Aviation Projects:

FAA Airport Traffic Control Tower and Base Building, LaGuardia Airport, Flushing, New YorkSenior Project Architect: Facility is an air traffic control tower facility consisting of a $66 million, 200 foot high air traffic control tower and a 24,000 SF story base building and link that had extremely tight site restrictions with virtually no set- back area available. Because of the airports location, the tower came under stringent security requirements. The tower and base building are constructed of reinforced concrete, elements of structural precast concrete, metal composite panels, and high impact resistant windows. The 200-foot tower meets the stringent security requirements while still allowing for a complete view of the entire airport fields and facilities to include all landings and take offs. Services included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.

FAA Airport Traffic Control Tower and TRACON / Base Building, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Phoenix, ArizonaSenior Project Architect: Facility is a air traffic control tower facility consisting of a $58 million, 78,000 GSF, 320 foot high secured air traffic control tower and TRACON in the middle of the country is the fourth busiest airport, on a site that only has 130’ x 240’ of buildable area that Jacobs did as a Design-Build Project. The security requirements and the site setbacks dictated the design of the circulation patterns, guard house, perimeter walls, base building, and tower locations. The facility emerges from the earth as an abstract version of canyon walls indigenous to the southwest environment. The new ATCT anchors the site and becomes not only a beacon for the region but an icon for the City of Phoenix. The tower projects a confident vision of the future and an elegance that is representative of the image that Phoenix and the surrounding valley portrays. Services included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.

FAA Facility Security Risk Management (FSRM), ARTCC Security Upgrades, Chicago (ZAU) ARTCC, Aurora, IllinoisSenior Project Architect: A fast track series of security upgrades to improve the perimeter security to the FAA - Air Route Travel Control Centers (ARTCC) thru-out the USA, which included upgrades to the perimeter fence security, perimeter camera surveillance, and a new one-story 20’-0” wide x 30’-0” long Guard House thru which all employee’s, visitor’s and deliveries are screened by armed security guards. The Chicago (ZAU) ARTCC – FSRM project was the prototype Guard House used for all the ARTCC’S thru-out the USA. I also worked on the Boston (ZBW) ARTCC FSRM and the Albuquerque (ZAB) ARTCC FSRM fast track projects. Service included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.

Army & Army National Guard Projects:

Battle Command Training Center’s (BCTC), Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Bragg, North Carolina Senior Project Architect: The function of the Battle Command Training Center is to provide virtual combat training for the military inside the facility in the form of classrooms and work cells and outside in simulated combat environments The Fort Riley, Kansas BCTC is a one-story building of 89,400 GSF with a cost of $23 million. The challenge for the design team was how to allow for future expansion and create a suitable environment in a facility that requires an artificial low illumination to function properly. The design team’s approach enhances the interior light quality with roof top clerestories that lead you through the circulation space forming a “light snake” corridor. The need for flexibility and growth in three dimensions led to a cruciform plan. The exterior materials are a combination of metal panel, polycarbonate, glass, and masonry. Services included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.

The Primary Facility includes Administrative Office and Supply Building; an Education Facility with 16 Classrooms, Multi-Purpose Training Area, Auditorium, and Library; Dining facilities, S-4 and Billeting for 504 soldiers. The architectural influence of Florida was incorporated into the RTI through use of gabled roofs on buildings and covered walkways between buildings to help protect the building structures and students from torrential down-pours that are common in Florida. In addition shutters, brise soleils, deep overhangs, and trellised structures were utilized to provide shading, protect personnel and students from the sun and provide energy conservation for the buildings. The architecture is modeled in the context of historical structures located in St Augustine, FL, yet are translated in a more modern form utilizing materials such as metal, glass, and masonry, elevating the RTI to a “World Class” Facility that enhances soldiers quality of life. Services included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.

A separate 14,597 SF Basic Issue Items (BII) Building Storage Facility was constructed to facilitate efficient BII issue/ turn-in operations. The client wanted a flexible and naturally lit space that could meet their needs within a very tight construction budget of $28 million. The design team developed a building solution by arranging work bays as fingers to a central administrative spine. This allowed for continuous polycarbonate wall panels along the work bay exterior to allow for natural day lighting. The exterior is a combination of metal panel, masonry, polycarbonate, and glass. Services included design, contract documents, and construction phase support.
