It would have been no surprise if Cape Thoroughbred Sales had said “sorry, we can’t maintain our support because of financial restraints”. Instead, no doubt due to the business acumen of CTS chair and leading owner Chris van Niekerk, the R1.25m De Grendel CTS Ready-To-Run Stakes has the green light. “We are delighted to be offering a race with a purse of R1.25m and winning purse of R640,000. It will be an exciting race for a full array of owners,” said CTS sales executive Grant Knowles. Knowles is a guy who likes a bet so was asked which horse he fancied in the 1,400m race. He replied: “I think Seeking The Stars is a worthy favourite.”

Interestingly, Knowles owns a share in Seeking The Stars’ stablemate Spiritual Wind who has drawn pole position and is far from a forlorn hope after a facile maiden win. Of course, Seeking The Stars, the highest rated runner by 11 points, has a lot going for him, notably a good draw and that he is in the safe hands of trainer Vaughan Marshall. Nevertheless, it could pay to risk an each-way bet on Candice Bass-Robinson’s filly Lemon Delight. Yes, she’s drawn not far from the nearby highway, but this isn’t the first time jockey Aldo Domeyer has had to overcome a high barrier. A daughter of Flower Alley, Lemon Delight suggested she is above average (to Page 2)

Dennis Drier’s runners always warrant close scrutiny and the veteran trainer saddles four-year-old Cartel Captain who has not raced since the Mercury Sprint. However, his form includes a second in last season’s CTS 1200 as well as a third behind Eden Roc in the Merchants at Scottsville in June. Rio Querari gives the Snaith stable strong backup in a race where a close finish looks on the cards. The Turffontein fare does not set the pulses racing and punters face a difficult task in finding the winner of the feature race, the Grade 3 Fillies Mile. The vote goes to S’manga Khumalo’s mount Gee For Go, who has hardly put a hoof wrong in her seven career starts. Courtesy of Business Day. www.businesslive.co.za

when fourth behind Princess Calla last time out and she could well make the favourite pull out all the stops. Justin Snaith has his team in good form and his runner Tarantino is very much in the mix with a career record of one win and five places from his six outings. The son of Master Of My Fate is looking a bargain buy at R100,000. Sean Tarry saddles four runners and while he would like to win the race for Van Niekerk his best runner is probably the grey colt Willow Express. No surprise that he found Malmoos too smart in the recent Graham Beck Stakes. Anton Marcus loves to compete for the big prizes and his mount Fast Love will have his supporters. Also a son of Master Of My Fate, Glen Kotzen’s charge ran in a Grade 1 race at Greyville last time out. Some 35 minutes after the CTS Ready-To-Run, Mike de Kock’s three-year-old Malmoos will try to keep his undefeated record in the Grade 2 Avontuur Estate Concorde Cup. From pole position and regular rider Luke Ferraris in the saddle, the son of Captain Al should stay unbeaten. If he has been affected by the long road trip, the two likely to take advantage are Seeking The Stars’ two stablemates Linebacker and Rascallion. The latter is 2kg better off with Linebacker compared with their recent clash. The third feature on the exciting Kenilworth card is the GG Gaming CTS Cape Merchants in which Snaith’s five-time winner Erik The Red is sure to top the betting boards. With just 52kg on his back compared with the usual 60kg, the Captain Al colt will probably think he has got loose and could be another feature winner for Varsfontein Stud, also breeders of Malmoos. Even so, the each-way call in this race is going to be Greg Ennion’s five-year-old Elusive Trader. The gelding’s close fourth behind Run Fox Run was an outstanding effort and a repeat run will bring him right into contention.

Hein Moller and family of Swellendam’s Ten Einde Stud have put in hard work to make their farm competitive as a vendor in recent years; their foals are looking good and Hein is expecting a good CTS Ready To Run and Mixed Sale, next week. He bought Lot 82 from the Moutonshoek Dispersal. This is a Rafeef colt from Relentless Storm (Hennesy) who was a talented race filly and has produced five winners from six runners, threatening to throw a top horse. “This one was a late bloomer, but he’s coming along steadily, he’s very nice,” said Moller. Lot 85 is Jackson filly from Ruby Heart, already the dam of seven winners including this filly’s full-brother Khopesh, a very useful dual winner who was injured before he could reach his classic potential. “I am very happy with her,“ said Moller. Lot 137 is Hearts Thunder, a colt by Grey’s Inn from Heart Of Destiny, by Danzero, whose only foal to race was a decent Judpot colt who finished second in the Ready To Run Cup of his year. “I’m excited about this one, he’s athletic and smart, certainly one buyers should come and have a look at.”

