independence from the

Invincible Armada
• England support for the
Protestants in the
Netherlands led to a war
between England and
Spain. Phillip II organised
a naval fleet “La Armada
Invencible” and sent to
invade England, but he
was not succesful and the
Spanish fleet was
defeated in 1588

• He became king of
Portugal in 1580
when the Portuguese
king died without an
heir Portugal kept all
its laws and
institutions.
