If you think fundraising is just aboutstanding in the street and asking, thinkagain. It is co-ordinating national onlinecampaigns, negotiating with leading thinkersand strategists, organising marathons andgalas, managing big budgets and enticingsponsors, rubbing shoulders with the richand famous, understanding psychology,creating fun, inspiring and leadingvolunteers, being innovative, making therules, and inspiring millions of people togive. It can take you to the rainforests ofBorneo or the halls of Westminster andhundreds of inspiring places in between.

There is only one place in the UK whereyou can take an undergraduate degree infundraising, it’s the University of Chichester.

The Course

Be inspired by lecturers whobring their own first-handexperience of working withcharities.

Our course leaders are drawn from theprofession. We also invite a regularprogramme of leading industry guestspeakers, so you are always learning fromthe cutting edge of fundraising, vital in aprofession that doesn’t stand still. You’ll alsohave opportunities to attend industryconferences exploring live issues, learningand networking with fundraisers.

We teach in small groups of up to 25students. Each module is normally supportedby a weekly workshop of 2.5 to 3 hours. Inaddition there are regular one-to-one andgroup tutorials, alongside your own self-guided study. Our emphasis is on thedevelopment of problem-solving, analysis,self-management, and interpersonal skills.

We want to give you the confidence todream, to try and to fail, because withoutthis life can be limited to what you know andwhat feels safe. It’s this spirit of adventurethat drives the charitable sector forward.

The Charity Development degree is anintegral part of our School of Enterprise,Management and Leadership (SEMAL),which makes our course flexible and allowsyou to tailor the content to suit yourinterests. You’ll soon discover the skills youlearn are highly transferable.

Some of the modules you might take, willinclude:

The Third SectorThere are over 164,000 registered charitiesin the UK, some with a multi-millionturnover, others managing on a few poundsa week. Community Interest Companiesrepresent an emerging trend for companiesto make social benefit central to the workthey do. From the arts to zoos, you’ll beamazed at what happens in the third sector.For those in desperate need the third-sectoris often their champion, offering care andassistance when there is nowhere else toturn. Your role will be vital in the success ofthe third sector so understanding how itworks is essential.

Fundraising Then and NowFundraising has a recorded history stretchingback to before the middle-ages. Someapproaches remain fundamentally the same,the appeal letter, while others reflect theradical changes in the way we live today,online campaigns. The reasons why, and theway we give, are a fascinating record of howsocieties have changed, religions haveevolved and the politics of the day haveaffected the private behaviour of individualsfor generations. Understanding the differentmotivations for giving across different social,economic and cultural backgrounds will helpyou decide the best way to ask for supporttoday. Understanding the many ways peoplegive will help you find your niche in thismulti-faceted career.

Event Planning design and creation What makes a great event, one that willinspire people to support an organisationlong after the twitter posts and SMSmessages have faded into history? How canyou plan an event that will help raise theprofile and funding your organisation needs?This module looks at all the basics you needto know, from marketing to catering, safetyto scene-setting and choosing a venue. Getyour wellies on, don those high-heels, it’stime to get very serious about parties.

Grant-giving TrustsThe top 100 family foundations in the UKgive over £900 million each year, while thetop 100 in the US give over three time thisamount. The majority of grant giving bodieswere established by wealthy individuals, butsome are the result of a group of visionaries,such as Comic Relief, Children in Need andthe many Lottery bodies. Grants from trustsand foundations usually provide the coreincome for charities while new loan fundshelp the emerging body of social enterprisesthat meet the needs of people and planet.This module will help to find and accessfunding and loans from these donors foryour cause.

Major Donor FundraisingMajor donors are individuals that make alarge personal donation. In the UK many ofthe largest gifts (over £1 million) go to highereducation institutions and foundations, butjust over 20 per cent reach UK charities.You’ll learn how to capture the hearts andminds of some of the world’s wealthiestpeople, inspiring them to support the causesyou care for. This module will help you gainthe strategic know-how to achieve your goal,exploring people skills, high-level events andnetworking.