Lot 160 (Coup De Grace) was unsold at the National Sale in April, but she’s come on leaps and bounds and Moller told: “She was too immature for Nationals, she’s looking much better now!” The same for Lot 162, Future Thinker, who is a different filly now than she was in April. She’s by Visonaire, and is the first foal of Miss Einstein (VAR), who hails closely from a family of powerhouse sprinters including Schiffer, My Kazzie, Royal IQ and Mentor. capethoroughbredsales.com

The home of Horizon (SAF), by Dynasty

Golden Touch has been a vendor at CTS sales since the inception of the company, with documented success. Gary Jolliffe, who runs Golden Touch with his wife, Jackie, said: “Three of our Ready To Run graduates from the past five years came out and won the first baby race of their respective seasons, very soon after the sale, and two of them went on to earn stakes in the big Ready To Run money races in Sunset Trip, Gold Image, and Miss Generosity. “Four of the top 20 rated horses for this year’s Ready To Run Stakes - Northern Song, Tarantino, Fast Love and Sovereign Rose were bred or raised by Golden Touch. Here are Gary’s comments: Lot 31 SPLITTING IMAGE: This Twice Over filly is a lovely good sized and is very athletic. Her half-sister, Gold Image, won the first 800m 2year old race for her new owners, within two weeks of the RTR sale, and then ran 3rd in the1 million Rand Kenilworth Kuda Sprint. She went on to win a 3rd race, and earned Gr 3 black type in the Strelitzia Stakes. This is a lovely big filly and very athletic, and comes out of a speedy female line. Lot 34 BUSH TRACKER: This good looking, striking Elusive Fort colt moves well with a lovely action and good attitude. He hails from a family full of black type, which bodes good for his future. Elusive Fort is the sire of the Gr1 Derby winner this year. A good one to earmark and watch at the gallops. A lovely correct colt. Lot 46 – EMPRESS OF JADE: This lovely, big and long striding Rafeef filly is well related to the likes of Elusive Silva and Elusive Fort, and hails from the female line of the famous Millard “E” family. She has a beautiful action and looks like her speed will extend to the classic distance too. She is a stand-out filly with a fine pedigree.

Lot 70 – JACK TARR: This magnificent Jackson colt (below) is a half- brother to Miss Generosity who won the first 800m 2-year old race, She backed that up with a 2nd win at Greyville. With his precocious attitude and beautiful action, this well -developed colt should follow suit and win early in his career.

As Agent: Lot 2—HAPPY AND GLORIOUS: Gimmetthegreenlight colt. This colt is by one of the hottest sires in the country at the moment from a nursery that produces champions, Wilgerbosdrift Stud. He is still immature but shows lovely paces in his work. He has a brilliant pedigree. LOT 11 Unnamed Twice Over filly. A very well-bred filly especially on the dam side. Twice Over is producing winners of both fillies and colts. She is a neat filly and has a touch of class about her and will be a value purchase. LOT 21 ON THE ROAD AGAIN – Vercingetorix colt He is typical of Vercingetorix and has a beautiful action. He is quite immature but looks like he is going to be quite speedy. He is a great mover and shows a lovely gallop and will have a lot to come. capethoroughbredsales.com

Robbie Fradd is enjoying a hot streak at the moment as he and his old adversary Jeff Lloyd go about teaching the young guns a thing or two in a blossoming new partnership. Lloyd recently took up the management of Fradd after the pair spent many years competing against each other on the track in a number of countries. Fradd has wound back the clock in November, riding a treble at Caloundra last Friday, a double at Doomben the following day and a winner from one ride at Ipswich on Wednesday. Fradd at one time was in the same stable as Lloyd being managed by Cameron Partington before joining the Glen Courtney team. Fradd said he had no issue with Courtney, but wanted someone to more specifically concentrate on his rides and that’s when he approached Lloyd. Lloyd took on the management of Sean Cormack some time ago, keen to see him secure more opportunities and he had no hesitation accepting the Fradd offer. “I needed someone to concentrate on myself and Jeff is very good with his form and does track work as well,” Fradd said.

“It’s only been a short time, but he has been very good at picking rides for me.” Lloyd managed his own rides for the last couple of years before retiring, priding himself on judging where horses can improve or are ready to win. “He’s very good. He studies a lot,” Fradd said. “We can go through the race together, discuss certain things, work out how we expect it to be run. Jeff rides work for Toby and Trent (Edmonds) most mornings and I go there on Tuesdays. (Continues Page 11)

“It does help. We will gallop some together, other times he will work it out and let me know. He loves it.” Fradd says the change has put a real spring in his step.: “I’m getting rides from people I’ve never got rides from before and winning,” he said. He’s done extremely well for me.” Fradd has a good association with the Edmonds stable, and the combination has linked for three winners over the past two Saturdays.

They combine again on Saturday with Grey Missile in the Mooloolaba Cup: “The grey horse galloped well Tuesday morning and I think the mile on the bigger track will suit him, because he will be in the first two where he likes to be,” Fradd said. www.racenet.com.au Note to younger readers: Fradd (55) and Lloyd (58) were both among our very, very best riders from the 1980’s onwards before emigrating to Australia. –tt

Meanwhile the Lloyd clan’s plan for world domination takes its next step today when 17-year-old Zac (right) is licensed as an apprentice. “This Friday graduating next Friday race riding. Congratulations Zac we so proud of you,” Mrs Nicola Lloyd contributed on Twitter. Zac’s older brother Jaden (18) has already established himself as an up and coming Aussie apprentice attached to the Matt Cumani yard based in Ballarat, Victoria. Jaden rode 38 winners last season but was unfortunately sidelined for a few months due to a fractured pelvis after a horse fell on him during Ballarat trackwork back in July. Thankfully Jaden (below) is back in the saddle again, but not surprisingly after the enforced break has made a slowish start to this campaign. He takes five rides at Gold Coast on Saturday.

It seems this is the end of the production line, as Jeff Lloyd’s eldest child Tayah is in her early twenties, and as far as can be ascertained has no champion jockey aspirations. –tt
