Last weekend several friends and I decided to bundle up a touch and do a little stargazing over Chautauqua Lake. At dusk we built a small fire, pulled out the folding lawn chairs and opened a nice bottle of white, grown right here in our own region. Words can’t describe how gorgeous it all was – the night sky simply sparkled. It was a wonderful way to unwind after a very busy week. There’s not too many of these weekends left. Summer is beginning to close out and yielding to more autumn-like weather. Our little community here has taken on a life of its own. Waking up from its long, silent winter sleep, spring time is much like a yawn and a stretch.

Activity starts in earnest with the months of May and June rolling by. Summer is – SUPER! The streets and sidewalks are politely congested. Residents and visitors alike enjoy all this area has to offer. It’s like the farmers say – you have to make hay while the sun shines, and the sun shines beautifully for about two-and-a-half months. And now, autumn has slowly snuck in. From my perspective, the village deserves a bit of a break, doesn’t it? I don’t know about you, but I’m going to relish the on-set of autumn. It’s my favorite time of the year – a season for all of us to get ready for what comes next… I’ve said it before – there is no better place to be than right here and right now! Enjoy! JZ

bY ToDD TraNum, PresiDeNT & ceo, chamber oF commerce It’s been quite a week in Chautauqua County! Once again, we were treated to an extraordinary event watching Fredonia native Jenn Suhr in Olympic Pole Vaulting - this time as she won the gold medal! Born Jennifer Stuczynski, our gold medalist only began to compete in pole vault in 2005. Always an athlete, she played a number of sports at Fredonia High School and won the New York State pentathlon title as a senior in 2000. At Roberts Wesleyan College near Rochester she competed in basketball and track and field. She has worked with coach,

Rick Suhr, for many years and the pair married two years ago. When Jenn Suhr won a silver medal in the last summer Olympics, Chautauqua County shared in the proud moment. This time, seeing the gold medal around her neck, we are all beaming and delighted with the story of a local girl who is number one in the world! Congratulations to Jenn and to the Stuczynski family. We are also proud to be celebrating with the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Center in the wake of another tremendously successful Lucy Fest weekend! The Lucille Ball Festival of Comedy drew thousands of people to the Jamestown area, bringing some national media coverage

our way. The enduring draw of Jamestown native Lucille Ball, the fun of the team competition in this year’s Lucy World Games, and the top notch talent of headliners Billy Gardell and Paula Poundstone created yet another big win for our region. With continued success like the last two years, Lucy Fest will remain an important economic and tourism driver in Chautauqua County! This combination of big wins for our county this week can serve as reminders to us all that there is much to be proud of right here in our own backyard. We continue to be a world-class tourist destination and an exemplary training ground as the World’s Learning Center.

The city of Jamestown, New York and it’s Lucille Ball Comedy Festival were profiled at length in the NY Times, among the most widely read newspapers in the world, on Monday, August 6th. The article, which featured multiple photos and a map image pinpointing Jamestown, received coverage on the front page and two additional pages in the “A” section. The article examined the direction the festival has taken over the past few years, the impact of comedy programming on Jamestown’s economy, and even much of Jamestown’s unique history. In a press conference held at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena on Wednesday,

Jamestown In NY TimesNY Times Captured Jamestown Perfectly August 6th

Secretary of State Cesar A. Perales specifically discussed the significance of this media placement, commenting that the impact of having an article in the NY Times would be immeasurable in terms of creating a buzz around Jamestown and Chautauqua County. “As the Secretary of State said to me afterwards, ‘a dollar figure cannot even be placed on the value of that piece,’” said Journey Gunderson, executive director for the Lucy Desi Center for Comedy. “It’s true. Jamestown was just featured, favorably, in a publication read by millions of people worldwide. We should all be excited about this as a

community together. It’s a great thing for the whole area.” “The content and essence of [the NY Times] article perfectly captured what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Tom Benson, board president for the Lucy Desi Center for Comedy. “The fact that we got that level of exposure is something we’re really proud of, as everyone in the community and region should be.” In addition to the NY Times article, Jamestown’s Lucille Ball Comedy Festival has been featured this month in other newspapers across the globe such as the Chicago Tribune, the Columbus Dispatch, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Lucy Fest and Jamestown will also be featured in an upcoming ABC 20/20 special, “Best in TV, The Greatest TV Shows of our Time,” hosted by Barbara Walters on September 18th at 9pm EST. I Love Lucy is nominated in two categories, Best Television Comedy of All Time and Best Television Show of All Time. Festival attendees from August 1st-5th included representatives from over half of the states of America, as well as visitors from various other countries. “The enormous success of Lucy Fest 2012 gives us another big piece of our foundation to build upon,” Benson said. “This is another great year under our belt that we will use as a building block.”

The Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, or “Lucy Fest,” embodies Ball’s vision for her hometown legacy: a celebration of the comedic arts held annually on the weekend closest to her birth date, August 6th. This year’s festival ran August 1st-5th and featured performances by Paula Poundstone, Lucie Arnaz, Tammy Pescatelli, Tony Deyo, Story Pirates, Billy Gardell from CBS’s Mike & Molly, and much more.

Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, “We take the music very seriously; we just don’t take ourselves too seriously.” In the process, they are reinventing the idea of A’ Cappella on the modern pop

landscape. Originally formed a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon – with a huge fan base, millions of viewers on YouTube… and a contract with Atlantic Records. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital

processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal – the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor. Straight No Chaser’s goal has always remained the same. As Randy says, “We want the audience to not miss the instruments, be surprised by what we’re doing, and in the end, appreciate the songs in a whole new way.” With influences from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Kanye West and Mozart this group puts a uniquely sophisticated, yet humorous spin on well known hits and holiday favorites. You can spend an evening with this ten member quirky a cappella group Friday, August 24 beginning at 8:15 pm at the Chautauqua Institution. Go to ciweb.org to purchase your tickets or get more information on this event you definitely don’t want to miss.

Straight No Chaser has taken Chautauqua and the nation by storm! We are thrilled to welcome them back to the Amp stage this season. They take their music seriously but not themselves. They are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape. Do not miss the opportunity to experience this amazing ensemble. August 24 at 8:15 pm.

The end of August is the deadline for donors to the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County 2012 Fund Drive to be recognized during the 2012-2013 Season.

UAA Fund Drive ClosingAugust 31 Deadline For Donors To Be Recognized In Programs

Board member Sally Ulrich explained that the eight member organizations of the United Arts Appeal show their appreciation to their supporters by identifying them in their printed programs throughout the year, on the UAA website, and more. “Our fiscal year closes August 31,” Ulrich said, “so we need to hear from our supporters by then in order to give them the full recognition they deserve.” In addition to funding for individual artists and smaller arts projects through its Projects Pool grants program, the United Arts Appeal provides operating support for eight of the larger arts organizations in Chautauqua County: the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet, Community Music Project, 1891 Fredonia Opera House, Infinity Visual and Performing Arts, Jamestown Concert Association, Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, Reg Lenna Civic Center, and the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. “The programs our members offer add considerably to the quality of life in Chautauqua County,?”Ulrich noted. “This is an opportunity to make a

difference in a big way!? The United Arts Appeal receives significant support from Chautauqua County, the Jessie Smith Darrah Fund, the Hultquist Foundation, Community Development Association, and Dr. Bruce Rockwell. Major donors to the 2012 fund drive to date also include the Holmberg Foundation, Matric Limited, M. L. Feather, Phillips Lytle LLP, Wegmans, Carlson’s Jewelry, Fessenden Laumer & DeAngelo, Gebbie Foundation/Director’s Discretionary Grant on behalf of Rhoe B. Henderson III, Mark and Donna Hampton, Lake Shore Savings Bank, Lakeshore Orthopedic Group, Betsy and David Shepherd, Short & Smith Insurance Associates, Carolyn and Tyler Swanson, and Lissa and Sherwood VanDewark. Contributions can be made by check to the United Arts Appeal, 715 Falconer Street, Jamestown, NY 14701. For all the benefits available to contributors to the United Arts Appeal, see “Support UAA” at www.UnitedArtsAppeal.org. For the complete list of contributors, see “BRAVO!” at the website.

Last spring’s presentation by the Jamestown Concert Association of professional organist and Jamestown native Josh Stafford is an example of the quality of programs offered by members of the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County. Those who contribute to the UAA’s 2012 Fund Drive by the end of the month will be acknowledged throughout the 2012-2013 season for their support of the arts.

ERA Team VP Real Estate is please to announce our 3rd annual Agents of Hope Golf Tournament to benefit the ALS Association and the ALS Division of MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). The tournament will be held Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at the Chautauqua Golf Club. ALS- Amyorophic lateral sclerosis – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease of the motor neurons, the nerve clls in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. For unknown reasons, motor neurons die, and the muscles they control become weak and then nonfunctional. Eventually, the person with ALS is paralyzed. Death, usually from respiratory complications, typically occurs between 3 and 5 years after diagnosis. However, about 10% of people with ALS live more than 10 years, and some survive for decades.