Community and EventsFundraisingEver considered running three marathons ina row, or abseiling across a football pitch?Relax, your job will be to inspire others todo the daring do. Whether your style is tolead by example or keep your feet firmly onthe ground, it’s vital you know whatmotivates people to go to the lengths theydo to support the causes they love. Learnhow to engage and retain volunteers.

Project Management History is littered with great ideas that nevermade it, but your history doesn’t need to be.Great project management isn’t just aboutbuilding bridges or digging tunnels, theseskills will help you achieve more in yourprofessional and personal life. This modulelooks at the classic PRINCE II methodologyand a range of tools. Find the right methodsand tools for you, learn how to use themand turn your idea into reality.

Experience in theworkplaceWe believe that completingacademic assignments, self-guided studies and taughtsessions will bring you closer toyour goal of being aprofessional fundraiser, butbeing part of a professionalteam that is actually making adifference will inspire you toexceed your expectations.

Our internship programme is notcompulsory but we really encourage andsupport you in finding an opportunity thatoffers new perspectives. We are constantlybuilding our list of charity partners so thatyou can find opportunities that match yourinterests.

You will be free to dedicate one day of eachweek during the semesters of years one andtwo to your internship or another ‘learningthrough doing’ activity. We will encourageyou to work with at least three differentorganisations over the course of yourdegree.

By the first semester of year-three your aimis to find an organisation willing to help youprepare a fundraising strategy, taking up 50per cent of your study time. In the secondsemester you will be able to identify anelement of that strategy to implement forreal, working directly with your hostorganisation and with our support. However, you may find that you haveidentified a project that inspires you and isindependent of a specific charity. If you do,we will support you in developing a robuststrategy which you can deliver,demonstrating your ability to think creatively,plan effectively and deliver results.

The Charity Development BA (Hons) isaccredited by the industry’s leadingprofessional body. As part of your studiesyou will work towards the Institute ofFundraising’s ‘Certificate in Fundraising’,which as a member of the Institute willentitle you to include ‘MIinstF (cert)’ afteryour name, the letters many employers arelooking for.

Next steps

All our applicants areinterviewed; it’s animportant opportunity foryou to find out more aboutthe next stage in your life.

When you arrive you will be with asmall group of applicants and we startwith a relaxed opportunity to see somefootage about the third-sector. So ifyour train/bus/traffic-jam is runninglate don’t panic! our reception teamwill guide you to your seat.

We will give you a taste of what thenext three years might have in storeand an idea about the many careerroutes that your course might take youdown. You’ll have a chance to askquestions (bring notes and we’ll do ourbest to answer).

Then it’s your turn to show us yourstrengths by giving a short pre-prepared presentation (details are sentwith the invitation to interview) to anaudience of your fellow applicants.There’s lots of scope to give thepresentation in a way that works foryou. Donna Day Lafferty Co-ordinator, Charity DevelopmentDonna has worked as a professional fundraiserand project manager since 1997. She iscurrently co-ordinating the BA (Hons) CharityDevelopment, which is first undergraduatedegree programme to reflect the wide scope ofthe fundraising role.

She designed and authored thehow2fundrase.org website, an online guide forvolunteer fundraisers for the Institute ofFundraising (IoF), coordinated the IoF’s firstonline learning module, and piloted fundraisingtraining for local charity volunteers for ChichesterDistrict Council (2007-2009). She now deliversas part of a partnership with local CVS officesand the University of Chichester.

She raised over €22 million in pledged andsecured funding as development director of theBetter Cotton Initiative (2010-2012). Asdirector of co-funding for the Tropical ForestTrust (2000-2006), she secured over €14million in funding and managed an internationalproject to help end the trade in illegal timberfrom tropical forests. She secured the WWF’sfirst Comic Relief grant, £600,000, and wastheir millennium campaigns co-ordinator. Shehas experience of working in the disability,environment, international development andarts sectors, and is a trustee of the BetterCotton Initiative-UK.
