climate, and addressingthe ways in which we operate our challenges. We are also raising awareness of carbonfootprint issues with our overseas agents andpartners. Working with ClimateCare we offsetthe long haul flights undertaken by everyclient and member of staff who travelsthrough the company. Through the offsetting,we are funding projects in renewable energyand energy efficiency which fight climatechange and benefitcommunities around the world.

room for improvementWe are supporters of Tourism Concern, the International Porters ProtectionGroup, members of InternationalMountain Explorers Connectionand the Rainforest Alliance.

We are constantly looking for ways toimprove our operations to further benefit thelocal communities in which we operate. Assuch, we welcome your thoughts on anyways you feel we can improve ourresponsible tourism practices.

Charity Challenge and the Rainforest Alliancehave established an alliance to support BestManagement Practices in SustainableTourism. The Rainforest Alliance works toconserve biodiversity and protect livelihoodsby transforming land-use practices, businesspractices and consumer behaviour. CharityChallenge currently work with partners inEcuador and Peru that follow the RainforestAlliance’s Best Management Practices.

Charity Challenge fundingIn general, there are two ways in which you canfund a challenge; however some challengesmay only offer one of these options:

self funderWith the self funder option, you personallycover the full cost of the challenge andcommit to raise as much sponsorship as youcan for the charity. There is generally a $500minimum sponsorship requirement, but eachchallenge may differ. You will be givenfundraising support to help you achieve yourgoal. The full cost is made up of the deposit(typically $1000) which is due at the time ofbooking and the final balance which is dueeight weeks before departure.

flexiWith the flexi payment option, you pay yourdeposit when booking the challenge and makea further contribution towards challenge costs(the balance) eight weeks prior to departure. You also have to raise a minimum amount ofsponsorship for your charity. You will need tosend your sponsorship money to the charity asyou raise it. At least 80% of the minimumsponsorship required must be sent to thecharity ten weeks before departure, and theremaining 20% within four weeks of completingthe challenge.

If you have raised the necessary funds, thecharity will then pay the balance of yourexpedition costs (which will not exceed 25% ofthe minimum sponsorship target). The charitybenefits by keeping the remaining sponsorshipmoney (at least 75% of the minimumsponsorship) and every dollar over and abovethat you raise.

For example, if the cost of the challenge is$3,000, you pay the deposit at the time ofbooking the challenge ($1,000), and commit toraise a minimum sponsorship in aid of thecharity ($4,000). You must send 80% of theminimum sponsorship to the charity ten weeksbefore departure (which equates to $3,200). Atthis time, we will invoice you for your secondcontribution towards challenge costs (a further

$1,000) and will invoice the charity for theremaining amount ($1,000). You will then haveto send any remaining sponsorship money tothe charity within four weeks of completing thechallenge. The charity typically keeps about$3,000 of the minimum sponsorship and everydollar over and above that you raise.

small group supplementsPlease note that the costs and sponsorshiplevels listed on our website are based on aminimum number of participants (typically16-25) taking part on the challenge. We canrun most challenges with less than theminimum (typically 10-15 people), but there willbe a small group supplement. This is payableby your charity if you book under the flexioption, and by you if you are a self-funder. If asmall group supplement is necessary, we aimto notify you 12 weeks before departure.

deposit paymentsOn most challenges, you may at the time ofbooking, choose to pay your deposit in twoinstallments. This option is available only ifbooking online more than five months beforedeparture and paying by debit or credit card.Your card details will be securely stored andthe second deposit instalment will automaticallybe debited from the same credit/debit card 31days after the first installment is paid. Normalcancellation charges apply if you cancel yourbooking within the 31 days, prior to the secondinstallment being taken.

how hard are the challenges? We will try to provide you with an incredibleexperience and a good reason to get intoshape, but the overriding objective of ourchallenges is for you to raise as much moneyas you possibly can for the charity. With thisin mind, you have to earn your sponsorshipmoney, so whichever trip you choose, you willfind an element of challenge waiting for you.How difficult you want the challenge to be isup to you.

Please choose something that is outside ofyour comfort zone as the more you pushyourself, the more you will feel rewarded uponthe completion of your challenge.

The following grading system will give you anidea of how difficult the challenges are.

