Lyndsey Goldberg, Charles County Program Name: Summer Asian Cultural Festival Date: August 20, 2016 Start Time: 10:00 AM End Time: 2:00 PM Age Level - All Ages Estimate Number of Attendees 75 Program Description: I would like to have a festival celebrating summer and the Asian culture. I would set up a variety of rooms filled with different activities. I would have an artist from the Charles County Art Alliance come and demonstrate the art form of calligraphy. The Waldorf Martial Arts school could come and do a short class and demonstration of Taekwondo. The Anime club at the library could show Japanese Animated films in another room. The club can also set up games to play that you would find at a Japanese summer festival. The children’s librarian could do a story time and teach the young attendees how to make simple origami. I would also like to get a group of taiko drummers from the Chin Hamaya Culture Center to perform. We could also have a demonstration on how to wear a Kimono. Purpose: I plan to have this festival during the summer. I would like the festival to celebrate summer and the many artistic gifts the Asian culture has brought to the United States. I think having it at the library would give our customers, who may not want to always make the trip to the city for cultural festivals, another local option to celebrate summer and learn about Asian art and culture. Library’s Mission: This program fits in with the library’s mission of “making available information, books, and other library materials that most closely match the needs of our service community, the resident of Charles County”. I think our residents would enjoy and benefit from an educational and fun program that makes them familiar with the Asian cultures and all they have to offer.

Librarys Mission: This program fits in with the librarys mission of making available information, books, and other library materials that most closely match the needs of our service community, the resident of Charles County. I think our residents would enjoy and benefit from an educational and fun program that makes them familiar with the Asian cultures and all they have to offer.

Potential Community Partners: Charles County Art Alliance, Waldorf Martial Arts, Chin Hamaya Culture Center in Waldorf, Waldorf West Anime Club, Library volunteers.

Necessary Steps: I would contact the groups I choose as community partners and see if we could work together to make the festival happen. I would discuss the program with my supervisor and the necessary people at the library. I would check the calendar and make sure the meeting rooms will be available on the date I choose. I would create flyers and get all the publicity ready to advertise this event. I would use social media (facebook, pinterest, instagram), library flyers, the library and Art Alliance newsletters, our local newspaper and word of mouth to advertise and promote this event.

Evaluation: Program evaluations are giving out at all library events to track our customers satisfaction at each event. The amount of attendees that came would also indicate the success of the event.
