Charter Schools Grant

• Allows 25 new petitions to be funded under this grant

• Allows ten new petitions to be funded for 07-08 school year

• Allows for previously approved and non funded charter schools to receive funding

Petition & Rubric

• The rubric to score petitions was reviewed by KSBE in September 2006

• A perfect score on the rubric is 188 points

• Minimum score of 144 points to be recommended for Charter School Status

• Petition and Rubric will be reviewed and modified prior to use in 2007-08 school year

• Twenty–one charter school petitions approved by local boards were submitted to KSDE for review

• Out of 21 petitions reviewed, 17 scored at or above the minimum of 144 points and 4 scored below 144 points

Funding Formula

• Year 1- Planning grants of $60,000• Traditionally planning has been from the time of

approval to July 1, with the school opening during August of the same year

• Federal Charter School Grant allows funding for a planning period of up to 18 months

• Section 5202 (C)(2) GRANTS TO ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS- Grants awarded by the Secretary to eligible applicants or subgrants awarded by State educational agencies to eligible applicants under this subpart shall be for a period of not more than 3 years, of which the eligible applicant may use —

• (A) not more than 18 months for planning and program design;

• (B) not more than 2 years for the initial implementation of a charter school

• Years 2 & 3 – Two times base student funding or actual expenses; whichever is lowest. Total funding not to exceed $155,000.