Further details of terrain, altitude, facilitiesavailable and hours of activity each day canbe found on the relevant itinerary on ourwebsite.

challengingDo not be fooled by the fact that this is thelowest grade of difficulty. Challengingexpeditions require you to have a reasonablelevel of fitness and an open mind to deal withnew situations. They are not typically at highaltitude, and usually last between 6 and 12days. A typical day would involve 5 to 7 hoursof activity. The trails are less remote andalthough still basic, the facilities are slightlymore comfortable. You will be expected tocarry a daypack of about 5kgs.

toughTough itineraries are generally at highaltitude, and may take place in more remoteareas where there are limited facilitiesavailable. Due to the nature of high altitudeexpeditions, the itineraries are normallylonger (typically between 10 and 12 days),allowing you time to acclimatize. The terrainis likely to be hard going and a good level offitness is required. A typical day wouldinvolve 6 to 8 hours of activity inunpredictable weather conditions, and youwill have to carry a daypack of about 7kgs.

extremeChallenges that are graded extreme normallylast for between 11 and 18 days, and requirea very good level of fitness and a morefocused training program to enable you toundertake the challenge. All extremechallenges involve camping in a remotemountain environment where facilities arevery basic and the unpredictability ofmountain or Arctic weather can often providenumerous unexpected challenges of theirown. The terrain will be hard going, withsteep climbs and descents. A typical daywould involve 6 to 8 hours of activity, but asummit day could involve up to 15 hours ofactivity. You will have to carry a daypack ofabout 7kgs.

destinations

Note: Most tough and extreme challenges takeplace at high altitudes (above 3,000m) wherethere is a risk of you being affected by AcuteMountain Sickness (AMS). Exercise at highaltitude can put considerable pressure on thebody, as the air is much thinner than at sea level. As a result, if you have any heart or respiratoryproblems or high blood pressure, you shouldseek medical advice before applying for a toughor extreme challenge.

We are a corporationformed under the laws of England and Wales(Company No. 03786692), carrying onbusiness as a tour operator in the UnitedKingdom and we also hold a licence under theOntario Extra-Provincial Corporations Act(Corporation No. 1861783).

what financial protection do youprovide? We are registered as a travel retailer under theTravel Industry Act, 2002 (Ontario, Canada),under TICO registration number 50019639and, accordingly, the Ontario Travel IndustryCompensation Fund will provide full or partialreimbursement of monies paid to us for travelservices that are not provided due to thebankruptcy or insolvency of Charity Challengeor an end supplier airline, where areimbursement has not otherwise beenprovided, as long as the claim meets certainrequirements set forth in Ontario Regulation26/05 made under the Travel Industry Act,2002. For further information please go tohttp://www.tico.ca/consumer-info/compensation-fund.html.

which charity can I support?Raising sponsorship requires commitment andenergy, so you need to be passionate aboutthe cause you support. You can support anyCanadian charity as long as you have theirpermission.

who leads the challenges? Our groups are led by first aid trained,English-speaking expedition leaders, and asupport team of assistant guides, porters, cooks, camp hands and so on (depending onthe challenge location). Virtually all staff isemployed locally in the host country.

who takes part?Participants must be at or over the applicableage of majority according to the laws of theirhome jurisdiction (country, province, state orterritory, as applicable) on the challengedeparture date, and be in suitable physical

condition to undertake the challenge as set outin the itinerary. Participants should be fullyaware of the possible risks inherent inadventure travel. Minor participants who are atleast 15 years old may also participate inchallenges, with the written agreement of, andwhen accompanied on the challenge by, aparent or guardian who is of legal age. Ourmost mature clients were a 75-year-old manwho successfully completed the RajasthanTiger Bike Ride in India and a 72-year-old manwho successfully reached the summit ofKilimanjaro! You will need to be relatively fit, should have an active sense of adventure, bewilling to muck in, and have a positive andflexible approach to adventure travel.

how do I convince sponsors thatthis is not a holiday? You will need to spend months training andfundraising before undertaking a demandingphysical challenge. During your challenge youwill be exerting yourself for 6-8 hours each dayfor several days, with basic facilities andsometimes in extreme weather and at highaltitude. Temperatures could drop from +30°Cto -20°C within 24 hours. Participating in one ofour challenges starts long before you depart. Ittakes time, effort, and dedication and is farfrom a holiday. Remember that the more youstep outside of your comfort zone, the morelikely people are to sponsor you.

do I need travel insurance? It is a condition of booking that you obtain asuitable travel insurance policy to cover you forthe challenge, with a minimum medical(emergency, evacuation and repatriation)coverage of $200,000. You must also ensurethat any policy purchased covers you for theadventurous activities you will be undertakingon your Challenge (as well as the heightscovered at altitude if applicable). It is stronglyrecommended that the coverage be extendedto include cancellation, curtailment, and allother expenses that might arise as a result ofloss, damage, injury, delay or inconvenienceoccurring to you or your baggage.

