Period: November to December 2010

Peduli Merapi

Tuesday morning, November 1, 2010 at 10:04 AM,

Mount (Mt.) Merapi erupted again and spewed a cloud of hot

ash. This was the fourth eruption. The first eruption happened on

the evening of November 26, 2010. It caused 37 deaths who were

struck by the infamous hot cloud called wedhus gembel. The

famous Mt. Merapi guardian, Mbak Maridjan, and VIVAnews

reporter Yuniawan Nugroho were also amongst the victims.

The eruption this year was three times larger than the eruption

that happened in 1997, 2001, and 2006.

Since the government declared this as an

on

October 26, 2010, many of the residents around Mt.

Merapi were evacuated to Safety Zone camps. Due to

the increasingly concerning situation of Mt. Merapi,

the Safety Zone was increased from 5 km to 10 km and

finally 25 km from the top of Mt. Merapi.

Since that point in time, has been

committed to starting fundraising activities and also

directly involved in the refugee camps distributing

donations (material donations) and also providing

treatment to heal children with trauma.

Emergency Response Situation

At that stage of the emergency response, most of the volunteers

were still focused on the victims' evacuation from the most

dangerous area around Mt. Merapi. There was not enough

attention addressed to public kitchens that were supposed to take

care of the evacuated victims (refugees). After observation in a

few areas, hoshiZora decided to distribute 1000 packs of

packaged meals and 1000 instant milks for the

refugees and 50 boxes of multivitamins for the

volunteers.

Even though we calculated that the number of package meals that we distributed would be a quite large donation, we realized that the

number of the packaged meals was not comparable with the number of refugees in Maguwoharjo Stadium, 9536 people. In the process of

preparing the packaged meals we realized that it was quite challenging. Despite assigning our volunteers into 8 different places to do the

packaging, it took the whole day to prepare. The packaged meal distribution was also delayed by difficult weather, and the distribution

finally happened in the evening. We learned that in the future it is important to be more careful in deciding the amount of donations and

take the number of human resources into consideration.

The hoshiZora Community was collaborating with the Forum Anak

DIY (Yogyakarta Province Children Forum) and Lembaga

Perlindungan Anak Provinsi D.I. Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Child

Protection Association) in creating a trauma healing project

in refugee camps.

We spent time and played with children in the refugee camps. We

provided motivational activities that created a positive atmosphere

such as adventurous and unique games. Most of the games that we

introduced to the children needed team work and therefore the

children in the refugee camps were able to get to know each other

and break the ice between them. We also delivered important

knowledge such as their rights as children and information

regarding the child protection law.

Besides the trauma healing projects, was also

distributing donations such as food, milk, clothes,

toys, school equipment and much more.

Our communication with both of the head villages was very effective because they represented their villages' aspirations. In

order to provide the best support, we had Mr. Suwondo and Mr. Jamin arrange the detailed distribution to their villagers.

Evaluation for

The camp was not conducive for us to do our trauma healing activities. There were many different floors where the refugees

were located and children and adults were clustered together so we were not able to get children's attention effectively. Even

though we were using a microphone to communicate with the children, there were too many distractions due to general

announcements that were happening at the same time.
