COVER MODELWe’ve featured many of our staff and departments on the cover of our Check It Out newsletters. However, this is our first look at the behind-the-scenes Technol-ogy Department. Traci Higgins is the Technology Manager for DCDL and celebrates her four-year an-niversary with us this fall! She loves training to trouble-shooting and everything in between, and is especially fond of her coworkers who make work fun and in-teresting every day. Traci and her husband are big Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field fans and their kids’ names, Ryne (11) and Addisyn (5), reflect it!

DELAWAREADSThis fall, the Delaware community will once again come together with one goal; to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic prelude to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit. DelawaREADS 2014 will bring new life to the 1937 classic. Community partners like the Dela-ware Community Center YMCA and Delaware City Schools will provide fun activities and discussions, and the Delaware County District Library will be sponsor-ing the Main Street Delaware First Friday on No-vember 7. Be sure to finish the book by December 17 when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theatres!

LAPTOPS & TABLETSWe are excited to be increasing internet access op-portunities at all four of our branches by lending out laptops as well as tablets to patrons for in-library use. This new program will allow library cardholders who have accounts in good standing to borrow a tablet or laptop on a first-come, first-served basis for up to two hours each day. After each session has expired, all files and history are deleted from the laptop or tablets to protect your privacy. Quick, convenient, and just one more way we are helping you connect!

NEW

STORYTIME!

BACK TO SCHOOLTo help get back in the groove of homework and reading assignments, DCDL is offering Homework Help Centers and Reading Buddies after school pro-grams. Reading Buddies is being offered by the Powell Branch Library once a month to students in kin-dergarten through third grade. Students bring a book or pick one from the shelves and practice reading aloud one-on-one with a trained Library volunteer. Homework Help Centers are available for students in grades K-8. See the feature on the back cover for information regarding locations, dates and times.

ORANGE GARDENSMore than four dozen Delaware County District Library patrons and community members, along with art-ists Lynda Elias and Virginia Corwin, helped create and complete the newest piece of mythical-inspired art, a giant dragon, for the Imagination Garden at the Orange Branch Library. The colorful arrangement of mosaic tiles and mirrored pieces glued to several large zig-zagging panels help simulate the movement of a colossal, whimsical, winged creature flying through the garden. The work of tiling all of the pieces to the panels and grouting took about one week to finish in early July. An open house is scheduled for the public to come meet all the artists and see the gardens on Sunday, September 21 from 2 - 4 PM. Attendees will enjoy music, light refreshments, and a children’s craft in a beautiful setting on a Sunday afternoon.