how fit do I need to be?The very nature of the challenges means acertain level of fitness is required. Ourexpeditions are designed to be demanding, asyou need to earn your sponsorship money, sogetting fit is all part of the challenge. We willprovide you with a training schedule and fitnesstraining notes.

what should I expect? Many of the host countries where ourchallenges take place are less developed thanNorth America. Internal infrastructures are oftenlimited; roads are rough and facilities basic. Wemaintain the highest standards of hygiene (that awilderness environment permits), but if you’reafter a five-star holiday, forget Charity Challenge. If, however, you are seeking an excitingadventure abroad, with a group of like-mindedindividuals, then we have plenty to offer you.

am I liable for any additional costs? The faqs for each challenge detail exactly whatis and what is not included in the cost of thechallenge. The only exception to this has beendue to increased costs of oil (which led to fuelsurcharges being imposed by the airlines) andthe performance of the CAD against the USD(which has led to currency surcharges). We aimto forward-buy relevant currency to cover ourrequirements and minimize any negativeimpact on our pricing. In all cases, we arecontractually obliged to absorb an equivalent to2% of the cost of the challenge before passingon any surcharges. Please refer to the pricingclause in the booking conditions.

what next?Once you have decided to take up thechallenge, please turn to page 35 for details onhow to book your place.

Most participants tend to join achallenge individually or with afriend or two. However agrowing number of ourchallenges now run exclusivelyfor private groups.

We regularly work withcorporate clients, organizingexclusive groups to engagestaff, encourage team-buildingand generate good PR.

Equally, we are happy toorganize an exclusive itineraryfor groups of friends, relativesor colleagues.

Here are some reasons that people give forwanting to organize an exclusive group:

• Improve morale amongst staff

• Teambuilding/personal development

• To celebrate a big birthday (40th, 50th or 60th)

• To come to terms with a difficult life event(divorce, bereavement, children leavinghome)

• To meet like-minded people (singles,divorcees, etc)

• To fulfill a new year’s resolution, like losingweight or getting fit

• To experience new cultures

• To support the charity of their choice

A group usually starts off as the brainchild ofone adventurous person who wants toundertake a challenge. If you have thepersuasive powers to encourage others, wecan organize a private group for you. We willhandle all of the administration, support youwith marketing materials, and deal withqueries from participants about thechallenge. We can provide posters, films, slide shows, e-newsletters and even givewebinars to interested people. All you willhave to do is convince more participants tojoin you on the challenge. Most groupsrequire a minimum of about 12-16 people, but if you have any questions, please call ourCanada agents on +1 289 239 8239 or theUK head office us on +44 (0)20 8557 0000,or email us at [email protected].

north pole challenge norway/arctic ocean

Take part in this once in a lifetime trip to the North Pole! In 1909 Robert Peary, his partner Matthew Henson, and four Inuit reached the North Pole. They wererecognized as the first, although there is still controversy surrounding this claim,as some believe the men missed the North Pole by several miles. Followingmany further failed expeditions, by sled, balloon, airship and ship, the Pole wasnext witnessed in 1926, but it was 1948 before anyone actually stood there.

Travelling across the dynamic polar ice in temperatures that often fall below-35º, requires patience, determination and physical fitness, not to mention aflexible attitude to deal with the many obstacles that may crop up over thecourse of each day, and which make reaching the North Pole all the moresatisfying.

You will ski and haul your sledge for around 8 hours per day for up to 8 days, inthe process encountering many challenges and breathtaking scenery.

The community challenge programwas set up in response to the Asiantsumani in 2004. Individuals andcompanies wanted to do more thanprovide just money. They wanted to getphysically involved in rebuilding thehomes and lives of the communitiesmost affected.

Our community challenges involve youtravelling to a developing countrytypically for one working week, andgetting directly involved in providingassistance to communities in need, whilst raising vital funds for charity.

By taking part in a communitychallenge, you will be helping toprovide positive solutions to some ofthe most pressing developmentalglobal issues such as education, healthand sanitation, water, poverty housing, and HIV/AIDS.

You could be building schools, classrooms, health or communitycentres, or installing hand hygienestations, latrines or other life-savinginfrastructure.

During the challenge, individuals workalongside the local community, sharingthe same life changing goals. Essentialtasks that you could be involved withinclude clearing and levelling a site, digging foundations, mixing concrete, moving and laying materials for wallsand roofs through to planting treesand, just as importantly, integrating andexchanging ideas and laughter with thelocal community.
