President’s Message
This month may have been one of our busiest yet. First, a big congratulations go to
John & Judy Gho and the entire Golf Tournament Team. I can't imagine how the
event could have been more successful. Everyone had a fantastic time. We far
exceeded our budgeted profit and we have people rushing to sign up for next year.
This month was also the end of the school year. K-Kids had their final Award
Celebration with a Hot Dog Dinner for everyone. The presence of some of the
children is almost beyond belief. Look for them to be the leaders of our country in
about 40 years... BUGs also had it's last meeting. We celebrated with a Pizza
Party and Cupcakes. We gave each of the children a small Gift Bag and they
reciprocated with Gifts for each of us including a Homemade Piñata, a Framed
Thank You, and Chocolate Covered Strawberries.
Our Kiwanis One Day was held at Sheridan Elementary School. We worked with
their Principal to clear out and plant their Spring Garden. There were a few of us
that could barely move the next day, but the work was worth the effort. It was
starting to look great when we left.
And finally we welcome two new members to our group, Jeff McClain and Teresa
Avelar. I look forward to working with both of them in the future.
Summer should slow down a little, but look forward to some meaningful projects.
Together we are making a BIG DIFFERENCE...
Beth

Kiwanis Club of Lincoln Foothills Membership Growth
Contributed by Mary Luciano
Don’t forget to bring in new potential members. As of May 8th, we have added four new members for Fiscal Year
2016-2017. This year there is a challenge by Lt. Governor Laird Smith to obtain the new members. Let’s get creative
and get more members. See the Membership Challenge Chart below.
Let’s challenge ourselves to bring in more “Worker Bees.” Let’s get the word out about Kiwanis and all the wonderful
things that we do for our community.
Kathy Shaddox, our member chair will discuss at the next meeting ways to get new members and what tactics are
being used to recruit Millennials.

You Guys Are Rock Stars!
Eighteen Kiwanians from our Club attended the May 8th DCM. We hosted this DCM and had a chance to talk about
all the wonderful service projects we have done this past year. Looking back at this year, we have completed the
following projects:
• Healthy Snacks at 4 schools.
• Building Up Grades (BUGs) Coppin Elementary School: Helped students with homework and made great strides
in their levels of reading and comprehension of what they have read.
• K-Kids: Sock Mice for SPCA, Thanksgiving Baskets, Peanut Butter & Jam Sandwiches, Acts of Kindness,
Appreciation Breakfast for Teachers and Staff of Coppin Elementary School.
• Safety Awareness Day: Coppin Elementary School.
Remember, each member is required to attend two DCMs. Work with Edy to get scheduled for your DCMs. You will
be amazed at all the wonderful things are Division 44 clubs are doing. You will come away from a DCM
understanding the true meaning of Kiwanis.

was held with 137 people in attendance. Many raffle prizes were distributed as well as golf awards.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will be used to benefit the children of Lincoln. This year’s focus will be on
purchasing much needed Google Chrome Books, small laptop computers that will be used by students in classrooms at
C.C. Coppin Elementary.
Next year’s tournament will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Turkey Creek Golf Club.

Elections:
Elections for the K-Kids Board have been held for next year and a Community Service Calendar has been made. We
are working on improving K-Kids each year. Our goal this year is to have the K-Kids raise enough money to pay for
33% of their expenses.
Projects:
First project in September is to make 100 Trauma Dolls. We have met with Kristen Ireton / Laguna -Elk Grove Club,
to understand the process. John Moran is working on getting some help from our Lincoln Hills Sewing Group, Kathy
Shaddox is working with the Kaiser Emergency Trauma Center to determine delivery schedule. Mary Luciano is
writing Grants to obtain money for this project.

the Salt Mine. Organized and contributed to making 100 Thanksgiving Baskets with Turkeys for those less fortunate

What Kiwanis Means to Me
Contributed by Mary Taverna
Why did I join Kiwanis?
I joined Kiwanis because I saw it as an opportunity to meet new people, be of service to my community and improve
the quality of life for the youth of Lincoln.
Why Kiwanis and not another service club?
The mission of Kiwanis is to improve the world - one child and one community at a time. All of the charitable dollars
raised by the Kiwanis Club of the Lincoln Foothills stay in my community and are used for the intended purposes. I
am proud to be part of such an important mission.

What Kiwanis Means to Me
Contributed by Mike Hart
Why did I join Kiwanis?
I initially joined Kiwanis because my wife and I wanted to pay back the bounty we feel we have been given. I did not
know a thing about Kiwanis or their programs, but as I became a new member of the newly formed local club I quickly
learned of the good that we did for our local community and the children that we helped in our local schools.
Why Kiwanis and not another service club?
Having been a member of a club called Sertoma -"Service to Mankind"- many years ago, I knew that there must be a
local entity that did something similar. I have now been involved in several fundraisers and activities that have
contributed several thousands of dollars to the youth of our community and have benefited in my own well-being as I
feel my wife and I have contributed to theirs.

Special thanks to Joe and Lou Hill, and Michael and Mary Luciano for volunteering to help at the Relay for Life here
in Lincoln. Yes, we actually got Lou up and ready to handle registrations at 7:30am.
Once you have attended “Relay for Life,” you are hooked on participating on a yearly basis. The Cancer Survivors
walk the track with smiles on. It just gives you goose bumps and a warm feeling to see all the smiling faces. We hope
more of you will join us next year.
