On The Park

Welcome back to Park Road Stadium for today’s fixture against

Holker Old Boys. We offer a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters who have made the long journey from Cumbria to SK8 this afternoon.

We enter today’s game on the back of two consecutive victories which have been a great morale boost for everyone here at the Football Club. It’s certainly nice to have a fully fit and suspension free squad and I’m sure it is a massive boost to Terry and the rest of the Management Team. Similar to last week’s fixture against Daisy Hill, we face a tough opposition in Holker Old Boys who have put a good run of results lately to help them rise up the table. But if we can put the same effort in as was witnessed last weekend, then I’m sure we’ll be in for a good game this afternoon. We enter a crucial period over the next weeks and months of the season and we look to gain as many points as possible to give us a realistic chance to get into one of the Play-Off positions and look to get back to the Premier Division, for which we have been absent from for far too long now. Aside from the First Team, the Reserve Team are also hitting a bit of form which is

deserved following all the hard work that Gary Billingham and the rest of his team put in. It’s never an easy job to run a Reserve side when you have to field a changed side most weeks as players are promoted to the First Team. But the Reserve side are still in with a good chance of progressing to the Quarter Final stages of the Cheshire League Cup competition and can still elevate themselves up to a respectable position in the League. We’re back at home again next Saturday when Oldham Boro are the visitors.

Enjoy the game.

Alan Farnworth - A Tribute

On the day that we celebrate the life of former League Vice-Chairman Alan

Farnworth while mourning his passing, we publish the following tribute to him.

It has been written by Frank Anderson, a committee member at Atherton Collieries, and a long standing friend of Alan’s.

The article was first published in the match programme for the Atherton Collieries v Hanley Town game which was played last Saturday.

The front cover of Saturday’s programme is pictured right, and features a picture that Alan gave to Colls Secretary Emil Anderson a couple of years ago.

It shows Alan in 1992 when he was Colls’ Secretary, alongside members of the Colls’ team when they played Newcastle Town in the 1992 Second Division Trophy final at Ashton United’s Hurst Cross stadium.

Former League Vice-Chairman John Cowley was the referee for the game, which Newcastle won 2-0.

As you can see that Alan looks to be a proud Secretary of the club that was always close to his heart. Alan Farnworth - A Tribute t was an extremely sad day last Monday when news came that ex-Atherton Collieries Secretary and North West Counties Football League official Alan Farnworth had passed away.

Having said that, it was no real surprise to his friends as severe health problems over a number of years had gradually reduced his quality of life. In spite of that, his courage shone through every time I visited him in hospital. He was still as feisty as ever, and didn’t suffer fools gladly.

Born and bred in Farnworth, birthplace of ex-England star Alan Ball, he was very proud of his roots, playing football himself and was a big supporter of Bolton Wanderers.

Prior to joining the Colls, Alan was involved at NWCFL outfit Bolton St Thomas’s who unfortunately folded when their ground was seized to build houses on. Colls committee man Steve Payne knew Alan, and they met up at a Bolton Hospital Cup game, Colls against Ramsbottom United.

Christine Howell was Colls Secretary but she was having difficulty with work commitments and Alan took over the role. It didn’t take him long to integrate into the club and his

NWCFL News

08 The Official Match Programme of Cheadle Town

commitment and diligence to the job made him a real asset.

It was a blow when he left the club in 1993 to move onto the NWCFL committee exclusively, and he immediately settled to his new tasks. He was just as committed to the league as he had been at Colls and he settled into the position of Ground Grader extraordinaire.

Rumour has it that he was once contacted by the Northern League to sort out their grading issues, but travel would have been a problem. Somebody once said to me that Colls had favouritism concerning our grading, but that was further from the truth than you can imagine. He was stricter with us because he didn’t want to tarnish his reputation.

Just last week I visited him in hospital, and he said there was a possibility that we might get promoted this season. He then started to go on about jobs that needed doing in preparation. Once a ground grader always a ground grader!

His partnership with his great friend Dave (Tommo) Tomlinson as Chairman and Vice Chairman was a major factor in the NWCFL becoming an elite league nationally.

Alan’s health problems eventually meant that he couldn’t attend league meetings as much as he would have liked, and a couple of years ago he left the Vice Chairman and head of discipline roles. However Dave still rang him every day to discuss League business, and rightly so.

