It’s Coming...A Look Ahead at the Changes

to the Children’s Building

Page 2: CHBaptist Connection March 2011

Jesus has everything I need, you need, we need. He has never failed. The Bible says to put your

hope in Him, Him alone. Our hope is not to be in a job, or a person, or money, or a position or any other of the multitude of things and people we have a tendency to put our hope in. We put all our hope, all our faith, all our confidence in Jesus. We have everything riding on Him. I believe that. I can give that witness, and I pray you can also.

2010 is a year I would describe as tense. I think there are a variety of reasons for that, but jobs and the economy were big drivers. Of course, we are a nation at war also. And what was being felt at a national level was felt in homes and lives, and even in churches. As we have come into 2011, I am not sure how much of that has changed yet.

Where there is stress and tension we need to ask ourselves, “Where is our hope?” Stress and anxiety are indicators that we have tied ourselves to something that can’t hold. That is why we are stressed! When our hope is in God, there is peace (Philippians 4:4-7). Jesus talks about how to handle stress and anxiety, especially as it relates to our economy, whether it be national or home economy. Read Matthew 6:19-34.

There are a couple of things that stand out to me about Jesus’ principles – first to not handle this right makes us look like pagans. Wow! I don’t want to look like that.

So how does Jesus say to handle a hard economy?

1.Don’t focus on what you have here, but what you are sending on ahead to heaven.

2.Watch your heart. It tends to get tied to your money. Your heart is going to go where your money goes, and if your money is not going wisely and rightly, then your going to have heart health issues – like stress.

3.Watch out that you don’t get so focused on your financial situation that it becomes your god. We think about it, work on it, focus on it all the time – pretty soon it is our hope and everything we are geared to. That won’t work. I think we have proved that. Look around.

4.Don’t worry, but rather trust in the Lord.

Giving is a way to follow all of these principles. When I give to the church, ministries, and caring for the poor I am sending money on ahead to heaven. When I give to the Lord, that is where my heart is going to go. When I give to the Lord, my money is serving Him, and not me. Giving is a very tangible way to express our faith and trust in the Lord. When we give, what a way to say, “This is not my hope. The Lord is!” Jesus’ principle work, every time. Give them a try during this time of tension, during this time of feeling a real need to be careful with money.

As you consider giving, even giving sacrificially, I pray you see Colonial

Heights Baptist Church as a place you can joyfully do that, as a place you can trust how it is being managed and used, as a place where you send it on to heaven, as a place where those resources will be used to impact a community and world. We have been given much and much is expected, says the Lord. Let’s show Him we are not a people who are anxious, but a people filled with faith and so excited about what He is doing here, and we want to be more and more a part of it.

Recently, the Connection Newsmagazine had a chance to talk with staff member Angela Toney about her time here at CH Baptist and about the upcoming changes in the Children’s Ministry with the exciting new addition of the extension of the children’s building.

Connection Newsmagazine: You’ve been full-time with CH Baptist as the Children’s Ministry Associate for about a year now, tell us what this first year has been like for you.

Angela Toney: I have had a blast! I absolutely love what I do and look forward to being here. I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to impact the lives of children and families. Just in my first year, I have overseen the Nursery and Preschool Department, planning and preparation for Kids Worship, Movie Nights, T&T Lock In, Children’s Musical, Vacation Bible School, 5th Grade Graduation Ceremony, Summer Program, Summer Camp at Camp Willow Run, the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the addition, a record breaking year in attendance for our AwAnA program, took over BIG church with Kids Worship, and become a Project Team member for the new building. I am sure I left something out, but these are just a few aspects of the ministry I have been a privilege to be a part of.

CN: Construction has been going on in the children’s wing for almost as long as you’ve worked here. What has it been like to watch the changes going on in the building and anticipating the changes that will take place in the ministry once you are able to “move in”?

AT: I stand in awe of what God has done in this church. I never imagined that less than 3 years after moving onto this site we would already be building an addition as a result of the explosive growth within our Children’s Ministry. I am excited and a little overwhelmed at the same time. I know great things are going to happen for our children in this building, but I also know that it will take more volunteers and leaders to make it happen. My prayer is that hearts will be moved amongst our people to come be a part of sharing and showing God’s love to our children.

CN: Tell us a little bit about what parents can expect once the building is open. (The doors being moved being one of the more visible differences.) I hear that check-in/security will work a little differently.

AT: They can expect longer hallways. Goodness, I need a Segway® just to travel down them. All joking

aside, we will still be providing a secured environment for the children. The main check-in we use today will be transformed into a visitor check-in and the check-in for our members will be moved in the hallway located by our indoor playground. The separate Nursery and Preschool hallways will have secured doors that can only be entered with a security pass. I believe parents will find the same

loving environment as before, but with a smaller classroom setting which will allow our leaders and our children for more one on one interaction.

CN: Among the new classrooms added, there will also be an auditorium for the preschoolers that features a puppet theatre. Can you tell us about the creation of that ministry and what it is designed to do?

AT: We were made to worship our Lord. This is what we will teach the children in the Puppet Theatre which is called “Central Park”. We will have a time of Praise and Worship where we teach the children songs that celebrate God’s goodness then bring the Bible to life through animated puppetry and characters. CN: What is the one thing you want parents to know about the Children’s Ministry here at CH Baptist?