Agents Of HopeERA Team VP Real Estate Tournament to Benefit ALSA &MDA-ALS

Established in 1985, the ALS Association’s mission is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them compassionate care and support. The ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. MDA’s involvement with ALS began in the early 1950s when Eleanor Gehrig, widow of bellowed Yankees first basemen Lou Gehrig, was searching for a way to fight the disease that had taken her husband’s life. Mrs. Gehrig served more than a decade as MDA National Campaign Chairman. Since inception, MDA has dedicated more than $290 million to ALS research, services and information programs.

New techniques and products are continually emerging that make it increasingly possible for people with ALS to adapt to the disease, to pursue their intersts, and to continue to live rich and rewarding lives. The ALS Association, as well as the MDA-ALS Division’s research, services, advocacy and information programs are made possible through the generosity of individuals, sponsors and private contributors. (For more information visit alsa.org or als-mda.org). As you’re determine your financial and charitable goals for 2012 please take time to consider joining our team, Agents of Hope, in the fight against ALS. Your time and consideration are greatly appreciated. For more information on the event, to sign up, or sponsorship contact Hanna Soffel at 716-789-2093 or email [email protected]

Mary Jane Stahley, Librarian/Manager retired from the Bemus Point Library. She was the Librarian/Manager for 24 years. The years range from 1966 to 1969 and then from 1990 to 2012. For those 24 years, you could depend on her welcome when you entered the Library. She loved to greet everyone who entered and always made you feel comfortable. She was quoted as saying, “ The library was not a place you had to keep

Up Close: Bemus Friend RetiresMary Jane Stahley Retires After 24 Years At Bemus Point Library

real quite when you came in.” All of us will remember her as the Librarian, but we will also remember her for much more! She was the “go-to” for much information about the Bemus area and Chautauqua Lake. According to Mary Jane, the library has “a really good collection of area history” including photos and scrapbooks provided by her. If you had a question about the area, you could just place a call to Mary Jane and nine times out of ten she would not hesitate on answering. Mary Jane is also the local historian, which seems to go so well with being a librarian. Her collections and personal knowledge of local history is amazing. Over the years people have contacted her to find lost history of their families. Some even were adopted and wanted to find their biological family. She was able to help one particular family to reunite and was actually invited to their family reunion. She also is an, “extreme reader”, one could say. However, Mary Jane’s lifestyle is not quite in keeping of what one would imagine for a librarian/historian. Her other interests consist of American Pickers, Antiques Road Show and Jeopardy to name a few

television shows. She is a serious fan of the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, if the Steelers aren’t doing well she will quickly turn her loyalty to the Chicago Bears! She likes the old NFL teams. Jimmy Johnson is her favorite NASCAR driver. Often these sessions or reading on her porch are done with an ice cold Rolling Rock beer. The Rolling Rock is preferred with a glass of ice. Mary Jane enjoys living in Bemus Point. She knew that the summer changed Bemus Point to a “resort place with a whole different life in the summer”. So, year- round Bemus Pointers waited every year for Mary Jane’s husband to put his sign out with a count-down of summer. At her retirement “get together” last Wednesday, she was overheard talking to a wife of one of her grandsons. She asked Mary Jane what advice she had after being married 55 years. Mary Jane did not hesitate to reply, “ Have a good time and treat each other nice.” It would seem that, that is not only Mary Jane’s philosophy for marriage but also for life. A plaque to honor Mary Jane’s years of service will hang in the Bemus Point Library.

Pictured, Mary Jane Stahley, retired from Bemus Point Library after 24 years. “All of us will remember her as the Librarian, but we will also remember her for much more!”

Highlanders there will be 8 other bagpipe bands, Celtic bands and Celtic dancers. All the tremendous acts will perform as Massed Bands for the opening and closing ceremonies. The Buffalo Heavies Kilted Throwers Club - Traditional Scottish Athletes – make the London Olympians look soft and dainty. Throughout the day they will be throwing really large and heavy objects around

whilst wearing traditional Scottish kilts. Many of the contestants are world class in their respective divisions and have well-earned reputations in their sport. Don’t miss the Open Stone Throw, the Weight Throw for Distance and the Scottish Hammer Toss. If that is not enough shear awesomeness then catch the Caber Toss, which is when the contestants toss around a gigantic log that resembles a telephone pole. The various contests start at 10am and the last is set for 3:45pm. There will also be a kids corner where aspiring throwers can get a feel for the real deal by tossing

miniature cabers and the like. After the closing ceremony it will be time for Ceilidh (cool word for Scottish party) until 10pm. In addition to live music, food and libations, this will also be a good time to compare notes with the clan members if you are interested in doing genealogical research on your own family. The event organizers hope to see over 20 clans of the Celtic World gather this up-coming weekend. Admission is $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and free for lads and lasses under twelve. An extensive schedule of all the music, fun and games can be found at

