Committee News

Besides domestic matters, an item that will continue to take up a lot of thecommittee's attention will be ensuring that we are compliant with the newGeneral Data Protection Regulation which will come into effect in May thisyear. One immediate consequence is that the committee has, with regret, come tothe conclusion that we should no longer circulate contact details of othermembers to all members. The Contacts sheet giving information on how tocontact members of the committee, convenors and others with responsibility willcontinue to be distributed to members on email with the Newsletter, and to othermembers on request to the Secretary.

The minutes of Committee meetings are available at the Secretary’s table atmonthly meetings and also on the members’ page of the website.

Message from the ChairI cannot believe we are already into March. Despite the rain and snow, Februaryhas flashed past. I hope that most of you have managed toavoid the very nasty colds and flu that are circulating. Theother day was warmer and very sunny, it made me lookforward to Spring. Already the early flowers are in bud – I'veseen snowdrops and primroses, and the birds are starting tosing again.I hope you all found the February talk on Scams as interestingand informative as I did.We did have some members come forward asking how they could help thecommittee. There is still room for more, so if you are interested in doingsomething please come and talk to us.I look forward to talking to as many of you as possible at the next monthlymeeting.

The brief for this meeting was to choosethree of these and to provide two images illustrating each of the three.Between us all eleven themes were covered and some very intriguing pictureswere produced. The following two collages show a small selection of them. Can you guesswhich of the themes each of them represents? (Answers on page 21)

News from the Groups Co-ordinator

I thought I’d focus this month on how groups get their idea for their activities, that is, how do you decide from meeting to meeting, whatyou’re going to do next? Remember, it’s not down to theConvenor to decide what you do, each member of the groupshould be contributing their ideas toward future planning. Forsome activities, such as the games groups, that’s usually goingto be quite straightforward: you arrive at your host’s house andyou play your chosen game. I’m sure if I’m wrong about that, someone will put me straight! But even then, there may be different rules thatmay apply, or you may want you start a tournament and you’re not sure how togo about organizing it. With most groups, quite a bit of forward planning isneeded. Discussion-type groups need to ensure they’re not covering the sameground, with the same speakers. Languages need to use a variety of activities tomaintain interest, and to ensure that individuals are progressing, not justreinforcing what they already know. So where do groups get their ideas from, orhelp if they need it?

Some groups rely on their ‘expert’ members, and there are lots of themfortunately, who can use their expertise and enthusiasm for their subject area tokeep their group interesting and relevant for all the members. We’re all hugelygrateful for the contributions these expert members make. But there are othersources of help, ideas and information that you could use.

Our own website has a Connections page, which is brimming with links to usefulorganisations and sources of information (https://u3asites.org.uk/leicester/page/60859). Much of this is for our members’ everyday lives, such as Citizens’Advice and The Carers’ Centre. (If you haven’t had a look at it yet, it’s worth afew minutes of your time!) But there are also loads of Leicester-based sources ofuseful information for groups: places to visit, such as art galleries and museums, organisations and societies for history, sciences, the arts, music and philosophy,as well as gardens and events. Links to TED talks and MOOCs (Massive OpenOn-line Courses) are there too, each a huge source of entertainment andeducation for anyone interested.

The Third Age Trust, the governing body of U3As nationally, has a web-site fullof advice and help. From the Home page (https://www.u3a.org.uk), you can findthe Resources tab, and clicking on that will lead you to the on-line version of theSources magazine that is delivered with the TAT magazine. The articles aresubject-based, very variable in length and quality, but you might find somethingof interest for your group there. More specifically aimed at helping groups arethe subject advisers, also found on the Resources tab. Not all subjects are listed,

u3asites.org.uk/leicester 9

Page 10: Charity No: 1083274 u3asites.org.uk/leicester · Links to TED talks and MOOCs (Massive Open On-line Courses) are there too, each a huge source of entertainment and ... why not get

and again, the actual articles there are very varied. But you are able to contact theadvisers directly by email if you have a query, or if you’re after some advice orinspiration.

Lastly, if you feel your group has got a bit ‘same-y’, and you’d like some ideasabout what else you could be doing, why not get in touch with other U3As? Forexample, you might feel your Frog-Breeding group is in a bit of a rut, so GoogleU3A Frog-Breeding groups, and you will get a list of other U3As which havesimilar groups. You may be surprised to find other Frog-Breeding groups inLiverpool, or Southampton! You should easily be able to contact the Convenorsof these other groups and ask them if they have any ideas for activities yourFrog-Breeding group could be doing. I’m confident that most Convenors arevery enthusiastic about their groups and would be only too happy to discussactivities with you, especially if you’re not local to them. One of our buddinggroups is Narrow-Gauge Railways, so to test my own suggestion, I haveGoogled U3A Steam Railways group, and found at least 11 spread throughoutthe UK!

Finally, why not contact other Convenors within Leicester U3A? Groups insimilar subject areas (Arts, Languages etc) may go about things very differently. Why not get together and see if you could share ideas? (Thanks to HenryPaulinski for that suggestion.) Good luck everyone.

Budding Groups –those seeking members in order to start

Walking Football (1st Advert)

It’s the next big thing! Lots of walking football groups are being set upthroughout the country, and not one to be left behind, Leicester U3A arehoping to get one established too. If you loved playing, but find you can onlymanage a brisk walk now, there’s no reason why you can’t continue withyour favourite activity. If you’re interested, do let me know, or put yourname on the sign-up sheet on the Groups table at the monthly meeting.

Discussion 2 (2nd Advert)

The first meetingwill be on March 26th, see the Groups list in the Newsletter for days andtimes etc.

Canasta (2nd Advert)

This group has also been fully established now after only one advert in theNewsletter, but could still benefit from more members. Either way, youwould be most welcome in the Canasta group. For information on days andtimes, see the Groups list in the Newsletter.

History 3 (3rd Advert)

Clearly History is a very popular subject, so much so, that our existing twogroups are unable to accommodate all those who want to join. So if you areone of those who have expressed an interest in joining one of the Historygroups but they haven’t had the space, here’s the group for you. Put yourname on the sign-up sheet at the next monthly meeting, or give me a call/email.

Evening Discussion (3rd Advert)

If you find yourself busy in the daytime, as most retired people do I’vediscovered, and find it difficult to attend meetings in the mornings orafternoons, perhaps an evening meeting would suit you. If you think a bit ofadult conversation would be a relief after dealing with the grandchildren allday, then sign up for the Evening Discussion group.
