CHARITY RETAIL CONFERENCE, EXHIBITION AND AWARDS DINNER 2017 | 3
Charity Retail Conference and Exhibition 2017You are all more than welcome at this year’s Charity Retail Conference, our annual opportunity to celebrate all that is good, exciting and innovative about charity retail and to learn a lot and have a lot of fun besides. We are very excited to at long last be welcoming you to a new venue, and we hope that East Midlands Conference Centre will win the same place in our affections as its predecessor Keele University.
We once again have the huge diversity of participants that characterises this most eclectic of conferences. Whether you are a Head of Retail, an Area Manager, a volunteer, a supplier, or a charity Chief Executive, there is something here for you. A new product perhaps; a new way of thinking about a problem; new friends; new meetings with old friends; a new customer or a new business partner.
It’s been an interesting year for charity retail. The annual Charity Finance survey of charity shops, sponsored by the CRA, gave us all pause for thought as the headline of reduced profitability hit home. And that’s why we are using this conference as an opportunity to examine in depth the issue of volunteering, that crucial resource for charity shops which seems to be in some decline. But that is only one of the many issues which we will look at over the next 30 hours or so, and we are confident that you will emerge from this event with at least some new ideas and wisdom to carry forward to your work.
CRA is just about to publish an updated version of the Demos report on the social impact of charity retailing, called “Shopping for Good”. I would strongly urge you to read this when it is appears soon: it is very informative on why we all do what we do and the huge benefit it can have over and above simply providing finance to our parent charities. This social impact is to be emphasised in many of our presentations and sessions over the next days; it’s one of the most important parts of what charity shops are all about.
The Awards dinner on Monday night is our time to celebrate this, as well as the many other aspects of charity retail, especially the investment in innovation and development. It’s always a great event, and this year will, I’m confident, be no exception.
Of course an undertaking such as the Charity Retail Conference does not happen by itself. I’d like to thank sincerely our many exhibitors and sponsors, without whom this event could not happen at all. And I’d like to put on record my grateful thanks to Julia Cloke and the rest of the small team at CRA whose hard work and dedication always makes our flagship event such a success.
Have a great Conference! Don’t hesitate to say hello to the CRA team – we have our own stand this year! – and don’t hesitate to enjoy yourselves as well as learn. And have a great trading year to come.

The Little Debate:Conversation StationsTaking place from 9.45am to 10.15am on Tuesday morning ‘The Little Debate’ is aimed at encouraging networking amongst our members. The focus is on you to take part, share knowledge amongst your peers and come away with some new ideas.
This is a free form session and you can choose which topic you’re most interested in and sit on that table. Each table will have a facilitator to help lead the conversation.
On Monday there will be poster boards located by the Conference Theatre, with each topic clearly displayed and the number of spaces available on each table listed below. If you would like to take part in that table discussion, you simply take a slip from underneath that heading and present it on Tuesday morning.
The conversation stations will take place in the Atrium and Conference Theatre.
There are 15 topics to choose from:
• Women in Charity Retail: How can the sector support and mentor women to help them reach the goals they want?
• Collaboration: How can we work together to protect retail when the high street is becoming more and more challenging?
• Charity Retail USP: How do you find your Unique Selling Point to stand out from your competitors?
• Media Representation of Charity Retail: How do we respond to the small section of the media who seem to feel that charity retail is too ‘corporate’, whilst ignoring the increased profits this brings to their parent charities?
• Customer Loyalty: How can charity shops develop customer loyalty?
• Politics: What will the impact of the General Election be on the charity retail sector?
• Specialist Shops: Do discount shops really work for charity retail?
• Stock: How do you work your stock harder, and what are the associated benefits & pitfalls of stock rotation?
• Shop Managers: How do you recruit high quality shop managers into charity retail?
• Social Media: How can you make the most of social media to promote charity retail?
• Pop-up Shops: What are the pros and cons of running pop-up shops and how do you go about doing it?
• Gift Aid: How do you increase your gift aid sign ups?
• Volunteers: How can we overcome the challenges of recruiting and attracting volunteers to charity retail?
• Small Charities: What can small charities learn from each other?
• Recycling: What price are charities getting for their rag and how can you maximise its value? Fact vs fiction in the rag market.

• Room keys can be collected from 3.00pm on Monday, from the Atrium/Reception area
• The Charity Retail Association’s registration desk in the Entrance Hall will be open from 9.00am to 6.00pm on Monday and from 8.00am to 3.00pm on Tuesday. Outside of these times, delegates should contact the 24-hour security on 0115 951 3013

registration desk if you wish to use the luggage room
TRANSPORT
• If you have travelled by car, it is free to park on campus. Please park in the EMCC car park if possible but if it is full, alternative car parks may be used. Permits may be required outside the EMCC car park – on-site parking attendants will advise if so. If needed, permits can be collected from EMCC reception
• On Monday evening, coaches will take you to The Nottingham Belfry for the drinks reception and dinner. The pick-up point will be outside East Midlands Conference Centre (there will be a sign outside). The coaches will run from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, and from 10.30pm – 12.30am to take delegates back to their accommodation
• If you need to book a taxi back to the station on Tuesday you can use the following companies: DG Cars: 0115 950 0500; Nottingham Cars: 0115 970 0700; Central Cars: 0115 976 2222; Lenton Cars: 0115 978 1781 or

• If you have ordered a special meal e.g. vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, please make yourself known to the
catering staff
INTERNET ACCESS
• To access WiFi in EMCC just accept the terms and conditions and you are connected. No password is required
• There is a University of Nottingham guest WiFi which is accessed by setting up an account via phone or laptop which will produce an account, the password will then be sent to you

• Please complete the evaluation form in your pack, and return it to the registration desk on Tuesday 27 June, or post it back to us
OTHER INFORMATION
