Charlotte Choice charter Kindergarten Summer Reading Project 2017-2018 School Year Dear Parents/Guardians, Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy family, but let’s not forget about reading! This letter is to advise you of your students’ very first ELA project. This project must be com- pleted over the summer and is due on Thursday, September 28, 2017. This project will be part of your child’s 1st quarter ELA grade. Please see attached rubric for point breakdown. Your child will be responsible for reading one book written by one of the following authors: Dr. Seuss Eric Carle Ezra Jack Keats Margaret Wise Brown Mo Willems Jane O’Conner Marcus Pfister Each student must make one of the following projects: Create puppets to represent the characters in the book you read. Help your child to act our the book from beginning, to middle, to end. Please have your child bring in the pup- pets, when Kindergarten starts, so that they can perform the story for their class. Puppet shows can also be videotaped and emailed in. Families who create setting dioramas will receive will receive extra smiles. Draw a comic strip of the book that you read. Please include at least three different scenes (choosing at least one scene from the beginning, the middle and the end). Adults please help your child to write a sentence or speech bubbles for each part of the comic strip. Using your creativity and technology, please help your child to retell the story of the book you have read. You have creative freedom! Please make sure to choose a media presenta- tion that we will be able to show at school when we share our projects. Kindergarten Summer Reading Project

2017-2018 School Year

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy family, but let’s not forget about reading!

This letter is to advise you of your students’ very first ELA project. This project must be com-

pleted over the summer and is due on Thursday, September 28, 2017. This project will be

part of your child’s 1st quarter ELA grade. Please see attached rubric for point breakdown.

Your child will be responsible for reading one book written by one of the following authors:

Each student must make one of the following projects:

be part of their first quarter ELA grade. Please see attached rubric for point breakdown.

Your child will be responsible for reading the following book:

“Flat Stanley: His Original Adventure”, by Jeff Brown

Each student must complete 3 activities from the list below, to go with the book. 1 of the

activities must be STEM:

Make an illustrated dictionary containing 5 or more difficult words from the book. You

must have the word, the definition, the illustration and use the word in a sentence.

Write 5 complete sentences about the things you learned while reading this book.

Make a poster about the story to include characters, setting, beginning, middle and

end. Use any art media/materials of your choice.

Choose a character from the book and write them a one paragraph (5 complete sen-

tences) letter.

Make a bookmark for the book. Draw a character on the front and write a brief

summary explaining the main events happening in the beginning, middle, and end of

the story.

STEM - Create a collage of Flat Stanley’s adventures using any computer app.

STEM - Create a video of you traveling with Stanley on his adventures.

STEM - Create a scrapbook about Flat Stanley’s adventures using a computer app.

“Freckle Juice”, by Judy Blume

Each student must complete 3 activities from the list below, to go with the book. 1 of the

activities must be STEM:

Design a poster board which includes the main details of the story Beginning, Middle,

and End.

Turn the events from your story into a game - make a game board, pieces & questions.

Make a charm bracelet to represent events and characters in your book - include infor-

mation sheet explaining the significance of each charm.

Design a new cover for your book, including a cover and summary using any computer

app.

STEM - Create a model of your main character(s) in the book, and a speech they would

write about how they felt during an event in the book

STEM - Create a written blog as a book critic, mention the authors purpose, give your

opinion on the story and tell what you would or wouldn’t change about it.

STEM - Create a scrapbook detailing the events of the book and write a summary of

what you created in your scrapbook using any computer app.

must have the word, the definition, the illustration and use the word in a sentence.

Make a timeline of the events in your book. You will need to have 15 events from the

story to include Beginning, Middle and End events.

Make a travel brochure advertising the setting of the story. Advertise why one would

want to travel there, when is he best time to travel, what can they do when they get

there and provide at least two different travel packages including cost & hotel stay.

STEM - Create a 3D model of Humphrey. Then write a speech about how he felt during

an event in the book.

STEM - Using goanimate.com recreate a scene from the book.

STEM - Create a written blog as a book critic, mention the authors purpose, give your

opinion on the story and tell what you would or wouldn’t change about it, make sure to

add a link to pictures you posted about the book.

STEM - Create a collage of the events of the book and write a summary of what you

created in your collage using a computer app.
