CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND IT – CIVIL ENGINEERING Free Seminar/ Presentation (CPD) Friday 4 September 2015: Start at 1600hrs Building Purple 12, Room 2.15 High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Cement-Based Composites for Future Infrastructure by Prof. Viktor Mechtcherine, Technical University, Dresden, Germany Using new types of fibre concrete could revolutionise the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, and construction as well as the renovation of building structures in many areas of application. This presentation by Prof. Mechtcherine will focus on novel high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (HPFRCC) for new construction as well as for strengthening and repair of buildings and infrastructure. He will give an overview of research activities at the TU Dresden and on practical applications of two prominent representatives of this new group of concrete materials: strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCCs) and textile-reinforced concrete (TRC). In addition, the principle and applications of internal curing concepts using super absorbent polymers (SAP) will be briefly addressed. Viktor Mechtcherine is Professor of Construction Materials and Director of the Institute of Construction Materials at the Technical University Dresden, Germany. Before that he was Professor at the TU Kaiserslautern (2003-2006) and Chief Research Engineer with the Institute of Reinforced Concrete Structures and Building materials at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – KIT (1998-2003). His current research interests include fibre-reinforced cement-based materials, rheology, concrete technology, fracture mechanics, durability and new additives. He is Chair of RILEM Technical Committee "Recommendations for Application of Super Absorbent Polymers in Concrete Construction" and active member in the following scientific bodies: RILEM Bureau (Réunion Internationale des Laboratoires d’Essais et de Recherches sur les Matériaux et les Constructions), RILEM Technical Activities Committee, Steering Committee of the fib (fédération internationale du béton) Commission 8 "Concrete", Advisory Board of International Association of Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Concrete Structures (IAFraMCos), Presidium of the Collaborative Research Centre ‘‘Textile Reinforcement for Structural Strengthening and Retrofitting” of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Expert Board “Construction products made of fibre-reinforced cementitious materials” of the German Institute of Structural Engineering (DIBt), Russian Academy of Engineering, Editorial Advisory Committee of the Journal “Materials and Structures“, Editorial Board of the Journal “Cement and Concrete Composites”.

High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Cement-Based Composites

for Future Infrastructure

by

Prof. Viktor Mechtcherine, Technical University, Dresden, Germany

Using new types of fibre concrete could revolutionise the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and

architectural design, and construction as well as the renovation of building structures in many areas of application.

This presentation by Prof. Mechtcherine will focus on novel high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based

composites (HPFRCC) for new construction as well as for strengthening and repair of buildings and infrastructure. He

will give an overview of research activities at the TU Dresden and on practical applications of two prominent

representatives of this new group of concrete materials: strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCCs) and

textile-reinforced concrete (TRC). In addition, the principle and applications of internal curing concepts using super

absorbent polymers (SAP) will be briefly addressed.