Imagine this: You walk into a room and are surrounded by Monarch Butterflies. Maybe one will land on you. Maybe you will see an adult emerge from its chrysalis. Maybe you will watch a caterpillar munch on some milkweed. It’s amazing! See tiny tags attached to the butterflies’ wings so that scientists can track their migration. Bring your camera! The Monarch Butterfly Festival is about transformation. The auditorium will be transformed into a garden of wildflowers

with butterflies flying about. One corner will have volunteers bringing butterflies over for people to hold. Citizen scientists in the back of the room tag the butterflies as part of a multi-year research project to understand the monarch’s amazing migration to Mexico each year. The entire life cycle of the butterfly, from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult, will be on display. Visitors will be able to hold the largest caterpillars and a lucky few may even get to watch a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. Another corner will have people tagging the butterflies with stickers to help scientists track their migration. Tiny butterfly eggs will be on display by the back windows,

along with monarch caterpillars of all sizes. The largest ones can be held with the help of volunteers. There will also be butterfly crafts for kids, food for sale, tours of Audubon’s butterfly garden and a plant sale aimed at getting more milkweed, the only food for monarch caterpillars, out into the community. Volunteers will also be on hand to help children and adults use insect nets outside to catch, identify and release butterflies on Audubon’s grounds. The annual 2012 event will be bigger and better than ever before! Mark your calendars. August 25 from 10 am to 4 pm. For more information go to www.jamestownaudubon.org.

Inside Business: C21 Turner BrokersA Tradition of Community Involvement

bY Nicholas Pircio95.7 Fm, wPig

They are proud of their heritage and standing in the local community. As Century 21 Turner Brokers celebrates thirty years at their Lakewood office, the family wants to share their story. Owner Tom Turner opened the office in 1982, and purchased the local Century 21 franchise six years ago. The company history lists numerous awards attesting to their community involvement. All of their agents and associate brokers are active in various organizations. The company is involved in United Way activities, the St. Susan Center, The Bemus Bay Pops, The Arts Council, the Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation, The Jackson Center, and the WCA Hospital Capital Campaign. Michelle Turner notes, “We’ve been the recipient for the past four years of the Readers Choice Award for favorite real estate company.” How important is community involvement? A book released in 1995 by Robert Putnam entitled “Bowling Alone” stressed the importance of civic involvement in maintaining a healthy democracy and the strengthening of social ties. Century 21 Turner Brokers is on board. “We feel that as the community has been very good to us and our agents, we have always stressed to our office that it is important to continually give back to the community,” according to Michelle Turner. Turner says that in 2012, many of the firm’s agents have been involved in fundraisers for St. Susan’s, The Creche, Inc., and the Reg Lenna Civic Center. “Century 21 is a sponsor of the newly developed ‘Big City Summer Concert Series’ at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena,” Turner commented. The outdoor concerts are free to the public every Friday evening for ten weeks of summer, with a

different band performing each week. When asked to comment on the wide range of services they provide, Michelle Turner says, “We are always learning and keeping abreast of new fields and the needs of families relocating to this area.” These needs might revolve around interim housing, matching families to local school districts, spousal employment, and family interests like music lessons and churches. All of the company’s agents help local groups. Bill Rollinger, an associate broker with Century 21 Turner Brokers for the past 25 years, has volunteered for twelve years in the physical therapy department at WCA Hospital and has served for thirteen years as vice president of Chautauqua County Sports Hall of Fame. Sara Vail, who has been an associate broker for the past thirty years, is the co-president of the Lakewood Women’s Club, a ten-year member of The Creche, Inc, and has been involved with the WCA Hospital Women’s Auxiliary for over twenty years. Sharon Lisciandro is a full-time real estate agent with Century 21 Turner Brokers. Her membership and volunteer affiliations include Reg Lenna Civic Center, Lakewood Women’s Club, Aids Community Services, Lucy-

Desi Center, The Creche, Inc., Chautauqua County Board of Realtors, JCC Presidents Round Table, and St. Susan’s Center.