AT: We love your children and we partner with you on raising them to develop a close understanding of and relationship with our Heavenly Father.

CN: With all the changes coming about so near in the future, what is one thing you’d want a CH Baptist member to know?

AT: In Luke 12:48, part of the verse says, “To whom much is given, of him much will be required.” God has given us this building and He has given us ALL spiritual gifts and talents. My prayer is that in the end He will find us faithful with how we used and treated what He has given us. As God has given us this building, Buddy and I feel He is calling us to take the worship experience for the children to a higher level. I ask you to consider serving alongside us to help bring children to a closer understanding of the power and the goodness of our God.

You may have noticed the posters in the hall on your way to Kids Worship. Each one is a

different but they all have one thing in common - a virtue.

In Kids Worship we teach a different virtue every month. This virtue consists of God qualities and values. Our prayer is that these virtue will be instilled in their hearts and lives so they can become more like Jesus. In return, by being more like Him they can begin to impact the world for Christ.

We encourage parents to talk with their children about what they have learned in Kids Worship and in their Bible Fellowship classes. These posters not only showcase the “coming attractions” but give parents a jumping off point to begin a conversation with each child.

The Kids Worship Virtue for March is “Courage”. What does it mean for us to believe that courage is a reflection of God’s character working in us to change and impact the world around us?

Kids Worship is a service tailor-made to suit children in grades K-5 and uses curriculum from 252 Basics which is based on Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

Some of us think about money when we think about investing.

In financial areas, when you invest in something you do it for a return. What return are you looking for when you invest in the lives of others? Are you looking for a thank you, a pat on the back or maybe something bigger than you? Maybe you are investing for the same reason God invests in us! He invest in us because He loves us. God invests in us every single day. He could have taken us out of this world last night or anytime but he chooses to invest in us every day.

What about you? Being a volunteer is more than just doing. It is

about seeing what God is doing and coming along side Him.

What is His return? It is just not about serving, or even feeling

obligated to give back for what God has done for you. It is about using what God has given you for His glory. It is about catching a vision of a specific ministry. I see different people throughout the church that have caught on to the vision of a specific ministry and are investing in that area. They are not just serving, they are not just giving their time and talents one Sunday a month but they are infused in that ministry.

Debbie Heuermann is Director of Volunteer

Ministries.

Next time you see Joyce, Jimmy, or the other children’s volunteers, remember to thank them.

I write this article in response to those who have the mistaken opinion that Outreach is and of itself hard to

do, that it’s difficult. It’s not something we’re comfortable doing. It’s not our gift, we don’t know what to say. We’re reluctant to talk about spiritual things or to invite people to worship with us and to witness would be a scary thing to try. Is this you? Is this where you are in your spiritual walk? I can understand, that describes most of us at one time in our life. But it is time to move past this lie of the Devil. We can invite, we can speak of spiritual things with confidence and, yes, we can witness if we are willing to try and to learn. At Colonial Heights Baptist, these things are made simple for those willing to participate in two of our programs, Go Fish and FAITH Evangelism. As we read this, Faith will be in mid-session but will start again in September. Go Fish is scheduled for the third Saturday of most months. Watch the bulletin for dates. Outreach is very simply reaching out to those all around us, talking, inviting, witnessing, letting them know God loves them, we love them.

Allow me to ask, do you think Outreach is hard for you? Won’t you consider joining the hundreds here at CH Baptist that are already taking part in Outreach? Help answer our God’s call to “Go and make disciples”.

For details or information or if you would just like to talk to someone about Outreach, please contact Jim Reeves at 804.526.0424 or [email protected].

Jim Reeves is the Outreach Pastor at Colonial Heights Baptist. He and his

wife, Judy, have two grown sons and one grandson.

OUTREACH?. . . Not me!

Colonial Heights Baptist partners with several ministries in our area to help us to impact our community for Christ. One partner that we have had for several years is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

The FCA Vision: To see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches.

The FCA Mission: To present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church.

The FCA Values: Our relationships will demonstrate steadfast commitment to Jesus Christ and His Word through Integrity, Serving, Teamwork and Excellence.

About the FCAThe Fellowship of Christian Athletes is touching millions of lives . . . one heart at a time. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

One of our church members, Lennie Nugent is the Area Representative for the local region. He represents schools in the area by working with coaches, athletic directors and student athletes by helping them organize huddle groups, assemblies in the high schools and rallies in local churches. The FCA provides an avenue to get Christ into our schools and a vehicle for student athletes to share their faith with teammates.

Interested in learning more about getting involved with FCA? Contact Wes Rose at the church office or at [email protected] or Lennie Nugent at [email protected].

Appomattox Basin is the local region of FCA and ranges from Chippenham Parkway to the North Carolina line with an office in Colonial Heights. We have one full-time staff member, a Leadership Board of Directors, an adult support group and almost 100 volunteers. Each year the FCA here makes in excess of 40,000 “touches” for Christ. This is done through Huddles (clubs) in schools, FCA Chaplains working with athletic teams, summer camps and many local events and programs.
