BISHOPS LENT APPEAL

EMMS International is delighted to be chosen as the recipient of this year’s Bishop’s Lent Appeal. Our vision is to work to create a just world in which all people have access to good quality and dignified health care. Your gifts will help us ensure people like 14 year old Jeremiah do not suffer pain and isolation whilst their families look helplessly on. Your gifts will help us train and resource palliative care nurses who can travel to visit people in their homes, offering food, pain relief and advice on how to care physically for someone who is ravaged with cancer or other life limiting diseases. An EMMS International representative would be very happy to visit your church and tell you more about our work. Please contact us on [email protected] to arrange this.

Vacancies on the Provincial Committee for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults Vacancies will arise on the Provincial Committee for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults later this summer and we are looking for prospective volunteers to take up these. The work of the Committee oversees and supports the activities of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults which deals with the Church’s responsibilities for safeguarding the vulnerable, including the compliance with relevant legislation, membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme and the suitability of clergy, employees and volunteers to undertake regulated work with children and vulnerable adults. It would be helpful for prospective volunteers to have some knowledge of or a professional background in issues related to safeguarding and protecting the vulnerable or in a related field such as teaching, social work, child psychology or similar but this is not essential. The Committee meets three time a year at the General Synod Office in Edinburgh with occasional meetings arranged when required. Additional contact is by means of telephone or e-mail. Enquiries in this respect should be directed to the Secretary General at the General Synod – [email protected]

If you don’t know what this is – here’s a very brief explanation:

“GDPR is a regulation that requires businesses to protect the personal data and privacy of EU citizens for transactions that

occur within EU member states”. This is being introduced on 25 May 2018 and it will, unfortunately, affect all our congregations. However, you do not need to panic, although there will be some key changes you will need to make, in the way you obtain, use and hold the personal details of the members of your congregation. It is purely an update of the 1998 Data Protection Act, and tightens up the principles of that Act.

The date is fixed, but the Information Commissioner’s Office has said they “expect organisations to work toward compliance”. If you are not fully compliant by the date above, they “expect to see a plan for how it will be achieved within a reasonable time frame after May”.

We have now produced our own initial set of guidance for the Diocesan Office, and we are looking to adapt that for your own use, so we will be sending something out very soon. In the meantime, you may like to have a look at the guidance produced by:

• The Church of England - http://www.parishresources.org.uk/gdpr/ • The Baptist Church -

https://www.baptist.org.uk/Groups/302154/Data_Protection_and.aspx • The Information Commissioner’s Office - https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-

to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/

We hope that helps, and we will be in touch again very soon.

The Holywell Community is a new monastic community based in the thriving market town of Abergavenny. Working with the four diverse Anglican churches in the incumbency, the Community provides an opportunity for young adults exploring their Christian vocation to live, worship and work together for a year at a time. Over a year living together, community members have the chance to explore their own vocations, innovate, and reflect on how God is calling each of us to live our faith.

The principal work of the Holywell Community is to support the outreach and mission work of the Church, and to provide a praying presence in the local community, including keeping four of the monastic Daily Offices. Inspired by the Rule of St Benedict and the monastic heritage of the Priory Church, community members live a modern monastic lifestyle, including cooking, cleaning and studying together. Lay members support a variety of projects across the area, including Bible studies, a toddler group, and a youth drop-in centre, and have the opportunity to run their own projects.

Based in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, with easy access by train to Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury, community members can use their day off to explore the beautiful countryside and enjoy the town, which has a castle, independent cinema and plenty of local history. The Community runs from late August to mid-July each year, with an opportunity for a week’s holiday after Christmas and Easter. Food and accommodation is provided as well as an allowance for basic expenses.

