Among a multitude of initiatives the Charlotte Research Institute has to offer, there is one in which talented individuals have the opportunity to present their work to a judging panel of industry professionals in hopes of becoming
t h e n e x t entrepreneurial success. Five Ventures® was held on April 13, 2010 at the n e w U N C C h a r l o t t e student union,
the competitions priority is on high-growth businesses. Finalists were selected from the following business sectors: Pharmaceutical, Medical Devices, Alternative Energy, Green Tech, Information Technology,
Software-as-a-Service, Retail and also Student lead businesses. Five Ventures® focus is on early-stage high-growth businesses with less than $350,000 in third party investment or revenue (excluding grants). Entrepreneurs were asked to submit a two-page Executive Summary for review. Fifty one Executive Summaries were submitted to the review committee. Once an Executive S u m m a r y w a s r a n k e d , entrepreneurs were given a report notifying them of their status along w i t h r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s f o r improvement. The deadline for final applications was February 16, 2010. A lecture series was presented from January 19 to February 11 providing valuable guidance for both entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs.

Forty companies were chosen to present in the Semi-Finals. S t u d e n t l e a d b u s i n e s s e s competed on March 1, 2010. Non-Student businesses competed on the following day. Each team had 8 minutes to present their business concept to a review committee consisting primarily of volunteers from the Charlotte business community followed by 3-5 minutes of Q&A. The top six Student businesses advanced to the finals. The top three to five Non-Student businesses within each category moved on to the finals. There were a total of 22 finalists (6 Student Teams & 16 Non-Student Teams) competing in the F i v e Ve n t u r e s ® F i n a l s Competition on April 13, 2010. Five champions emerged (one per category). Prior to the finals, each team was assigned 2-3 coaches designed to give one-on-one consultation. During the finals entrepreneurs competed, on-stage in front of a live audience on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
Entrepreneurs participated in a series of “pitch sessions” and “role playing exercises” to determine each sector champion. The champion and runner-up of each category received awards. All finalists received in-kind services from our list of premium service providers in the Charlotte area.

Five Ventures 2010 Winners UNC Charlotte Student Union. Five Ventures took place at the Union on April 13, 2010.
2010 Five Ventures Winners and Runner-Ups received over $100,000 in donated In-Kind services. Categories included Life Sciences, IT/Software-as-a-Service, Green Tech/Energy, Retail/Service and Students. A total of 11 companies placed as a winner or runner-up with the five categories. The Winners of each category each received $1,000 in cash prize in addition to $15-20K in donated services. Runner-Ups received $500 and $10-15K in donated services. The following organizations have contributed post-event In-Kind services to the 11 winners and runner-ups.

Thurman & Soliman Appointed by Governor Perdue
Some of UNC Charlotte’s Best Have Been Recently Appointed to Commendable Offices.
Linda Thurman of the William States Lee College of Engineering has been appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to the public seat of the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. Her appointment is a five-year term with the opportunity for an additional five-year extension. Thurman will continue as the college’s faculty associate for student professional development and employer relations. Dr. Ahmed Soliman, Director of Motorsports and Automotive Research Center at UNC-Charlotte; has been appointed to serve on the Governor’s Motorsports Council. the council will meet for the next two years with the duties of recommending policy, procedures and program initiatives to protect, strengthen and expand the motorsports industry in North Carolina; provide ongoing advice and consultation to State policy leaders as to how to recruit, retain and expand the motorsports industry in North Carolina; conduct public hearings or input sessions regarding the motorsports industry when deemed necessary or beneficial; encourage support for the motorsports industry and serve as a resource for the industry to the North Carolina
General Assembly and State departments and agencies; and perform such other duties as assigned by the Governor or the Chair.
Bioinformatics BuildingThe Newest Jewel in the Millenial Campus Crown. The Bioinformatics and Genomics Department is now located in the new Bioinformatics Building. This is the first edifice in the Millennial campus to be LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Regional business as wel l as other organizations will collaborate with UNC Charlotte researchers in order to create new job opportunities, provide access to cutting edge facilities, and leverage talent. The new research space is in close proximity to state of the art equipment that promises to provide innovative findings. The $2.8 million dollar project was approved in 2006 in a joint venture with the State of North Carolina, and the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

the satellite office of the Charlotte
Research Institute (CRI) has proven to
be quite a success. Early in 2010
CRI moved from its temporary offices to the David H. Murdock
Research Institute (DHMRI),
CRI’s offices are under the
same roof where a collection
of state of the art equipment has been installed to enable
scientific research in genomics,
proteomics and metabolomics, and bioinformatics research.
Grand Opening of CRI’s offices at NCRC
On Thursday, May 20 UNCC CRI officially opened its offices at the North Carolina Research Campus. The celebratory event began with a ribbon cutting ceremony, and was followed by a myriad of professional speakers including CRI Executive Director Dr. Bob Wilhelm:

The B in BiotechUNC Charlotte’s Biotechnology Conference coming in October 2010
The 8th Annual Charlotte Biotechnology Conference proved to be quite a success. Also known as the flagship bio-tech conference for the region, the 9th edition of the conference promises to focus on biotechnology, the business of biotechnology, and research projects and current events in the region that impact biotechnology business. The mission of the CBC is to provide an overview of current activities and opportunities within the university, research, business, investment and economic development sectors.
IEEE-nergizing Our FutureAnnual IEEE Southeast Conference hosted by UNC Charlotte
This conference brought together industry leaders, engineers, students and others interested in new energy technology, professional development and a wide range of technical topics in electrical engineering and computer science. SoutheastCon attracts 400 - 500 students and 300 - 400 IEEE professionals each year. IEEE is the world's largest technical professional association. Through its more than 406,000 members in 160 countries, IEEE is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. Faculty from UNC Charlotte’s ECE Department played important roles in organizing, and hosting this conference. Activities included a reception in Grigg Hall, and tours of facilities at the center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications.

Nanotechnology ConferenceN stands for more than Nano. The 2010 NC Nanotechnology Commercialization conference was held March 31-April 1 in Greensboro at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center. This 2nd annual statewide conference was organized by the NC Board of Science & Technology and f e a t u r e d i n f o r m a t i o n o n nanotechnology-specific issues related to technology, business development, intellectual property, and technology transfer. Workshops focused on the relationship between nanotechnology a n d a p p l i c a t i o n s i n e n e r g y, environment, and national defense. Keynote presentations from leaders in the field in 2010 included Josh Wolfe, co-founder of Lux Capital, and Ian Ferguson, the new Chairman of the UNC Charlotte Electrical & Computer Engineering department. The evening reception and dinner featured Joe Raguso, CEO of Intrinsiq Materials. A student poster competition was organized for the first time in 2010, by the UNC Charlotte Association of Nanoscale Graduate Students. Fifteen posters from 5 universities (UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, NC A&T, UNC Greensboro, and UNC Charlotte) highlighted original North Carolina graduate student research in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The purpose of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) is to enhance the va lue o f co l laborat ive partnerships between university and industry in the United States. One way of doing this is by developing beta tests, tools and approaches that unify and streamline university-industry agreements. The mission of the UIDP is to nourish and expand collaborative partnerships between university and industry in the United States.