Alan certainly let you know when he wasn’t happy with you. A few weeks ago, we played Cammell Laird at home and there were a number of league officials present. As the final

whistle sounded, I went on the pitch to sort some divots out. I never thought of phoning him, thinking that one of the committee would do the job.

Hours later he phoned me, saying that he didn’t know any scores. I apologised explaining my motives, but he would have none of it. He would never have blamed a league committee man.

His commitment to non league soccer was highlighted last Saturday. At 9am I got a text off him saying that at 2.46am he had had a heart attack. He was being moved to the coronary care unit and he would try to phone me later, but he was very poorly. I texted him back wishing a quick recovery.

In the afternoon we played away at Widnes with a 2pm kick off. Five minutes after the game had finished, he texted me wanting to know the score. What a man in the middle of such trauma – he was brave as a lion. He was also proud of the way the club were performing this season.

On behalf of everybody involved in the club, I would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his daughter Bev and family, with the knowledge that he was held in such high regard at Alder House and the non league world.

In recent years when Alan wasn’t in hospital, he watched the majority of his football at Alder House. He parked his car at the side of Emma’s teabar and held court. That part of the ground will forever be known as Farny’s Corner.

FRANK ANDERSON

The Official Match Programme of Cheadle Town 09

Holker Old Boys’ AFC was founded in 1936 as an under 16 side from Old Boys’ of

the then Holker Central Secondary School in Holker Street Barrow-in-Furness. The school itself has long since been replaced with a Kwik Save supermarket which has also closed its doors in recent years.

In season 1939-40 the club joined the local North Western Open Age League, playing all their games on local playing fields. Junior teams were soon formed thus keeping the links with their roots.

1967 saw the club enter a team in the West Lancashire League whilst retaining a side in the NWL.

In 1971 a site for a new ground was obtained at Rakesmoor Lane on land which had originally been an isolation hospital then allotments. The club moved from their previous home on Thorncliffe Road to their present one at Rakesmoor. On the formation of the Furness Premier League in 1980 the club entered two teams into this league and still retains two sides, the Reserves and ‘A’ Team, in the League to date.

Having spent years in the shadow of local rivals Vicker’s Sports Club (now Hawcoat Park) and Dalton United in season 1985/86 they had their best ever season to date finishing Runners-up to BAC Preston in the West Lancs League Div 1. However in the following season, which was also the Club’s Golden Jubilee season, they went one better and finished

Champions ahead of Vicker’s SC. More success followed as the club won the Adidas Lancashire Junior Shield in 1988/89 beating Walkden Town 2-0 and again in 1990/91 when they defeated Park United 1-0. The club were now thinking of progressing to a higher standard of football but much work was needed on their Rakesmoor Lane ground to bring it up to the standard required. Committee members, players, friends and their families all worked hard to extend the clubhouse, build new changing rooms and enclose the pitch. The reward for all this hard work was to be accepted into the NWCFL Second Division for the start of the 1991/92 season.

Holker Old Boys took a couple of seasons to acclimatise to the new higher standard during which time floodlights were installed and in 1993/94 they finished third in the Second Division behind Haslingden (now defunct) and North Trafford (now Trafford). Haslingden were unable to be promoted because their facilities did not meet the requirements for the First Division so Holker Old Boys filled the second promotion place. Holker gave a good account of themselves for their first three seasons in the First Division and in 1995/96 they finished in their highest ever position of 11th. However the 1997/98 season saw them struggle finishing just two points ahead of relegated Darwen and the 1998/99 season was a disaster seeing them lose all twenty away games and scoring just five goals on their travels. Not surprisingly Holker finished bottom of the Division and were relegated for the first time in their history. After relegation the club

restructured its finances and undertook a period of rebuilding.

In season 2002/03 the Club had its best season since 1995/96 finishing fifth in Division 2. In season 2003/04 off the field the club secured over £80,000 in grants for stadium improvements, pitch drainage and car parking. Playing wise seasons 2003/04 to 2007/08 were a disappointment with the side languishing in the lower half of the Division however there were one or two moments to savour namely reaching the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in season 2004/05 and the successful arrangement of the game against FC United of Manchester in 2005/06 at Craven Park, the home of Barrow Raiders RLFC, in front of a club record attendance of 2303. Both these events raised much welcome finance for the club enabling them to embark on more ground improvements starting with the upgrading of the floodlights for season 2006/07. The club was also rewarded for its efforts at junior level with the commitment and effort of coaches, managers and the Committee helping to attain the FA Charter Standard Development Club Award for the junior section.