HolyMonday7:30 pm 26 Hilary of Poitiers and

the Transfiguration: A Different PerspectiveJanet Sidaway

Hilary of Poitiers (c. 315-367) is known as a staunch defender of Nicene orthodoxy, based on the Creed of Nicaea of 325, amended in 381 at the Council of Constantinople. His opposition to the Emperor Constantius, who promoted an alternative ‘Arian’ view, led to his exile from Gaul to the Eastern Roman Empire in 356. He spent a fruitful four years learning and responding to the more advanced theological ideas he found there. The talk will show how these ideas related to Hilary's view of the Transfiguration, and then discuss his contribution to the subsequent interpretations of the Transfiguration in Eastern and Western Christianity.

Janet Sidaway, MBA, PhD, is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies. Her book The Human Factor: ‘Deification’ as Transformation in the Theology of Hilary of Poitiers (Studia Patristica Supplement 6), was published in 2016.

HolyTuesday7:30 pm 27 What If? How Science

Fictions Engage the ReligiousJaime Wright

What do heaven and hell have to do with Planet X? Considering films such as Blade Runner, The Matrix, and Avatar, this talk will explore the interaction of science fiction and the religious. Engaging such films, one finds that science fiction lends itself particularly well to asking—and pursuing answers to—questions of religious belief and practice.

Jaime Wright is a doctoral candidate at Edinburgh University’s Divinity School. Her research concerns the use of literary works within the Science-and-Religion field. While she currently works with speculative fiction, she has also worked with poetry. Her article ‘Emily Dickinson: A poet at the limits’ was published in Theology in Scotland in 2017.

HolyWednesday7:30 pm 28 Dali’s ‘Le Christ’

Natalia S Y Fang Brand

Salvador Dalí’s much-loved painting Le Christ (1951) has attracted academic suspicion of its intentions and even physical assaults from members of the public. Dalí’s conversion to Catholicism in 1941 fitted with his break from conventional Surrealism and his siding with Franco in Spain’s civil war. Yet Le Christ gives rise to doubts as to its straightforward religiosity. This talk will focus on Dali’s painting as well as images of crucifixion in Western art history—which will be used to compare and explore symbolism, implications and connotations in the art of Jesus crucified. Finally, we may realise the true nature of Dalí's painting. Is Le Christ religious or sacrilegious?

Natalia S Y Fang Brand, MSc, PhD, is an art historian, literary and art critic, biographer, translator, essayist and poet. She has written numerous articles for newspapers, journals, and magazines as well as catalogues for many artists across the UK, the USA, Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. She also has published thirteen books on art and four collections of poems.

St Andrews The historic University town of St Andrews has much to offer visitors: beautiful buildings, shops and cafes, and wonderful beaches. There are several visitor attractions, including the Sea Life Centre, Golf Museum, East Sands Leisure Centre, Byre Theatre and Castle and Cathedral ruins. The pretty coastal villages of the East Neuk of Fife are just a few miles away.

TransportPublic transport is by bus to St Andrews, or by train to Leuchars Station, approximately 5 miles away, on the main East-Coast line.

AccommodationSt Leonards is a private boarding school, set in 35 acres of ground in the heart of the town, next to the harbour and ancient cathedral. Its pleasant stone buildings are encircled by the walls of the old Abbey, and there are parking facilities in the school grounds. The oldest part of the school dates back to the 15th Century and St Leonard’s Chapel (1512) which we use for Wednesday evening prayers is situated within the grounds.

Bishopshall where we will be accommodated has recently undergone significant internal renovation. While there are now two en-suite bedrooms which are situated on the ground floor, none of the other bedrooms have wash hand basins, but all have been refurnished and there are extended and upgraded toilet, bath and shower facilities on every floor. Bed linen and towels will be provided. There are kitchens on all floors where tea, coffee and biscuits will be freely available. NB Most of the group rooms including the Common Room are on the ground floor. There are no lifts in St Leonards and only a few bedrooms on the ground floor. Please let us know beforehand if you have problems with your mobility and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

The CostThe cost which includes the Conference Fee, Accommodation and Full Board is £465 for BPF members and £480 for non-members.