Season 2006/07 brought success for the U18 side, which was a blend of many of the previous season’s U16 and U18 sides, when they lifted the LFA Furness Building Society Youth Cup. Because of the loss of several older players, at the end of season 2005/06, to lower levels of the pyramid many of the previous season’s U18 side also played in the First Team in season 2006/07 which may account for their success in the Youth Cup having gained from the experience of playing Open Age football. The success of the Junior Section in producing

quality players began to show in the First Team as was the case in season 2008/09 when they finished ninth in the renamed Vodkat League First Division our highest League placing since season 2002/03.

Having achieved steady progress under the management of Dave Smith and his assistant Maurice Watkin over a season and a half to finish 3rd in the 1st Division in season 2010/11 Dave had to step down because of a job offer in the States at the end of that season and hand the reigns over to new manager Jon Balm for season 2011/12. However things didn’t go well for Jon and a run of poor results ended with him resigning in mid November 2011. Dave Smith’s job in the states didn’t prove to be as good as promised and he and Maurice Watkin stepped back into the fray to steady the ship and finished the season in mid table. Season 2012/13 was a disaster from a League point of view with the Club just managing to avoid the wooden spoon right at the end of the season. The FA Cup provided the only solace with progress to the 1st Qualifying Round netting the Club nearly £3000 in prize money. The 2013/14 season saw new faces in charge with Dave Smith and Maurice Watkin moving on to the Committee and Gary Fawcett and Stuart Roberts taking charge to propel the side to a respectable 6th place and the semi final of the NWCFL 1st Division Challenge Cup with the fresh signings brought in to bolster the nucleus of the squad that they retained. The Reserves benefited from a bigger 1st team pool by winning the Furness Premier League Premier Division and The Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy under the stewardship of Andy Forbes as the strength in depth proved its worth. Hopes are high of further progress on and off the field in 2014/15.

16 The Official Match Programme of Cheadle Town

Cheadle Town produced an accomplished performance to beat a

tough and well organised Daisy Hill side at Park Road Stadium.

With wintery showers predicted for most of the North West, SK8 seemed to miss out on the worse of the weather as this fixture was given the green light early in the day.

Manager, Terry Hincks had the luxury of a fully fit and suspension free squad to pick from in what was the first of a trio of consecutive fixtures at Park Road Stadium during the month of January.

It was Cheadle who forced the early chances in the game as Callum Jones saw a long range effort go wide, which soon was followed by Nathan Neequaye’s great effort as he rounded the keeper only to see his shot hit the side netting.

Nathan Neequaye had a further chance on 18 minutes when his well placed header hit the crossbar only rebound into the keepers hands.

Daisy Hill had their first chance on 18 minutes to take the lead, but for the heroics of Stephen Piggott who made a fantastic double save to keep the scoreline level.

As the first half continued, Cheadle were presented with a further chance to break

the deadlock when Ashley Smallwood saw a long range effort cannon of the crossbar.HT: Cheadle Town 0-0 Daisy Hill

It wasn’t long into the second half when Cheadle finally go their deserved goal when on 49 minutes Luke Pearson picked up a loose ball outside the box and fired a low shot passed the diving keeper.

Cheadle did have an opportunity to increase their lead on 63 minutes as James Moore’s diving header from a Thabiso Magida cross when just wide of the goal.

As the pitch started to cut up, so did the play and chances then became limited between both sides as Cheadle looked to keep the lead and defended solidly against a bullish Daisy Hill attack.

Daisy Hill were dealt a blow in injury time as their captain was shown a straight red card for a professional foul as he hauled down Nathan Neequaye who was through on goal.

An great performance by Cheadle Town against a tough opposition which will help boost the morale ahead today’s fixture.

Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester &

District Sunday Football League in their Under-16s Division.

As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later.

In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire F.A. Cups.

Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian

player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendary foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come.
